Screenshot Captor / Re: is there a way to add watermarks to each captured image?
« Last post by mouser on January 14, 2006, 01:15 PM »
it might be useful to remind people that the "Tools" menu of screenshot captor was designed to make it possible for people to very easily configure external tools (like watermarking tools) that can be easily run on screenshots.

i still think watermarking is a good thing to add as a built in tool, but i need to hear more about what options should be available.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Screenshot Captor 2.08.01 - EARLY BETA with scrolling cap
« Last post by mouser on January 14, 2006, 12:58 PM »
just a note; on a test i just ran capturing this page, horizontal and vertical scroll needed,
screenshot captor took 13 seconds, snagit 21 seconds.

a test which involved no horizontal scrolling had this reversed.
with screenshot captor taking 20 seconds and seeming to get stuck temporarily at bottom, and snagit taking only 12.
another test had sc doing it in 11 seconds.  i think the first time an animation on the page confused it - i might be able to tweak that so it's not fooled by such stuff.

but I tried a capture of this webpage and it took over 15 seconds to complete and scrolled the window about 4 times plus a lot of intermittent flashing where the page didn't seem to move ???

good point - i may be overly cautious about leaving enough time for things to take effect.  after we get more experience with this new feature perhaps i can speed it up or offer some options.

Screenshot Captor / Screenshot Captor Tip of the Day: Quick File Rename
« Last post by mouser on January 14, 2006, 08:34 AM »
Here's a tip i'm not sure everyone knows about that can make life easier.

You can quickly rename the current file by simply typing in a new name in the "Name" field below the image; just type in a new name and then hit enter.

try changing this option to "Never" and see if that's what you want:

option to have captionbar inside the box is a very good one, i will make that an option.

xdesk interference - that sounds like you've identified the problem; maybe i can contact author and see if anything can be done.  no way to disable the xdesk previewer temporarily i suppose?

Is the algorithm of how the window scrolled in the library package or do you actually initiate the scrolling. It just doesn't seem to be very efficient.
this is all done by my code but it's quite necesary.  there is no simple way to capture scrolling windows - what has to be done is one has to mark up the image and then send scrolling commands and then look for your marks in the new window, to see where you marks has moved.  snagit uses a much more subtle marker - you can probably notice some dots on your window if you look closely while snagit scrolls.  i may try to use more subtle marks in the future after we know everything else is working right.  maybe i should call it epileptic capture mode until then?

not yet but it sounds like a feature that should be in the program - if you have any suggestions for the kinds of options that should be presented for a watermarker i'd be happy to hear them.

maybe options like adding the watermark as an object or permanent; size options; maybe even a watermark menu where you can configure common watermark images that could be selected when desired (rather than added at time of capture).

a very good idea - i think i can do this.
if you wouldn't mind adding it to bugtracker (see button above) it would help me remember to implement it.

it's not a bug, but try unchecking this setting and see if it is what you are wanting:

Screenshot Captor / Re: Ewido finds malware in KeyHook.dll ??
« Last post by mouser on January 14, 2006, 12:00 AM »
these scanning programs really have to be much more up front about when they are guessing.  i've already comlained to eset about nod32 which is an anotherwise great antivirus.  but it has this very iffy heuristic mode and when it detects something it just blithely reports it as a virus, when chances are it isnt.  it's good to report stuff that the program thinks is suspicious so the user can investigate but these programs absolutely need to make clear when it is a guess, and help the user figure out what is real and what isnt.

another hint on how to distinguish between real malware and false alarm:
naming a dll "keyhook.dll" is not a very good disguise for a keylogger :)

Screenshot Captor / Re: Ewido finds malware in KeyHook.dll ??
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2006, 11:57 PM »
ugh.. im really getting tired of these overagressive scanners that are flagging more and more software and malware, etc.
keyhook.dll is a simple dll that is used by screenshot captor in the new redbox capture mode, so that it can detect when you hit escape or hold down the control key while in any app.  it's absolutely 100% not malware or "logger.mulin.a" or whatever it reports.  its probably triggering on the fact that the dll is doing low level keyboard access in the same way that a keylogger would.  if other scanners other than "ewido" get upset over this i may go through the painful effort of trying to recompile and change the code enough so that the scanner stops it's whining.  it is a false positive.  note all the dll is loaded into memory by screenshot captor ONLY while redbox capture is actually in use and that screenshot captor has no abilities whatsover to connect to the internet, and installs and modifies no system files.

Screenshot Captor / Post your Programs where Scrolling Window Capture Fails
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2006, 07:51 PM »
If you have programs where screenshot captor fails to successfully capture in autoscroll mode, post them here, maybe we can help add support for them.

autoscroll capture can be tricky sometimes so there are a number of exceptions that can be set in the options. an exception is of the form:
WindowClassName;leftmargin;topmargin;rightmargin;bottommargin;extras

you can tell the WindowClassName because its shown in parentheses when you use redbox capture and select a window.
the margins can be used to exclude scrollbars.

the extras supported so far (we will probably need to add more) are:
blankstop
sendkeys

[blankstop needs to be used on programs which overwrite our special marker because they do a custom draw in a weird way.  ultraedit text editor window needs this.  if during capture your window seems to keep trying to scrolling forever and never figures out when it hits the end, try this.

sendkeys is used for windows where the normal pageup and pagedown messages aren't handled.  mozilla is an example of a program which needs this (but the exception is employed automatically in this case so you don't have to code an exception for this).]

and by all means if you figure out an exception setting for an app, post it for us to add.

Best E-mail Client / Re: How I set up my mail folders
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2006, 07:17 PM »
...then have a filter automatically be applied once I'm done reviewing all of my new mail so that the emails get properly filed away?

that's an interesting idea.  i dont think you can strictly do this in thebat, because there's no real notion of "closing a mailbox" which would trigger the filter.

however, i think you could do what you are saying by making a virtual folder and having it display all UNREAD mail.
now all new mail would get filtered right away to the different folders, but your virtual folder would always contain all unread mail from all accounts.  i think you can do that.

some of the shareware payment services have the ability to automatically send files after a purchase, which sounds like what you want.  there are some paypal scripts as well that would do this.  we use a (php) paypal script here that could be modified to do what you want as well. it does use a database though to keep track of payments (as do most paypal scripts).

when you say its overkill to install php+mysql - most server accounts have php and mysql enabled anyway so it's not a matter of installing it, just a matter of configuring and using it..

so when it happens - it only happens to screenshot captor - you can still access menus and stuff in other programs?  that doesnt seem like it could be caused by my mouse blocking code, which would block all such clicking..
33498
Screenshot Captor / Re: Strange..
« Last post by mouser on January 13, 2006, 02:21 PM »
the new screenshot captor "redbox" object selection mode does use a mouseblocking hook to  prevent mouse clicks from triggering windows keypresses and clicks to enable capturing of menus.. i guess it's possible that somewhere in that process the block is being left in place.

when this happens does it only effect clicking menus and buttons from within screenshot captor?

what i can do is make an option in screenshot captor to never use this mouseclick+key blocking (so you would use right ctrl slick to capture menus, and we can see if that solves it.  you might also try rebooting just to see if its some holdover from earlier versions of the screenshot captor keyboard+mouse hook dll.

note that these keyboard+mousehook blocking i talk of are only loaded at runtime with screenshot captor, and have no other lasting effecting on your system - so if the problem happens even when not using screenshot captor, then its definitely not screenshot captor to blame.
