I posted this under their "Report a problem" in Soluto Support Community

Are you going to create a totally better way to update Soluto, please? On my Vista it is necessary to do everything from scratch; I must click each and every program just like the first time I installed Soluto Beta! [hint] I have many programs, that is why I use Soluto... [/hint]

General Software Discussion / NotePro from today's GAOTD
« Last post by Curt on March 30, 2011, 11:56 AM »
I hadn't heard of this one before, but was pleasantly surprised, when testing. It doesn't open quite as fast as I would like it to, but otherwise I have nothing bad to say about it:
NotePro, part of today's giveaway: Crystal Office

The Office suite's normal price is $35, but is of course free "today".
NotePro is part of the suite, but as a stand-alone it is priced $20.

NotePro, ZDNet Editors' Pick

If you need to create or edit text files and want something with more options than the default Notepad/WordPad programs that come with Windows but don't need the power and complexity of a full-fledged word-processor, check out NotePro. Although it has many powerful features typically found in a word-processor, it's very simple to use.

NotePro has a clean, attractive interface that puts nearly all the options you'll need right on the well-designed button bar. NotePro handles standard text files, and also creates and saves Rich Text Format, Word, Windows Write, and HTML files used by Microsoft Word and other word-processors. You can have multiple documents open at one time.

Other options include complete control over text appearance. Use any TrueType font installed on your system, control the font size and attributes (bold, italic, underscore, or strikethrough), and also use colored text, including background fills.

Onscreen you can quickly increase or decrease text size, add super- or subscript text, and change the text alignment (flush left, centered, or flush right). You can also quickly create numbered or bulleted lists.

Like a word-processor, NotePro lets you create custom "styles" for your text - define a font, face, attributes, color, alignment, etc. - that lets you easily apply a style to specific text. Great for headers, captions, or entire paragraphs of text you need to distinctively separate.

NotePro also has a built-in Spelling Checker, and lets you import text from existing files. NotePro also let you embed or link to objects and images.

Other features include changing the case of text to all upper or lower, Calculator, and Character Map, font preview in the font selection window so you get a quick peek at what a font looks like, and print preview.

NotePro is easy-to-use, and provides plenty of features. In a fairly small package it incorporates nearly all of the most-used features of a word-processor without having to learn how to use one; in fact, if you use a word-processor frequently, you might find yourself using NotePro instead for many documents.

Seriously, i havent found much useful in these optimisation programs,

I have this fixed idea that one day I will get my hands on some fully updated installation CDs for Win2000, XP, and Vista, and then I will let these "optimizers" and "cleaners" do all they can - so when I then reboot, I will have a CD ready to perform the already necessary repair-installations, and voila!: I end up having a CLEAN install, without loosing anything important. ;-)

Excellent review.

Nice to read that one can also have a literal $5-per-month solution, instead of, say, pay-(48x$2.92=)$139.99-here-and-now.

The seed/harddrive solution is for US citizens only.

where did my post go? I am certain that I proofread it after uploading. Have DC been hit by something today?

-good point, Thomas.

I have a key for HyperSnap 6, but am "merely" using FastStone Capture, because it is so delightful user-friendly. However, HyperSnap 7 seems so far to become much more user-friendly than version 6 has been:

Version 7 beta tests started, and we currently have a poll for users to vote on new features to add to version 7 of HyperSnap. More information at HyperSnap Feedback and Beta Tests Forum.

-thanks. I don't know what extension did it, maybe Mr Tech Toolkit, but I right-clicked every disabled extension inside the add-ons manager, and clicked "force"-something. The same trick, I guess.

-thanks.

Disable QTTabBar in Internet Explorer by right-clicking the menubar and unchecking it. Then enable it via Manage Add-ons. Then enable it in Windows Explorer via the View > Toolbars menu.

The next version will address this annoyance permanently.
-QT forum

so far I have solved the problem by not launching Internet Explorer... while I am waiting for QT 1.5 Final. Version 1.5 beta 1 has just been launched, so I expect the final version to be ready in a month or so.
3311
okay, and thanks for the empathy. I already have removed version 4, because the many disabled extensions made version 3 redundant. I think I will wait reinstalling version 4 until most extensions have been updated.
3312
... Now I know what to do...

---------------
Common info into the air:
3.6 and 4 can not run at the same time.

Ohh... I also have to be careful what to install into version 4 because it installs into version 3 at the same time! Hmm... it seems I may have to THINK!!  :o
3313
-thanks.

