Thanks app103, very kind of you. I personally have no problem with those fonts but I remember having read (or been told) about people that missed them; hopefully they find the links above and solve the issue.

Win95/98 allows for a compact install, intended for systems with very small hard drives. It's just the bare minimum needed and a number of things are not installed. One of those things is the Wingdings fonts.

The official recommended fix from MS is to reinstall your OS and select full install instead, but that isn't possible if your hard drive is too small to support it.

Other fixes are much more complicated than they need to be, like extracting the fonts from the cabs on your setup disk. Easiest one is the suggested "copy the fonts from another computer", but if you don't have access to that, you'll need to get the fonts from somewhere else.

Too bad, could've solved issues with missing Wingding (Webding?) fonts on certain machines. Oh well... *sigh*

If you are missing Webdings, you can get it from here.

If you are missing Wingdings, all 3 of them can be found here.

Much easier than reinstalling IE, your OS, or extracting them from cabs on your install disk to get them back, and better than just suffering without.

Living Room / ScreenCastle: One-click screencasting right from your browser
« Last post by app103 on June 09, 2009, 08:54 PM »
ScreenCastle is a free service that allows you to record screencasts directly from your browser. Just click the big red button and start recording. When you are finished, they give you a number of URL's and codes to embed the video or thumbnails into your website, blog & forum posts, links for email, etc.

Yes, that's right, they even host it for you, for free.

All you need to get started is a Java enabled browser and something you want to make a screencast of.

And for developers, there is an API.

Living Room / Lovely Charts: Free Online Diagramming Software
« Last post by app103 on June 09, 2009, 07:37 PM »
Diagrams are great, because they are a very simple and extremely efficient way to intelligibly represent even the most complex ideas.
But drawing diagrams can also be very complicated, simply because most diagramming software require you to draw.
Lovely Charts' motto is "You think, we draw!"

Diagrams are made to communicate. Every single symbol available in Lovely Charts has been crafted with love, to enable you to create great looking diagrams that will impress, convince and seduce - even if you don't have the slightest design skill.

With Lovely Charts' extremely simple and intuitive drag'n drop drawing mechanism, you'll be able to focus on what really matters. You won't have to draw boxes or arrows, and you won't have to worry about what symbol to use.

THAT is adorable!  :-*

I can only hope whatever I make will look half as good.

wonder could anyone knit one . .  :)

My original thought was to crochet one, but without a decent pattern, all I can make is cats and pigs. And the amount of time it would take to do one wouldn't make it practical to "mass produce" them in a large enough quantity to make them available for anyone that wanted one.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Feature request: a real Start button?
« Last post by app103 on June 05, 2009, 09:02 PM »
i should clarify -- i didn't mean to emulate the look per se, i just meant to recontruct the various submenus and items.

Not what I meant, since you could never include what you don't know someone has that's non-standard.

but you raise a different idea -- if it would be possible to pop up the normal Start Menu, but at a specific location on screen (and maybe force to Classic mode?).. anyone have any idea of a way to do this?

That is a lot more like what I meant. I'll see if the lazy coder that came up with the idea has any ideas on how to do it and pass on the info if he does.

General Software Discussion / Re: Sticky Notes - Freeware Roundup
« Last post by app103 on June 05, 2009, 09:19 AM »
There is an older freeware version of 3M's Post-it Digital Notes (Post-it Software Notes Lite). The major differences is that you can't create memoboards with it (I think it has only 1 default board), I think you are limited to only yellow notes, and it is most likely not Vista compatible. (it is 9x compatible, however)

Some others I found while looking for a URL for that free version:

shareware:

Yellow Memo $29.95
http://www.yellowmemo.com/

Screen Notes $14.95 (older freeware version also available)
http://romexoft.com/screennotes.shtml

CS Desktop Notes $12.00
http://chissoft.com/desknote/

ndxCards $49.00 - $89.00
This one mimics 4x6 index cards, rather than sticky notes. Target user seems to be a bit more along the lines of lawyers, writers, businesses, and those that would use it to organize research info for writing academic papers (has features like outlining and automatic citation formatting)
http://www.ndxcards.com/features.asp

dtNotes $19.95
http://www.dtbits.com/

BrainStreamer $89.00
This one is a cross between sticky notes and mind mapping, and you can copy Excel tables to notes.
http://www.brainstreamer.com

StickyNote $19.95 $29.95
Site says one price, and buy one get one free, but order form has a higher price for a 2 user license. (that's the cheapest they offer)

free:

Sticky Notes

Portable Sticky Note Software
http://www.picofacto...oftware/sticky-note/

Note Mania
This one has some unusual features. You can subscribe to RSS feeds with it and the headlines will be converted into notes. It also supports a variety of linking options, allowing you to not only link to web pages and email addresses, you can also link to other notes, files, folders, and launch executables with optional command line parameters.

