Codename 'Mini-Review Marathon'

"If you read nothing else on our site, read the newsletter!"

1. Mini-Review Marathon

2. New Contest - Cody's Excellent Vacation
Now's your chance to win a rare DonationCoder.com collector's item.. Worth over TEN MILLION DOLLARS !!!! (disclaimer: may be worth substantially less). Cody the bird (the official DC mascot) has absconded with a big chunk of your donations and he's taking an expensive around-the-world vacation. Only you can help him send back some postcards from his trip.  Visit the CodyCards Page and help him write a postcard. Make sure you submit your entry to the public gallery where others can see it. On March 1st, 2006 we will choose some of the funniest entries and those winners will get a custom item of their choice from the HyperRich Friends of DonationCoder.com Cafepress Shop with their winning postcard image on it.

5. New Software Discoveries
One of the favorite things to do on the DC forum is talk about new software discoveries.  Everyone likes to learn about some new program they didn't know they needed.  Since the last newsletter we've come across some very cool stuff:

6. Site News
There's always room for improvement on our site, and we're always open to making changes and listening to your suggestions.  Due to popular demand we've added two new sections on the forum, one for talking about Programming related issues, and one to help people locate the best programs for any given task:

7. Program Updates - The Calm before the Storm
We've got a bunch of new programs in development, and forthcoming major updates of Find and Run Robot 2 and Process Tamer will be out soon.  Some recent updates:

8. Coding Snacks - Teamwork Edition
Skrommel continues his Coding Snack binge - adding new utilities each week based on user requests.  Recently he's got some company on the Coding Snacks section of our forum as well, with several other AutoHotkey and now FBSL scripters joining in.

thanks for catching this!

i always test the installs, but it's been a while since i built them and because of the way the self unpacker works and the directory i run the test install in, it was working for me but for everyone else the actual setup.exe file was missing, so when it unpacks and tries to run the installer it was failing with that unhelpful error message.

all fixed now.

anyone seriously interested in writing a review after reading through some of our previous reviews (see the archive tool, image management tool review, and screencasting tool review as some good examples), please drop me a line at [email protected], or visit us on the irc chat channel.

i've started contacting print magazines about syndicating our reviews; if anyone has suggestions of magazines they think might be appropriate, let us know.

does this mean we should try to keep you off it but fail and put you on it anyway?  ;D

im not asking for commitments to once per month - in fact im not asking for any commitments at all, just trying to find some people who are interested in embarking on a journey to make our review section a real showcase for the site, and expressing my own commitment to make sure those who put in the effort for this are appropriately recognized for the substantial contribution that their reviews make to the site.  i think having a regular frequent high quality review, syndicated in print, would let us reach a whole additional different group of people who would respond positively to the rest of the site once they found us.

id just like to say i probably should not have ever mentioned the term "autohotkey VS. autoit"
both programs have active communities and seem like fantastic wonderful projects, and i don't in any way mean to put them against each other.  both are great and different people will have different uses for each.

there has been a report in the past about missing context menu items on right click in the thumbnail browser, the only reason i havent spent more time trying to track it down is because that browser thumbnail window is due to be replaced by me with a smarter thumbnail browser in the near future.

nice find! i never heard of that before.  definitely useful to study for inspiration.

as for #1,
i should put this in the helpfile, but here goes:
go to your screenshot captor directory and there you will find:
ScreenshotCaptor.ini
DonationCoder_ScreenshotCaptor_Key.dat

the first is your preferences, the second is your license key; that's all you need to do to do what you want.

#2. good idea, ill see if i can add it.

#3. one rule i have is after a couple people request the same thing i know i have to implement it; your not the first to ask for this, so i will implement it right away.