Hmm... 30 extensions were disabled. Now I know what to do... !yawn.gif

no, I am not goin' to take this offer:

Of course because I already have a key for this version!  :-[

Can I somehow install & test Firefox 4 without overwriting version 3?

« Last post by Curt on March 28, 2011, 06:18 PM »
I think I might remember this problem from a previous version of Internet Explorer, but I have no idea how to solve it. I use some programs to extend the use of Vista Explorer. However, these programs' toolbars are showing up in my new IE 9. I never used IE version 8, so I don't know if they also would have caused problems back then. QT Tabbar, etcetera, is making IE 9 look like this:

INTERNET Explorer 9:

2011-03-29_012201.gif

!!
If I remove them from IE they will also be removed from Explorer itself, and this is not acceptable; I totally want to keep them (in Explorer). There must be a trick, I just can't find it.
Please?!  :tellme:

General Software Discussion / Re: SIGIL, free ePub editor
« Last post by Curt on March 26, 2011, 06:10 PM »
from "Making epub happen. The development blog of Sigil, the epub editor"

http://sigildev.blog...and-uh-bit-more.html
excerpt:

An analysis of EPUB3 (and, uh, a bit more)

... In EPUB2, JavaScript execution was under RFC2119 “SHOULD NOT”; for all intents and purposes, this means forbidden. It’s not a “MUST NOT”, but still.

In EPUB3, JS support is now optional. This means you can start using JS in your epub books, yippee! You can now go all Web 2.0 on you e-books. I’ll talk about why this is bad in a moment, but first I’ll like to give credit where credit is due and note that the spec text explicitly mentions  that content creators should avoid using JS if at all possible. Here’s a quote:

   >> Scripting consequently should be used only when essential to the User experience, as it greatly increases the likelihood that content will not be portable across all Reading Systems and creates barriers to accessibility and content reusability. <<

Sadly, no one will listen to this. But at least the IDPF has this warning, even though it won't do shit. Now that JS support has moved from "should not" to "optional", people will go out of their way to redefine "essential to the user experience" so that it includes JS. This will break horribly. We'll get epub books created solely for iBooks and all other Reading Systems can go to hell.

Progressive enhancement? We will never see it. The people who create epub books are not web developers, they work in publishing. They have no idea what writing code for the web looks like (or writing code at all for that matter), so we'll see hacks upon hacks that work on iBooks pretty much by accident and on nothing else. I've always said that the day that the epub specs start mandating JS support is the day those same specs jump the shark. We're not quite there yet, but the gates of Hell are now slightly ajar.

This is what will happen:
   1. EPUB3 brings "optional" JS support.

   2. Publishers start adding crappy JS to their books hoping it will make them "stand out", "embrace the future", "fuck goats" or whatever.

   3. We now have thousands of books with JS scripts in them that are absolutely useless but whose execution is nevertheless required, otherwise reading the book is impossible. You know, things like special navigation menus, buttons to expand example source code, footnotes in "tooltip" style windows or similar "brilliant design ideas" that stop working when you don't run the book's JS.

   4. EPUB4 now demands JS support. I mean really, you can't expect publishers to go over all those crappy epubs and rework them with progressive enhancement in mind, do you? No, no, no. They'll just lobby the IDPF to make JS support mandatory, and they'll succeed.

   5. Welcome to the web circa 2000! Ah, what a fun place that was. ...

« Last post by Curt on March 25, 2011, 05:43 AM »
I have used Q-Dir file manager for several years, but have never taken the opportunity to test any of the other small programs on the site, because I thought they all were plugins for Q-Dir. Now I have come to realize that several are stand-alone programs, so of course I started testing right away. One of them turned out to be The Fastest font viewer I can think of. No fancy features; it is not a manager or an editor, just a freeware font viewer: http://www.softwareo...=Freeware/FontViewOK

Features:
Quick overview of all fonts.
Printing with print preview function
Changeable font size, style and color
Instant access to the Windows Fonts folder, to delete the fonts which you don´t need any longer.
New Feature: List fonts from a specific folder, for a quick review of the Fonts without installation, or if required a quick installation via right-click.

------------------------------
Suitable for Microsoft Windows :
Servers 2000/2003/2005 Win 98/XP/Vista and Windows-7 x64/x86

Edited:
But if they have sold the program, their own 'death' may of course not have any impact on Daminion.
