Living Room / Kickstarter has a problem... the Solution
« Last post by wraith808 on December 16, 2015, 04:32 PM »
Kickstarter has a problem.  Even with all of the successful projects, it's becoming known more for its outlying failures (which of course, can happen to anyone) rather than its outlying successes.  What can you do about it, without putting undue strictures on the creators or turning Kickstarter into something it's not?  An independent analysis of the numbers seems a good way to start.

The Kickstarter Fulfillment Report - An independent analysis by the University of Pennsylvania.

In March 2015, we invited a scholar from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania to help answer this question. Professor Ethan Mollick is an expert in entrepreneurship and innovation who developed an independent study surveying nearly 500,000 backers about project outcomes and backer sentiment.

Note, that they don't say anything about the funding of the project.  That would be more transparent- whether invited meant solicited and funded.  Not that I think it's a salient point, but it will be to some people.  All sorts of groups give grants to study particular things that might be of use to the funding group.

There is, however this tidbit, that might stave off the naysayers:

“Kickstarter collaborated on data gathering, but these results are independent and solely my own work. I was not paid by Kickstarter, and all analyses were conducted independently of Kickstarter. Kickstarter was offered the chance to comment on, but not change, this paper before it was made public. For the backer data, Kickstarter conducted the survey using questions jointly developed with me, but shared all relevant non- private data. For the survey of project creators, the survey was conducted by me alone, and responses were not shared with Kickstarter. All errors and omissions are mine.”

Emphasis mine.  But the next question is- how were you funded?  Which is not answered.

What is important is the next paragraph:

This is the largest study to ever examine the Kickstarter community. We had no influence over its findings. Before research began, Wharton and Kickstarter agreed that we would co-publish the results, whatever was found.

But for some, that will get lost in the question of who funded it, which is a shame.

I'll summarize the points for those who don't want to read.

  • 9% of Kickstarter projects fail to deliver rewards
  • Failure rates are consistent across categories
  • Projects that raise less than $1,000 fail the most often
  • There are good failures and bad failures

That last point refers to project satisfaction.

In the end, he says that each backer should allow for a 1-in-10 failure rate of projects backed.  I guess I'm just lucky- I consider only 3 of my 350+ projects to have failed.  Those have gone silent without delivering.  Many are late- very late in one case- but they're still communicating and progressing.  And one of those refunded 100% of my pledge, and gave a complimentary product.

I'm in it more for the process, though I only back things that are interesting to me.  I have a worse rate on IndieGoGo, which is the reason that I don't use it anymore.  It seems more wild west than Kickstarter.

But back to the report - it's an interesting read, with interesting methodology- especially for the last point.  I do like that they include it, however.

I'm still at a standstill.  Got a needle, but I can't get the power on.  Might order a dock... but they're backordered.

I guess I should be glad I forgot to order the dock then, given the problems that have been had with the power switch.

Less than impressed with their response to the power switch fiasco.  They did accept responsibility, which is good.  But they're trying their damnedest not to take responsibility for a solution to their existing base.  Some people can get them on... and that's fine.  But there's literally nothing left in the slot for me to move with a needle.  Their last response was send us a close-up picture and we'll try to see what you're working with and how to use the needle.

so basically I'm just going to have to slog my way through it - luckily it's only small (4.5K records)

RegEx could really help with this- other than the street address.  Also, remember it doesn't have to be either/or.  You can use a programmatic method to narrow it down to possible matches that you have to look at, and do that part manually.

And I think that's exactly what 4wd said above, but I'm going to post this anyway because maybe I'm wrong.  :-[

there are different considerations when you have a localized area for the addresses vs. international and local, so I was clarifying if the information was international or not.

Don't know myself.  The easiest thing to do would be to take your primary license, see where the inherent incompatibilities lie, then research the others.  For example, if you using MS-Pl it's a copyleft license, so you look for licenses that are not compatible with copyleft.  That is still not comprehensive, but it's a sanity preserving approach.