#4. i want this tool as well.
since the lefthand thumbnails is a shell browser, you SHOULD be able to use a tool like shelluploader on those files.  sc also has a Tools menu where you can customize exterenal tools which should also make this possible.  i really am hoping to see some people configure and post how to configure tools to do what you are saying, as well as a tool for emailing images, etc.

the latest poll on the site is quite illuminating:
https://www.donation...index.php?topic=1991

it shows that second to new software releases (which we should have quite a few of in the upcoming months), reviews are the next most wanted thing on the site.

This matches with my feeling that the Reviews are the single most critical aspect of DonationCoder to improve.

I think the quality of our reviews is great, and with a little tweaking, i think we can set a new standard in software reviews.

The problem, as we all know, is the frequency of the reviews.  It's just a ton of work to do these reviews, pure and simple, and *most* people just aren't cut out for writing things like this.  It takes some discipline and love of detail, and real self-motivation.

I've done my share of them, and they are quite satisfying to do, but also exhausting.  Our arguably two best reviews have come from guest reviewers Zaine and Nudone, and both of them had to take a mental vacation afterwards ;)

If we agree that having regular reviews on the site would be a huge difference in terms of making DonationCoder.com a useful site, which i certainly believe, it seems to me that we need to get serious about finding a good long term solution.

I would like to propose the following:  I would like to put out a call for a small group of "Reviewer Elite", people who have as much love for writing good reviews as some of the coders here have of programming.  I don't know if such people exist - it seems like they must but they may be rare.

If we could find 4-8 such people, each doing one review each every 1-2 months, then the site could publish a new review each week.  This is an ambitious goal but i believe it can be met if we can find the right people.

This team of elite reviewers on our site would be treated as the important assets to the site that they would be.  That would mean the following:
1) we would work hard to get them donations from readers and provide some monetary reward from the main donations.
3) we would give them ad revenue from generated from the reviews.
4) we would get them paid syndication in a print magazine.
5) we would get them free software, both to help their reviewing and as a reward.

In other words, we would be looking for a team of reviewers with the same donation-based spirit as the rest of this site, and recognize that their contribution to the site is as important as that of a programmer adding a program.

It's hard to say how much money a reviewer might make at this point - but when you combine the google ad money with syndicated magazine money and contributions from us and readers, and free software, we are probably talking about several hundred dollars per review, perhaps more depending on the print syndication situation which i am currently investigating.

I don't want to turn this into a bounty type situation where people are doing this just for the money - we want to find people with a love of reviewing the way we have a love of programming.  But it is a recognition that these reviews are damn hard work, and deserve recognition and reward like anything else.

Thoughts welcome please - let's figure out how to make this work.

this might also be a good time to state my view (and a view talked about on this forum in the past with regard to paying for software), that there are a lot of issues that go into deciding which program to use besides just the actual program itself.  ie. support, community, documentation, etc.

we welcome discussion of different apps and their strengths and weaknesses here, not an add at all.
it's fascinating to hear some of the history of these two apps - i had no idea they had a common ancestor in code.

i always thought autoit was more user friendly but less powerful, but maybe i need to re-evaluate the idea that its less powerful.

Find And Run Robot / Re: All these F+R ideas are wonderful
« Last post by mouser on January 28, 2006, 08:18 PM »
just a heads up that i'm going to split off the launch/dock posts and move them in a thread to the launch bar commander section.
i'm interested in a much more visually traditional launch bar, that is built for holding a lot of items in a hierarchical structure, like a menu.  truelaunchbar or freelaunchbar  is probably the closest match to what i hope launch bar commander becomes.
it won't have any of the flashy animation of rocketdock, but it should have some very advanced features in terms of being able to support drag and drop of items into commands, etc.

i hope that once its out in the wild we will be able to think of new features to add to it to make it a bit unique.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Another similar app (disclaimer: I haven't tried it)
« Last post by mouser on January 28, 2006, 08:12 PM »
ok understood now - basically you're just asking for a keyboard-centric way to do what the right click popupmenu provides for in farr.  i.e. easily add items to an alias group, etc.

this matches with the rest of the discussion here regarding having a way access and select "operations" on a search result easily from the keyboard.
