General Software Discussion / Re: Dasher
« Last post by mouser on February 13, 2006, 03:30 PM »
that is extremely cool.

from web page:
Dasher is an information-efficient text-entry interface, driven by natural continuous pointing gestures. Dasher is a competitive text-entry system wherever a full-size keyboard cannot be used - for example,

when operating a computer one-handed, by joystick, touchscreen, trackball, or mouse;
when operating a computer with zero hands (i.e., by head-mouse or by eyetracker);
on a palmtop computer;
on a wearable computer.
The eyetracking version of Dasher allows an experienced user to write text as fast as normal handwriting - 29 words per minute; using a mouse, experienced users can write at 39 words per minute.

Dasher can be used to write efficiently in any language.

Dasher is fast and fun to learn. (If you don't believe us, see what users round the world say.)

Dasher is free software.

To make the interface efficient, we use the predictions of a language model to determine how much of the world is devoted to each piece of text. Probable pieces of text are given more space, so they are quick and easy to select. Improbable pieces of text (for example, text with spelling mistakes) are given less space, so they are harder to write. The language model learns all the time: if you use a novel word once, it is easier to write next time.

A big advantage of Dasher over other predictive text-entry interfaces that offer word-completions to the user is that it is mode-free: the user does not need to switch from a writing mode to an "accept-model-predictions" mode.

Another advantage is that it is easy to train the model on any writing style: simply load up an example file, then write away!

Backup Guide / Re: Don't forget Syncback !!!!
« Last post by mouser on February 13, 2006, 03:08 PM »
actually syncback has been mentioned in several threads on this forum (do a search and youll see) - and it has lots of fans; clearly a good program.

our backup review was kind of a combo review, and we didn't end up doing a full comparison of all file backup tools - our primary focus was on incremental versioned backup functions due to the nature of the review.  would be nice to do a comprehensive review this year on backup tools.

it's true they have a non-expiring version and your interpretation is sensible: it's really $110 for non expiring full version, and the rest of the licenses are just special case oddities.

as for ideas and suggestions:

inspiration from your avatar:
call it..  Snoop Doggy Notes (SD Notes for short, or just Doggy Notes).

i love treeview organized hierarchical notes.. but maybe just to be different you could think up some alternative organization that would make it unique.

hehehe -
be careful - there are so many note taking apps out there, and it's easy to go insane making one.
i've been warned myself by members here about do i really want to embark on such a project (regarding clipboard helps+spell and making a new version of it..)

see the letter by the author of keynote on him burning out from working on the never finished keynote2 idea in another thread as well..

but it's very tempting i must admit.  for a programmer it's a fun project.
the best advice given to me if you are determined to work on it is to check out keynote2 discussions for ideas.  though i guess my first advice would be, are you sure there isn't another project you might want to work on that doesn't have so much good competition..

works great here!!
yes i got same error on first use and not after that.

One thing - its set to update the RSS feed every 100 seconds - that's really pretty high and could be a drain on the server if everyone leaves it at that.  can i suggest that future versions set default poll rate to once every 5 or 15 minutes?

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: First discoveries/Customizations

ill try to answer in pieces.

one easy way to do #3 is that any clip marked as a "favorite" will show up in the quick paste menu, so that's an easy way to  have your favorites in the quick menu paste.

i think a) points out that i really need to save options after they have been modified rather than on shutdown, for the reasons you say.

can you describe 1 more?

i think insane is a good description.

i mean if you want to stop giving updates after 6 months, ok whatever, not cool but im not going to call you insane.
but to say that after 6 months you have to stop using a local drawing program unless you pay a license renewal fee, that's just wrong.