If you haven't heard of the Nicolas Brothers, you're in for a treat!  With none other than Gregory Hines and Maurice Hines narrating- and saying how much above them the Nicolas Brothers' skill was- and that's saying something!  A dance number that Fred Astaire himself once said was the best ever put in a movie- and this was after Singing in the Rain.  It's AMAZING!

The number only, in better quality.

Impressive and Cute

That bias in this case can be summed up very well:

“Hi, I’m from the games industry. Governments, please regulate my more successful competitors.”

Always remember:

“The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools.”

both of these are valid viewpoints

with respect to the first, successful doesn't mean better (or even good), which is what I think was the nub of his complaint (I know nothing about star citizen, but the voice in my head was screaming duke nukem!!)

and with respect to the latter there's another quote about if you tell a lie for long enough it becomes the truth.  Seems to me that we could well be filling the world with fools, simply because all we're giving them is lies advertising

Just to add (didn't want to rant anymore than I already was), that the whole thing rang as disingenuous, when Star Citizen and f2p browser games are apples and oranges, and applying the same broad stroke to both is a recipe for the same type of regulation that we have today.

The tl;dr is that gamers are massively outgunned by marketing departments with bots and Big Data.

I might go for that, other than this line:

people need to be saved from themselves.

Bullshit.  Just because one side is bad, doesn't mean the other side is worse.

An article that might seem to lean towards the way of the writer:

http://toucharcade.c...ee-to-play-producer/

It is bad.  In fact, it's arguably worse than what he says in the article.  But adults don't need to be saved from themselves.  No matter the reasoning.  It's not a slippery slope.  It's an express elevator funded by your tax dollars.

"Where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?"

I follow Cliffski, and have bought his games, and do enjoy his articles.  But he's a bit vitriolic at times, and definitely has his own agenda.  And even worse, he subscribes to his agenda with one hand, while bashing the system with the other.

http://positech.co.u...ove-on-or-they-fail/

http://positech.co.u...-ethical-capitalism/

http://positech.co.u...ie-apocalypse-maybe/

He's a good writer, and very well-spoken.  I like his game.  But I also realize he has biases, and they show... but he doesn't really acknowledge it.  So I take the good, and bin the bad in his conversation, passing them through the lens of known bias.

But really, if I didn't hammer it home enough: Don't ask the government for anything for me, or for the "greater good".  You'll get a new form of evil in response.

That bias in this case can be summed up very well:

“Hi, I’m from the games industry. Governments, please regulate my more successful competitors.”

Always remember:

“The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools.”

If 4.5.2 is getting security updates, then since 4.0 "support" is included with it...I'd have to think it would also get updated in the process. Okay sure, Microsoft can tend to be a big bag of dicks...but do you really think they'd push it to only updating half of an existing package?

That's just it.  If 4.0 support was just included and it just worked out of the box, I'd agree with you.  But it is only pre-supposed to be working.  They haven't tested everything- that's pretty evident from the post, and pretty self-evident as they can't test every bit of code out there.

Are there any breaking changes in .NET 4.5.2? Why do you include these changes?

There are a very small number of changes in .NET 4.5.2 that are not fully compatible with earlier .NET versions. We include these changes only when absolutely necessary in the interests of security, in order to comply with industry wide standards, or in order to correct a previous incompatibility within .NET. Additionally, there are a small number of changes included in .NET 4.5.2 that will only be enabled if you choose to recompile your application against .NET 4.5.2.

They're trying best-effort, and they're trying to minimize the perceived impact...

... but tell that to the boss when you're in the whatever percentage.

Check these two links:

https://msdn.microso...58358(v=vs.110).aspx

https://msdn.microso...61502(v=vs.110).aspx

Now, admittedly, most of this you can get around.  But you have to get around it.  Just letting MS autotarget?  That's a recipe for failure for someone.  And that someone may be you.

"As previously announced, starting January 12, 2016 Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, technical support or hotfixes for .NET 4, 4.5, and 4.5.1 frameworks. All other framework versions, including 3.5, 4.5.2, 4.6 and 4.6.1, will be supported for the duration of their established lifecycle. The decision to end support for these versions will allow us to invest more resources towards improvements of the .NET Framework."

