Living Room / Re: Dead Hot Chicks Boost Weather Ratings?
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 07, 2014, 03:33 PM »
I guess it does posses a kind of "what a waste" pathos when a hot chick dies.  Since even chicks are hot for hot chicks.  ;)

But it is strange when I click on the radar to get the current temp here in Miami and they are trying to scare me with talk about killer blizzards.  Somehow I don't feel threatened.  :)

Living Room / Dead Hot Chicks Boost Weather Ratings?
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 06, 2014, 06:38 PM »
Dead Hot Chicks Boost Weather Ratings?  It would seem like it.  I go to weather radar on Weather.com several times a day as Miami area if quite volatile.  Seems like more often than not there's some news feed about a college age girl dead due to something weather related.  Don't men die in bad weather?

Just seems to be in poor taste somehow.

Edit:  Of course there's a pic of the deceased woman with the story.  I haven't seen a Plain Jane yet.

In the same vein I wrote a TreePadGen program with the idea of making a node for every file in a download folder.  In the right pane you can enter description. It works well with the free TreePadLite.

See included Readme.txt for details.

If you set chromium background color to something subdued, but have default white as the window background color in the registry, I believe you will get a bright flash of white before the chromium setting kicks in.  At least that's how I remember it.

General Software Discussion / General consensus on Free Boxmaker Software?
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 05, 2014, 11:02 AM »
General consensus on Free Boxmaker Software?  I read the threads.  Unfortunately I'm at the Public Library.  They screen out almost all downloads.  Even open source stuff like on SourceForge.net.

So I haven't been able to try QuickBox or the other freebies.  When I get on another network I'll be able to download.  But I'm curious if the enthusiasm for these tools has evaporated or one has risen to the top etc..  :)

When I used Fractal Flames as wallpaper it made windows white backgrounds seem like glare.  I think you can change the default windows background color using this registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Colors\Window

set it to decimal RGB values separated by commas.  The default value should be
255,255,255

Unfortunately it doesn't change the Explorer window background color.  But I seem to remember using chromium at the time and it working with that.

A good idea to use ERUNT and/or make a restore point before changing the Registry though.

I think he means the Windows OS registration key...as in the sticker on laptop is faded.  Not the keyboard...

I took "activating windows" as making the window active.  Oh well.

Edit: I would be curious to find out of the server interprets this as a "dictionary attack" and breaks off server contact.  I would be prone to calling Microsoft and explaining the situation before getting too deep into the 1s and 0s.

I'm not familiar with the 5 x 5 keyboard.  But if it generates virtual key codes why not try a program that just echos the key code?

BrowserBunch has a similar purpose.  It comes with a Tray Hotkey called Browser Bunch Session Save.  It's just macro driven.  So it's not smooth.  But the advantage is that BrowserBunch works with most non-IE browsers that accept multiple urls on the command line.

As alternative to Session Save or typing you can drag the current url from the addressbar to an editor such as EditPad Lite that will catch the drop in a text file.

It takes a bit of setup to load your browser buttons.  But once set up it's similar to using BrowserChooser except that it reads a text file with a url per line and opens them all at once.

There's a Readme.txt in the zip with the gory details.

There's a screen shot at the top of this thread:

Hey Stoic Joker, maybe that can be a new measure of speed for thumb drives.

Stoic Joker Not pissed off = fast
Stoic Joker pissed off = acceptable
Stoic Joker jumping on his thumb drive = slow (and broken)

Right.  A really snappy drive would have an NPO rating of 10.  Mediocre would be 6.  :)

I keep it in my pocket and I'm way heavier than MilesAhead indicated he weighs
What popped the back off mine was body weight directly on the drive due to sleeping outside.  I tried to shift pocket contents out of harm's way.  But once you're asleep all that goes by the wayside.  :)

I guess the corrugated design is pretty rugged.  The connector is still solidly attached.  :)

Edit: btw those are some serious sequential numbers.  My very first USB was a SanDisk.  I think it died after a dozen uses.  The shell was Titanium but the "sliding guts" design was flimsy.  I go for no moving parts now.  Unless I get an irresistible price I go solid body.  Of course it's all what you get.  If none give you a problem then they are rock solid. :)  Tough to predict with these things.  The flimsy bits tend to be out of view.  :(

I have only purchased one USB 3.0 thumb drive so far.  It's this one:
http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16820211573

On the down side there's no way to attach a lanyard or put it on a keychain as is.  The cap does snap onto the back end though.

On the plus side, copying one large file, say 1 GB from HD onto the USB I consistently got 35 MB/s write speed.  The unit has no moving parts.  After months of rugged service(meaning being in my pocket and sustaining my weight, around 200 LBS) the only damage was the end cap that the cap snaps onto, popped off.  A bit of crazy glue would fix it. Now I keep it in my Laptop shoulder bag.  But I think subjecting it nightly to my body mass as I lay on top of it was a fair test.  :)

So I'm assuming this 64 GB model would be similar:
http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16820211731

For $33 and change with 64 GB capacity and free shipping(I assume by media mail snail mail : Edit - no doubt limited to the Continental U.S.) I'm tempted to buy it myself.

The 32 GB model I have as a Macrium Reflect WinPE boot USB.  It boots my Windows 8.0 Laptop fine.

His idea? Putting a key on the keyboard that automatically added .com after wherever the cursor was.
Heh heh.  Strange the ideas people have.  I had a friend who was a shipyard welder.  He was always coming up with little ideas.  One that he wanted to patent was welding bicycle handbrakes on wheelchairs.  He showed me these patents of braking systems on wheelchairs.  One was an automatic parking brake with 90 or 100 moving parts.  When the person took their weight off the seat it engaged the brake.  Apparently there was nothing simple for the person pushing the wheelchair to retard momentum going downhill or down ramps etc..

I told him I thought he could make money welding the brakes on.  He should rent a garage, get welding equipment, sets of brakes, and advertise.  But he was obsessed with patenting it first or else someone would steal the concept.  I'm sure my friend was a competent welder.  But he did like to knock back cold ones on occasion.  :)

Living Room / Hypothetical hypothetical question
« Last post by MilesAhead on March 31, 2014, 09:39 AM »
I don't have a great idea at the moment.  So this is a real Hypothetical hypothetical question.  Say you thought of this great concept.  But you're not certain if the idea has already been bandied about or developed.  If you google for it, it's gone.  Because it will show up in the search tracking and someone with resources will steal it if it's any good.

How to find out if it's original without getting ripped off?

Post New Requests Here / Re: Add to archive "FileName.xpi"

When doing by hand most people compress to zip, then rename to xpi.  You might post a follow up to that script thread and explain how you would like to use it.  The author may be willing to offer some variations.  Especially since his script uses WinRar already.

After that it would just be a registry edit to add your context menu item to All Files, and if you like to All Folders.  There are plenty of pages showing how to do that already on the web.  If not on Windows Seven Tutorials, I know I've seen it in HowToGeek.

This ahk script is meant to create a command line with the selected files rather than launch an instance of the program for each file selected in Explorer:
http://www.autohotke...2Bwinrar#entry629031

The only way I can think to get .xpi would be to compress to .zip and rename the .zip to .xpi.
