Living Room / Comcast injecting code into webpages?

There's no context to this.  But I figured it was pretty interesting, in any case, and looks plausible:

Or to put it more professionally: A "bad option" remains a bad option, regardless of the degree of risk involved in pursuing it.

I'd disagree that it, in and of itself, is a bad option.  It becomes bad, IMO, when too much dependency is introduced into one outside source.  Making art on Spec is very fraught with the unknowns.  To know beforehand that you have a ready market for your work can be very calming, I'd think.  So modifying what has gone before to remove the one source problem does make the problem and solution as different.  Many people funding (a crowd, even) makes it the rule of the mob- for good and for bad.

Which was, I think, was an extremely significant factor in getting her the backing she got - along with her roughly 14 years of "street cred" and active involvement with her fan base leading up to it.

I do agree with this point- having a product made vs. soliciting to make it is a large differentiation.  And one that I use in my own support of Kickstarters that I support (less so with Patreon, as it's usually ongoing).

So I don't see a return to patronage as necessarily  desireable or without danger to artistic integrity.

I do agree there are dangers- but there's danger in everything.  The trick is to be aware of them, and work to avoid them.  You really think that the current system we have is any better?  And that those same pressures don't exist?  The current system is closer to classical patronage- the few hold the money, and they support who they will on a whim.  When I say patronage, I don't think towards that system- but more towards those that want support directly.  That is what I like about patronage.  I give $1 and it's not much.  10000 give $1 and it's a clear sign that you're doing something that people like.  100,000 give $1... and you're well on your way.  So I mean everyone being a patron of what they like.  Rather than the artist getting only a fraction of what I pay, and being in control of a lesser fraction.  And where you have to basically sign away your work in order to get published.

I had a friend... a moderately successful writer.  He wrote a pretty niche set of novels, and still writes them.  It was originally his story... and one that the publisher just publishes, right?  He tried to go into different media.  Things that the publisher wasn't even into.  Used Kickstarter for it, and was very successful.  Too successful one might say- there was nothing from the publisher's side, until the Kickstarter did so well.  You can imagine the rest.  It ended *reasonably* well, but still, it shows that people above will grasp onto anything they can keep ahold of, and squeeze until there's nothing left.

I also think she was the right person, with the right project, in the right place, at the right time - and the crowdsourcing scene was in a unique moment where it wanted to put some real momentum behind something. So I think it was more a phenomenon rather than a sign that pointed the way for others.

There are a lot of successful music and art campaigns on Kickstarter and Patreon.  And I think it's awesome.  It hails back to the 18th century when patronage was a thing.  Pentatonix is a group that has benefited from it.  And Lindsey Sterling.  But that is a supplement that allows them to do their thing in all three cases, rather than a support.  And I think that's an important distinction.  Without the other side - engaging with your fans in a real way, producing, and performing, you'll never rise to the level of real sustenance.  More... subsistence, I think is the word I'm looking for.

I wouldn't consider her a Cinderella in this piece.  She performs a lot.

My intention was to use it to whitelist processes allowed to interact with my most important data. That's variously stored in D:\Project, P:\ for my photos, etc. But as far as I can see in WinAntiRansom, you can only designate one part of the filesystem (a non-root, non-virtual directory) below which everything is protected. That means I can only use it to protect *one* such area, not all of them. And that makes it almost useless.

It's gone down about $10 since I started looking for ways to buy BTC locally (about an hour).

Hell its dropped almost $70 total today. If highend can wait till Saturday he might just get it for a song by then. I can't afford to move any of mine right now, I'm to far under water.

This is my hesitation in getting in...  I just want some for purchases, not for investment.  But it's *still* scary!

Just an update to my CoinJar experiment:

ID verification was completed within 3 hours of uploading relevant info, this now lets me transfer up to AU$2500/day into the CoinJar account.
One bank account linked and verified within 6 hours, two remaining bank accounts linked and verified within 48 hours.

Linking a bank account isn't necessary since you can still deposit to your CoinJar account by using BPAYw, (up to 24 hours to process), or POLiw, (up to 48 hours to process).

If nothing else these guys are ridiculously efficient.