There is a delay. I am in the process of moving all my notes to another application, and that is going to take a little while, since I have 100's of them, and they have to be copied over manually, one at a time, and organized in the new software.

I am going to concentrate on that first, since I really don't want to put that task on my todo list of doom.
3290
I have had similar problems in the past, but usually only with stuff I have copied & pasted from a web page into Notepad2, saved, and later tried to open in Windows Notepad. All the line breaks get converted into little squares and it's all on a single line, although if opened in Notepad2 it looks normal. (this doesn't happen all the time, though)

You could try my Lacuna Launcher.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Feature request: a real Start button?
« Last post by app103 on June 04, 2009, 09:31 PM »
I am not sure if you understood what I was saying.

I was making a feature request for mouser's Launchbar Commander. It would be perfect for this, if it had the start button, as described.

The application you linked to does nothing more than simulate a click (or hitting the windows key) to the existing start menu on the real taskbar. It does not open the menu from where the shortcut is on a different toolbar.

If the button is clicked on a toolbar located at the top of the screen, it shouldn't open something on a different toolbar located at the bottom.

Mouser has a "Start Menu" button in LBC, but it only shows the contents of the programs folder. It doesn't show the whole start menu.

Living Room / Re: Where did your DC user I.D come from?
« Last post by app103 on June 03, 2009, 10:46 PM »
My real name is April. For whatever reason people have always felt the need to shorten this to something that sounded rather insulting and made me the victim of a lot of malicious teasing when I was a kid. (ape)

When I was 14, a friend of mine, not wanting to be insulting, decided to be a little different, changed the vowel sound, and started calling me App, instead. And it caught on and just stuck.

The 103 was added because I was using WinMX and all usernames have to end in a 3 digit number and I wasn't feeling especially creative that day. Those that know me well enough, know what it means.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: NoteZilla
« Last post by app103 on June 03, 2009, 12:35 PM »
Ack! You beat me to it. I was working on a review for this, too.

This is a great application with a lot of power.

One of the uses I have used sticky note memoboards for is project planning, and NoteZilla's tree style memoboards is superior to the 12 tab single-level limit imposed by a similar application I used to use. Notezilla's memoboards can have sub-boards, which can have sub-boards!  :-*

Scheduling of alarms show when an item is overdue, and by how much. Great anti-procrastination feature.

You can also set a due date but schedule the alarm to ring before it, giving you enough time to make sure you don't miss it or end up late. So for example, you can set a due date on a birthday reminder to be the actual birthday date, but tell it to remind you a week or 2 in advance, so you have enough time to buy a gift or mail a card.

Being able to stick notes to web pages, without the need of supporting specific browsers through the use of plugins is fantastic. Some sticky notes applications only support IE, or require an extension in Firefox, and no support for other browsers like K-meleon, Chrome, Opera, or Safari. NoteZilla supports them all, without plugins.

The only issue with it is that if you stick a note to a page in one browser, it will not pop up when you visit that same page in another browser, but if you stick to a single browser, that wouldn't be much of an issue unless you decide to make a switch to something else. I am using this to stick notes to profiles on social networking sites, to remind me who people are, why I am following them, and anything else I might want to remember about them.

Searching notes is fast, and it is quite easy to filter by tags if you use Advanced Find:

SNAG-00391.png

And the greatest feature, and the primary reason why I switched applications: It has options to export your entire database in a non-proprietary format! (choices: tab delimited txt for importing to Excel & Outlook, HTML, each note to a seperate txt file, or a NoteZilla db)

As far as bugs and annoyances, there were a few I found that you didn't mention.

taskbar button flashing on alarms- I would love to see an option to turn that off. It makes my large hidden taskbar fly out halfway across my screen, covering whatever I am doing.

z-order foul up - When the alarm window pops up, it messes up the ability for application windows that are supposed to always be on top to have the ability to do so, until you dismiss the alarm and click the windows affected. This affects a number of things on my desktop, including my taskbar, Launchbar Commander, my clock, Trout minibar, Messenger Plus desktop contact buttons, etc. It's a real pain to have to minimize windows to find and click everything affected every time an alarm rings.