All of this wraps into some weirdness with my AdiIRC client new version, so I gotta keep my eye on this thread!

I expect I'll have to ask for tips in a lil' bit, I just don't have my grasp together on this yet what to ask.

There is nothing you can do.  Side-by-Side configuration just lets you run different versions.  In our case at work, we have a legacy platform that we couldn't upgrade at the time, but a new platform that had to use assemblies for the older update.  The Side-by-Side that Stoic linked to does exactly what it says.  Allows you to run versions side-by-side, or in parallel.  Even when configured, if your app targets the older version- it will use the older version.  Things that target the newer version, use the newer.  It does, however, let you specify versions of the framework that your application is compatible with.  But, back to the article that Stoic linked- there's a minor blurb there, that shows what I am concerned about:

In practice, this compatibility can be broken by seemingly inconsequential changes in the .NET Framework and changes in programming techniques.

The only thing you can do is request that the makers of AdiIRC recompile it for 4.5.2 or 4.6.

And to further cloud the issue, I want to point out the verbiage they use and what it implies to me.

"All other framework versions, including 3.5, 4.5.2, 4.6 and 4.6.1, will be supported for the duration of their established lifecycle."

Why those versions?  And how much savings in resources will that mean?  It just doesn't add up.  Why break the lifecycle rules now?  But in any case, this was just a PSA, as I'd not seen talk about it anywhere, and missed the original announcement, and thought others might have also.
3291
You can implement side by side compatibility- and we've had to do that.  But it's something you have to do.  And it doesn't work for C++ libraries that you might be linking to that do not link to the correct .NET framework version.  And there are changes between .NET versions.  I know because I've had to go through this before, and the behaviour of initialization of certain complex types changed between major versions.  And then there's the idea of third-party libraries you can't just recompile.  I've had that problem too.  And you can tell what .net framework things are compiled for, so even if you were to have your theoretical call, and they started to help you... once you got down to it and they say what it was compiled for, you'd be out of luck.   But what I'm really talking about is security problems that they will now now release patches for.

It's not a simple issue, and it's not necessarily a simple fix either.
3292
Why would they need to support 4.0 directly? 4.5.1 gets upgraded to 4.5.2, and 4.5.2 includes 4.0 just like 3.5 includes 3.0 and 2.0. So they're not really orphaning it, their just bundling it in with the latest version to limit the number of updates that need to be futzed with.

[ Invalid Attachment ]

Because of software and development.  If you target 4.0 in your applications, then you are using an unsupported version.  Much of our infrastructure in the company I work for is using 4.0.  Most of the software I have linked from the site also uses 4.0.  Unless I recompile it for 4.5 and re-release, it's unsupported.  Even if the assemblies for the versions are in the same place, they are not the same version, as you can see by the linked assemblies a build is targeting.
3293
You can actually disable it if you don't use the windows store with no adverse effects.  What you should really do if you're interested is use ProcessMonitor to see what is actually causing it.  It's a broker as it implies, so it's doing this on behalf of another process.

I don't know how I missed this!

A little over a year ago Microsoft announced that they were open sourcing large parts of the .NET framework. At the time Scott Hanselman did a nice analysis of the source, using Microsoft Power BI. Inspired by this and now that a year has passed, I wanted to try and answer the question:

How much Community involvement has there been since Microsoft open sourced large parts of the .NET framework?

Interesting Read!

You don't have to do that.  Just restart SCC after saying no to capture all of my screens to OneDrive when it first asks you, and it registers again.  I was going to post something about it... fuming at the time  >:(.  But once I figured out that restarting SCC worked, I felt stupid, so didn't.  :-[

You can keep your own domain but host your (zipped) executable(s) on GitHub? Either directly in your repo or better yet as releases, let them foot the bill for the downloads :-)

Thanks for the suggestion.

That's actually a *really* good suggestion!