Asher and the guys at Coinjar have worked ridiculously hard against incredible resistance to get things working. I've talked to him about some of those problems on a number of occasions.

What's funny is that both Asher and I have the same problems in using Coinjar due to neither of us being Australian. There are extra hurdles there. He's a good sport about it though.

Can you use CoinJar if you're not from AU?  Looks interesting...

I have mine also- but I've not been able to do anything with it.  The power switch broke off first thing- and I'm not the only one.  They said I can turn it on with a needle, but I haven't gotten around to trying.

The pricing for WinAntiRansom on the website is all mixed up. The web page describing the product says $14.95. If you click on the buy with PayPal link, it tells you $29.95, and if you click on the credit card link, it tells you $19.95.

You're using an old link.  https://www.winpatrol.com/WinAntiRansom/

That other link is expired, though he should have removed it as people would still have the link.  That one above is consistent in pricing at $29.95.

I've never had any problem with something being done about people who take advantage by delving into Terms and Conditions and driving through a loophole. And that goes for customers as well as providers.

I usually agree with you.  The only time that I don't agree with that sentiment is when the chosen line in the sand is not based on at least high-average use (xfinity, I'm looking at you)

I really want to get into BC... but I don't even know where to start with it doing this mess.

I read somewhere recently-ish that it was practically impossible (for the average person) to earn more money through mining than the cost of the power expended to run the mining hardware. But that may have been before the even-more-recent-ish rally that BTC has had.

I, too, am interested in getting into BTC, but I have no idea how to create a wallet. And I lack basic knowledge about BTC, such as if it's even possible to have a wallet without mining.

Yes, you can have a wallet without mining.  And you can get into BTC from the exchanges or from other people.  My problem is more not knowing where to jump in.

They can see what's in your drive?  Yes, many of these 'services' can.  Especially for de-duping.  The big row over that happened a while ago.
And it's something that should be complained about again and again and...

I just assume, even if they tell me they aren't.  And then encrypt what I need to (thanks for fsekrit while we're on that), and don't what I don't care about.

So advertising a service as "unlimited" is OK; but trying to see if it really is unlimited is not?

They are changing their policy - it was unlimited, now it won't be and they won't advertise it as such (at least that how I read things).

This change is obviously irritating and inconvenient for people who were taking advantage of large amounts of space, but I don't see anything deceptive about it. In fact they're being quite upfront about it. They offered unlimited storage, found they couldn't sustain it and have changed their policy as  result.

This.

The thing that worries me most about this change of policy isn't really the change of policy, but the emphasis in the quote:
Since we started to roll out unlimited cloud storage to Office 365 consumer subscribers, a small number of users backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings. In some instances, this exceeded 75 TB per user or 14,000 times the average.
-Microsoft

Care to guess why I find that part troubling?

I really want to get into BC... but I don't even know where to start with it doing this mess.

I honestly don't think there is a per se 'Right Way' to get started ... There are however a lot of wrong ways (like investing you life savings, etc..).

I went the mining route, because the whole investing/currency exchange thing confuses the shit out of me. But if you're good at that type of thing maybe pushing some shitcoin around might be a good way in.

In retrospect, I put more into the mining equipment than I should have and the money is kinda stuck there now ... But at the time - it looked good - I couldn't see the bottom falling out shortly thereafter. I'm not looking to pull out completely, I'd just like to break even.

Are you still running your mining setup?  And is it still generating an appreciable amount?

She actually did some pretty good stuff for a while in the music industry... and on the Mortal Kombat soundtrack.

I thought she performed better in films of the campy SciFi type such as Not Of This Earth than those she is known for.

Depends on the type of performance you were looking for, I'd suppose.

might just need a restart of SC then.

I'd actually rebooted in the interim, so just restarting SC isn't apparently enough.  But it does change back somehow other than just setting the shortcuts.  When I left this morning, it was messed up.  After coming home, it's working again, and I haven't touched that particular PC.  Very strange.  But very unwelcome and unsettling.

Recently, Windows updated.  I'm not sure if it's in the basic windows settings, or in onedrive.  I think the latter.  But now it has usurped SHIFT+PRTSCN, which I used for SSC to capture an area.  Does anyone know where you can change this?
