Site/Forum Features / Re: Promo "User Bars/Banners" for DonationCoder.com
« Last post by mouser on February 05, 2006, 03:32 AM »
love it!

i liked your suggestions as well, especially the idea for maybe some kind of "emergency override" hotkey where you could correct the situation where a high priority app is suddenly taking over your cpu, and the idea of maybe having an option that says to not lower priority of apps that are in the foreground (nice idea!).  Adding these ideas to todo list for v3.

Living Room / Improving Review section;what website has the best layout for reviews?
« Last post by mouser on February 04, 2006, 11:52 PM »
In our continuing effort to take our review section to the next level, and make it the best software review site on the web, i'm asking for some help figuring out how we can improve things.

Some preliminary thoughts:
  • break reviews into multipl pages with easy navigation between them
  • a separate 'page' for each product, plus some inro, comparison, and summary pages would make it easier to maintain/update and write and read.
  • make a more inviting start page where people can see existing reviews nicely presented to choose from.

I'd love to hear more ideas for ways to improve the review section.
And I'm also asking people to post links to website designs that you think *present* their reviews in a nice way, both in terms of presenting a single review and for presenting the collection of reviews to browse.  Remember it's not the content of these sites we care about for this question, just the manner of presenting reviews/articles.

thanks!

Living Room / Update to Discounts listing page and some more new discounts
« Last post by mouser on February 04, 2006, 10:54 PM »
We're begining to get more companies that want to offer discounts to members of the site.

I've added more some new discounts to the Members Only section: https://www.donation...index.php?board=18.0

And I've updated the Discounts page to make it a little easier to identify discounts that are still valid, when they expire, and whether we have reviewed them or not: https://www.donation...Discounts/index.html

All of these companies have also donated some copies for us to give away.. I'm not sure if we should add them now to the February giveaway drawing submission or save them for next month. Opinions?

try FASTR:

http://randomchaos.com/games/fastr/

Fastr is a game that uses flickr images. It loads ten images that all share a common tag, one by one, and you guess what the tag is. When you guess right, the tag will turn blue. Then you can watch the pictures until the next set begins. The faster you guess, the more points you get. The points are reset every five minutes. Don't forget to enter a player name. Please email questions and comments. The correct answer doubles as a link to the flickr page with all the photos.

Vasilios Freeware Applications

some really nice stuff there, index here:

I'm always constructing applications that are useful for my programming jobs. When I think that some of them can be helpful to someone else, I beautify them and I publish them.
Until 2004, I was constructing applications with an interface, tooltips and help files in my native language (Greek) that they were publishing in my country's Computer Magazines and they were offered from Greek Downloading Portals. This year I decided to turn worldwide.
I believe in Freeware for all, that's why you will find here only that kind of Applications .
Hoping that I've helped you somehow,

if you like them send him a donation and drop him a note saying you appreciate what his approach.

i need to modify the command caption to make it clearer that it is the one you should select.

« Last post by mouser on February 04, 2006, 05:22 AM »
to clarify what i was saying from before, i was saying we cant insist that the filename comes first,
because sometimes there is no filename, for example when you want to send an email.

there is always an action however, so it is possible to insist the user always starts out specifying an action.

or it is possible to start out allowing both, as we do now.

Developer's Corner / Is customization worth it?

A great topic for debate, and relevant to many of the discussions we've had about various programs on the site.

Two articles worth reading on the subject of "Is customization worth it?"

Developer's Corner / Welcome to Programmer's Corner - February 4, 2006
« Last post by mouser on February 04, 2006, 02:36 AM »
This section opened on Feb 4, 2006.  It's going to be pretty empty for a while until it has a chance to build some momentum, but I'm hoping we can have some useful programming related discussions here.

Discussions regarding programming problems, programming ideas, programming tools and components, etc. are all welcome here.  The programming language doesn't matter.

We're going to start doing to some real programming tool reviews on the site as well, so keep your eyes open :)

I invite people to post links to other programming related forums and sites.

Web page here:

  • fSekrit is a small application for keeping encrypted notes.
  • The real advantage of fSekrit is that notes are truly self-contained; the editor program and your note are merged together into a tiny self-contained program file, removing the need to install a special application to view your data.
  • This makes fSekrit ideal for keeping encrypted notes on, for example, USB flash drives.
  • Another advantage of using fSekrit is that your un-encrypted data is never stored on your harddisk. With a traditional encryption utility you would have to decrypt your file to disk, view or edit it, and then re-encrypt it, and unless you use secure file wiping tools, it would be a trivial matter for someone to to retrieve your un-encrypted data, even though you have deleted it. This can't be done with fSekrit, though, since it never stores your un-encrypted data on disk.
  • fSekrit uses very strong encryption (256-bit AES/Rijndael in CBC mode) to ensure that your data is never at risk.
  • Self contained fSekrit notefiles are tiny! Only 40k plus the size of your text.

Best File/Folder Compare Tool / Meta-diff and Diff Comander
« Last post by mouser on February 03, 2006, 07:57 PM »
Got this email last week and forgot to post it; looks like some interest programs:

First of all there's an Open Source tool I'm involved in which basically
is a shell extension to compare two files / folders using any comparison
tool (you can also use different tools based in the file's extensions):

http://meta-diff.sourceforge.net/

The tool is based on BCShellEx which once was written explicitly for
Beyond Compare. Maybe you'd like to include a link to this tool on your
page, just as a reference.

Secondly, I'd like to encourage you to also review the "Diff Comander
Bundle Edition" (which also comes with "Visual Comparer") available here:

this might actually work well with multiple monitors -
i can definitely see using a dedicated TOUCH SCREEEN monitor for moving windows instead of minimizing (or using a virtual desk overview).

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR version 2 - discuss the best way to handle 'actions'
« Last post by mouser on February 03, 2006, 11:39 AM »
i think its impossible to do what we want and have subject first.
the only choices are always verb first, or combined verb+subject first.

why cant you do subject firt? well because we want to support things like being able to say:
"email [email protected]"
or
"define subjunctive"
or
"google happiness"

ie after you type the verb only then does it know how to interpret what you type.

but we could stick with the approach we have now which combines the two and tried to guess what you want.

requiring a verb first (which would default to "launch" if you hit space or tab) would make life a lot cleaner.

the main problem is it makes the 95% case more troublesome.

fantastic.
you know witha  little bit of work and combined with m_s's stuff on A-book, and maybe a quick commentary on other programs saying why they don't quite make the cute,  this would make a great full dc review..

i wonder if superboyac or superboyac and m_s could be convinced to team up and flesh this out into a full review? i think you're half way there already..

part of the challenge is figuring out a solution that doesnt require opening the help file and searching for a day looking for the magic keystroke to do things..

it's hard trying to do all these things at once, make it suitable for newbies, and pros, and support all these different ways of working.