But all in all it's a great application and I am quite pleased wth it.

And if you would like to give it a try, there is a generous 30% discount for DC members.

And yes, I too have noticed that your AOL issue has gone unresolved despite at least 2 other reports coming in about it. Jeff claims "I do not have an AOL account so I cannot verify". At least that was the answer I got when I tried troubleshooting with him. Pretty poor excuse. They have released debug builds for people to test and find bugs on in the past, I do not understand why they didn't for this one.

AOL accounts are now free, and you don't even need one to run the software now (only need it to access certain features, like email). And if you have an AIM screen name it can be used in AOL's software, too, accessing aim.com email through it, so now there are 2 options for the same thing. So there should be no trouble getting access to the ads on the email window, which was my original complaint.

I seriously doubt that he can't verify. It might have been a problem way back when I first reported it, but that isn't the case today. Plus, I gave you access to that screen name on my AOL account to help him and I would have let him use it too, if it would have helped, so his excuses are pretty lame and carry no weight. (I'd still be willing to let him borrow one of my screen names if he's too lazy to get one of his own, if I thought it would help.)

But if they add the gzip support that should take care of the problem, any way.

And I sure hope they do, because the freeware TPA Ad Buster plugin is not an option for most AOL users today. It doesn't work with latest version of AOL, it's not Vista compatible, plus it's unsupported, buggy, and frequently crashes. Not to mention that it's pretty hard to find on the TPA site, ever since AOL threatened to stop working with them and allowing them access to information to develop other shareware plugins that are the TPA company's bread & butter. They were supposed to remove it from their site completely, but instead just removed all links to it from other pages. (Sneaky, but it made AOL shut up.) But TPA did keep the part of the deal with AOL that they wouldn't develop it any further, which is why the plugin is in the horrible state that it's in.

AdMuncher is not perfect and I read above someone is leaving it behind for something else, but what? I've yet to find anything that does what AdMuncher will do for every program you have installed. Most adblockers restrict themselves to working with web browsers. If there are any true alternatives to AdMuncher I'd love to hear them.

That's why I am still using it. I don't want to have to install & run a gazillion ad blockers that are application specific (and for some applications they don't even exist)

For IE, you can use Trixie and a Greasemonkey script (you may have to try a few till you find one that works well with Trixie)

I have not tried Trixie, as I don't normally use IE, but I have read quite a few reviews that have called it the best available plugin for adding Greasemonkey functionality to IE.

Ghacks article about it from last year: http://www.ghacks.ne...n-internet-explorer/

GiveAwayOfTheDay is an extended trial, that lasts only until something messes up the install, such as you uninstalling, deleting (by accident or on purpose) or formatting your PC.

The goal is to get you to try different applications, long enough that when something like that does happen, you will be more likely to buy the application.

So, if you really do like it, download the trial and install it, and before the trial period is up, buy it.
3298
Josh, if you remember back to the AOL ad problem I reported, and even graciously allowed access to one of my screen names for investigation (that's more trust than most people would have), gzip support was promised in the "next version" to take care of the issue, which never happened. (we are using that next version now, and I am not referring to the beta)

Hopefully they aren't making more promises they don't plan to keep.

I was thinking about making a similar page showing First Posts.. so it would list all posts which were the first posts of someone, sorted by date.. Thoughts?

And at the very end of the list would be this one? Cool!  ;D

Well, I have Tab Mix Plus (a great little add-on, customizable in every aspect) and I found myself being drug into a debate on Firefox themes by a friend of mine - it went from a small IM battle to a full-scale "this theme is better than yours" and in the process I actually found several very nice themes that I installed, putting each one in it's own new tab as I went browsing...

The result? (Non-trimmed version here: ImageShack) (see attachment in previous post)
I think I've hit the limit of "tabbed browsing" as-is :P
-wreckedcarzz (May 31, 2009, 09:25 PM)

I prefer a combination of ColorfulTabs and Tab Kit (I don't like the coloring in this one and prefer the previous extension for that)

SNAG-00387.png

Incidentally, Tab Kit can also give you a tree instead of tabs, but I use it primarily to have multiple tab rows with a scrollbar to keep it from taking over my whole browser window
