The "Expose clone for Windows" category is CROWDED. Defintely a category in which one is spoiled for choice, both free and shareware. yatta, are you by chance the developer of winExpose?

Thanks for the input, CodeTrucker. I might as well give it a "go". I'm running BitDefender as my real-time AV and will report back with my experience. The firewall continues to be well-behaved, using no CPU that I can detect and 17/39 MB of RAM/VM split between its two processes.

Hi Jim - I've not tried the scheduling yet (I've never used it before). I will attempt to do so today and get back to you.

I tend to agree, Vegas. However, let's give ashiswa the benefit of the doubt and see if s/he takes your advice and starts a separate thread introducing themselves and their product.

PS I was initially "with Lashiec" WRT the SFFS 3 GUI but over time it grew on me and I find it incredibly intuitive and easy to use. The ergonomics of the GUI in v.4 beta are cumbersome and seem to require more clicking and searching to get things done. Just a quick observation though... early days in my use of it.
3306
I've been running the SFFS 4 beta since yesterday and have mixed feelings about it. I am not fussed about the new GUI - I really like the way version 3 placed everything on one tab (ie listing profiles and allowing you to create/edit them on the same tab). This is gone in v.4. You edit or create profiles in isolation on a different tab. It's a small detail, but it doesn't feel as convenient to have to open a separate tab to edit or create new profilesWhat I do like is that ability to select as many profiles as you like and click a "run" button which then processes them in turn - very useful!

PS I didn't go for the offer to install Threatfire with the firewall but have just been reading about it - anyone have any experience with it? How does it "play" with a traditional AV solution? The website suggests that it complements traditional AV solutions, rather than replaces them.

4WD - thanks for directing me to PCTools Firewall Plus 3http://www.pctools.com/firewall/. I've been running it for a few hours and it is proving to be very lightweight and relatively inobtrusive  Have to see what I think in a week, but so far I am impressed.

What I like about Index Your Files is that it compresses the index when it's not in use. I'm not aware of any other indexer doing that. I also like that it doesn't require installation.

OK - finally got to my vinyl collection - couldn't find a single one with a barcode, so it appears to me to be moot point. FWIW, the last LP I bought new was a Rush album published in 1987. It doesn't have a barcode printed on it, either. I wonder if the barcodes were printed on the labels attached to the shrink wrap? I no longer remember.

Sorry for making improvements. It is my main/only information management tool, so when I require some new feature, I code it. This new feature was coded to create a testimonial page from SQLNotes users (will be published when I get required consentments)

No need to apologise! It's awesome - I'm just a bit breathless from trying to keep up. Note to self: make a concerted effort to dabble in SQLNotes this week.

Was about to thank the poster for the nice find on q10, but after reading the replies, you guys just turned this into keyboard tech support. So much for forum organization I guess.

Mea culpa  :-[... Shouldn't preclude you from thanking the poster for bringing q10 to your attention, though, should it  :P

See! This illustrates my point - I updated to the January 22 build and it's been superseded... Yet I hadn't even had a chance to take it for a spin. Let's hope for better luck with today's build  :o

Update: I WILL try scanning barcodes for vinyl, but reading throught the user's manual it seems that LP's can only be entered manually. More on this this afternoon...

I have Music Collector and, AFAICT, it does not support adding LP's via barcode. I have a box full of LPs and HAVEN'T had a chance to try entering one or more of those via barcode, but I will try to do this this afternoon and post back here with the result.

Yes, thanks 4WD - looks like we've had similar experiences. I'll take a look at PcTools as well.

I have run a number of firewalls (still have a current licence for ZoneAlarm Pro) over the years and just recently uinstalled the latest of them - Webroot's Desktop Firewall. There is the overhead, which I object to, and then there is the intrusiveness. I surf the web behind a wireless router with a hardware firewall so don't feel that I am compromising on security (I run A/V and A/S and have XP Sp-2's firewall enabled). I should probably re-install a firewall and have it available to run when I am surfing the net in airports and other public places, but those times are so predictable that I will have lead time to install something when the need arises.

Am I mistaken in thinking that I am secure?

Wow, Pierre!

I'm really struggling to keep up here! I'm amazed at how far SQLNotes (don't change the name for me, I like it!) has come in such a short time. Every build brings little tweaks and additions that enhance the whole. Very impressed.

PS I gave up on X1 and other desktop indexers for Outlook files and went back to Lookout (upon which Windows Desktop Search is loosely based). Works like a charm. Installers are still, I think, floating around for the last full version, which is free to use.

Different type of solution (and violates the "company is paranoid about software installs" comment), but there are a number of applications such as EZ-Detach and DetachPipe that can automatically save attachments to a location of the user's choice and insert a link to the new location. I use EZ-Detach and have tried DetachPipe (it's very nice) and they can both be configured six ways from Sunday. DetachPipe will even recognise instances where the same file is attached to more than one e-mail and save only one copy (while inserting links to it in all affected e-mails), further saving disk space. I've requested similar funcitonality for EZ-Detach and it is now on the developer's "to do" list.

The operation of these add-ons is seamless and DRASTICALLY reduces the size of a pst. Just a thought...

Hi app - hope you sort this out. I noted in passing that someone commenting on the Jon Galloway blog noted this problem with a Dell keyboard that lacked an F-Lock key but that exhibited the behaviour. However, if only your F1 is affected, it seems odd, and a problem apart, indeed.

« Last post by Darwin on January 22, 2008, 11:59 PM »
Jim - hope you are able to work this out. On other fronts, I get that 30 or so second delay the first time I start TC (or TC UP) in a windows session and then it settles down... It's quite annoying (and I can only imagine what it must be like to have DOpus do that EVERY time you inbvoke the context menu). I'm going to try a tip I've rediscovered that superboyac gave me about this back in May or so: press and hold down the RIGHT mouse button to invoke the context menu (presumably without the setting enabled that Dirhael provided). Yup, it works and I'm right that it works with that setting disabled. There is still a pause but it's not nearly as bad.

EDITED for clarity (did I succeed :o?!)

Much better! Looks good

Yes, I can confirm that DOpus 9 behaves as expected when "delay double-clicking" (a technical term) an image file (ie the result is that the filename is highlighted allowing me to rename the image file).
