Looks crisp and clean - business like. My only complaint is that the menu bar is too wide, requiring one to scroll horizontally. Of course, I'm on an aging notebook with a letterbox monitor, which is likely the source of the problem.

I agree with CodeTrucker, actually. I don't have a problem with the name of any of Mouser's applciations. Clipboard Help and Spell is descriptive and rolls off the tongue easlily enough. What more can we ask?

I was disappointed by the ESET Security Suite demo (it contains NOD32 as the AV component). It started out GREAT but after a reboot it was terribly slow, a resource hog. I left it for a week but it never got any better (I thought it might need to "learn" my usage patterns or something). Anyway, switched to demo of Bitdefender AV and did the same. I was able to tweak it to be quite inobtrusive and bought a licence - it's made a dramatic improvement to my wife's notebook. It's also relegated Webroot AV and AS to an afterthought on my machine (and completely uninstalled from my wife's) despite my dual licence for it expiring in Novmber 2009. Bitdefender is simply that much less resource hungry. I do use Webroot for a weekly manual scan, though...

Apologies for the OT digression...

Hi Jim - re: TC UP. Bitdefender goes crazy over a number of files contained in my TC UP installation. I ran a trial of ESET Security Suite earlier this month before going with BitDefender and it didn't like elements of the TC UP install, either. Both of them complained about files in the "Programs" folder of TC UP. Revelation was one, I don't remember the others. I just let my AV disinfect/delete the files and removed the offending programmes as I use none of them anyway. The next time I install TC UP, I am going to do it clean and be very selective about the additional programmes it installs - I like the GUI improvements and the additional menus but am not really fussed about a lot of the additional 3rd party software (though note: it is nice to have the entire package installed to a thumbdrive).

Jim - given the description you've provided of the USB enclosure and how it deals with power supply, I'd swap enclosures. Your description sounds eerily reminiscent of the enclosure I have my SATA drive in... I think I may take my own advice on this one because the SATA drive, as things stand, is pretty much useless to me.

Well, it appears that the load time for the context menu in both TC (vanilla) and TC UP is depends on the type of file that you are selecting. In both TC and TC UP load times are pretty much instant for files, but take a bit longer ~5 seconds for folders. That 30 second wait that I experienced intitially was for a folder and another process (DoubleKiller Pro) was tagging my anaemic single core CPU.

I-N-T-E-R-E-S-T-I-N-G (is this the most overused word in the English language? No? I'd like to nominate it, along with genius, and hero as the three most overused words). I've enabled the context menu in TC and (drumroll) it takes at least 30 seconds to appear!

J-Mac, given the above discussion, I'd be very interested in hearing how long the context menu takes to appear in you TC installation? FWIW, I tried this in my TC "only" installation, and not in the TC UP installation, though in the interest of being thorough, I'm off to give that a whirl as well. I am not optimistic.

is it possible to have something in DOpus context but not in windows context menu - and that *it* could be causing the problem?

Thanks for the suggestion, Tom. AFAICT, though, there's nothing in my "DOpus only" context menu that isn't in the combined context menu. I'm so used to having to scroll through my context menu now that it doesn't bother me, but I should take a look into WHY this is happening, because it does fly in the face of other users' experiences and intuition!

Doh! It's a propros... I knew that! Really! I did...  n't  :(

This reminds me of the time, at about 26, that someone pointed out to me that it's "thank you" and not "thankyou"...

Interesting point about pdf files, mouser (though this comment is two years late!). I was trying to think of a frequent use for this type of application and couldn't, but I *do* download pdfs all the time and frequently discover that I've multiple copies of the same file in different locations with different names... Hmm... this could wind up costing me money!

Another option to replace the Shutdown functionality of Xecutor is Handy Labs Shutdown Folder. I used to have this installed but found that I never actually used it so it's been gone for a long time, but it did work as advertised when I tested it.

There's a free "lite" version as well: http://www.hs-lab.co...products/df/lite.php

I have the context menu problem in DOpus 9 as well but completely the reverse of J-Mac's problem (which is odd). If I disable Windows Explorer entries from displaying in the DOpus context menu it takes up to 15 seconds for the Context Menu to appear. If I leave the default settings in place and have both appear, the context menu appears instanteously.

There IS a way to invoke the context menu in TC, Jim, and people keep posting to tell me how to do it... I keep forgetting, though  :-[ Drives me batty as well...

Just take a look at the article, and you'll see the main point of the thing isn't the looks but the inner works.

Oh come on, João, do you honeslty expect me to go beyond judging a book by its cover?! Darwin slinks off to do as directed...  :-[

+1 for the screenshots not really having the WOW factor (for me) - looks like clunky verison of OS X.

OK above "worked"! Oh, and good luck in your quest PaladinMJ!

PS Went looking for the PCMag app I was reminded of and found it: PackEmIn

Hopefully the above will come through properly (ie won't ACTUALLY create a hyperlink!).

I dimly recall a PCMag utility coming out in the last year that does what you describe in the first part of your post - check here for possibliities.

Yes, you're right Frank. After posting the above I went off in search of the feature in ANY of the file synching/comparing tools that I have  - none of them feature it, that I can tell. I meant to post back here to that effect and got sidetracked  :o
3349
Heh, heh - I was going to suggest Evernote as well (it really IS fantastic) but it's a lot more complex (I think) thank Heftie Hippie's wife requires. Maybe not complex, but feature rich. It's also not available from the context menu outside of Outlook and IE (AFAICT).

I can't leave well enough alone... These comments from the Jon Galloway blog are illuminating as well:

Sadly, not only microsoft went this way, Logitech decided to follow them and also use the "extended" function keys. Fortunately, my logitech iTouch configuration program allows this nifty setting called "Keep original function" :)

Maybe you could try installing the logitech itouch drivers, and use them for your microsoft "intelli"type keyboards? Since they're all multimedia keyboards, it might work.

Gods, I have been annoyed by this for so long, until I got so bothered I had to find a fix. Your post prompted me to explore my own settings, and that made me find the above solution, THANKS!

@Eddemans: a HACKsaw maybe? ;-)

Or you could always use the scanmap-trick, and then pry loose the keys and rearange them on the keyboard. (gentle, but persistant, force works on a surprising amount of keyboards)

Wow, what a relief. I just plugged in an old Dell keyboard that doesn't have an F-lock key. However, windows was treating the keyboard as if the keys were F-locked. After two days of searching, I came across this solution. It worked great. Many thanks!
