General Software Discussion / MAME arcade emulator on your ipod(!)

Here is a port of MAME for the ipod. Note that this will only work on the 5G ipod, unless you put another LCD driver in, so feel free to do so. I WILL NO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR THIS. If you can't figure it out, you're on your own. I wrote this becuase I wanted to play pacman on my 5G, so it worked out.

very very cool.

for those of you who dont know what MAME is, it's a well established free video game emulator that can emulate thousands of classic arcade and console video games.  really one of the gems of software development that helped usher in the era of emulators: http://www.mame.net/

Living Room / Article: The Coming Search Advertising Crash
« Last post by mouser on March 09, 2006, 07:10 PM »
http://publishing2.c...h-advertising-crash/

I’m not sure if I’ll be the first to predict it, but search advertising is headed for a cliff. I can’t say with any certainty when–or whether–the crash will come, but the evidence is mounting.

Everyone is talking about the $90 million click fraud settlement, and the Google apologists are out in force, arguing that $90 million is a drop in the bucket and that the settlement reduces the likelihood of major legal liabilities in the future. I’m not a lawyer, so they may very well be right that Google is in good shape from a legal perspective. Of course, you can count on Google bear Henry Blodget to find a way to rag on Google, but even he’s missing the big problem here.

The issue is not whether advertisers can sue Google for any significant amount of money. The issue is whether advertisers will begin to lose faith in search advertising.

interesting read.

O.K., if you are reading this blog chances are you’ve in one way or another heard about the “Microsoft mystery” project named Origami. You probably also know by now that Origami was the Microsoft code name for the Ultra-Mobile PC project.

...
I was a primary driver of the buzz campaign, I thought I’d set the record straight by using a timeline to illustrate how events unfolded.
...
Origami Project Timeline
Dec 05 – My team and I have an idea about doing a buzz/viral campaign to get enthusiasts interested in what we’re announcing at CeBIT. I pitch the idea to Michael, our marketing guy, and he agrees it’s a good idea so he and I start planning it.
Jan 06 – We hired a creative agency to begin work on the viral campaign. We tell them to leave it vague and open to speculation to generate interest.
...

all companies seem to do this these days.. am i the only person who finds this stuff depressing?

General Software Discussion / be careful downloading free screensavers

The Bad News: Why You Should Never Download Free Screensavers for Windows

Free Waterfall Screen Saver!! Free Wallpaper!! Free Smileys!! 10,000 High-Quality screensavers!! Sports, Nature, Animals, and More!!

Have you ever seen advertisements like the above? Don’t be fooled. A huge number of these “free” screensavers, wallpapers, cursors, etc., contain spyware -- actually, virtually 100% of them contain spyware. There are many very sad stories of people who downloaded a cute goldfish screensaver and got their Favorites/Bookmarks filled up with pornography sites(here), or who had a new employee who downloaded a screensaver which then killed access to the internet and the office network (here).

So, do not download free screensavers! It’s just not worth it. Do not download wallpapers, themes, cursors, smilies, or anything of the sort, either. Just don’t ever download anything from an advertisement. This may seem like a strict and no-fun policy, but if you disregard it, you have a good chance of winding up very, very sorry.

The Good News: Rare Exceptions To The Rule

But what if you really want a cool screensaver? Screensavers can be a lot of fun. Aren’t there any good ones? Well, yes, but they're few and far between. So, I have scoured the internet to find those rare gems for any Visionary Customers who may enjoy screensavers. Here are a lot of clean, safe screensavers that don’t contain spyware (as of April 2005):

Living Room / outbreak - fun browser based oldschool style roleplaying game
« Last post by mouser on March 09, 2006, 06:39 PM »
Outbreak is a free browser-based cooperative multiplayer game in which you play the role of a mercenary hired to kill the demons that infest various cities. Outbreak is not turn-based, and does not use action points or other play time limits. Outbreak does not use any sounds, Java, Flash, or Shockwave. You do not need to download anything to play it in your web browser.

looks fun!

Living Room / Discussions about micropayments
« Last post by mouser on March 09, 2006, 06:34 PM »
nice article from 2000:
http://www.openp2p.c...9/micropayments.html

Micropayments are back, at least in theory, thanks to P2P. Micropayments are an idea with a long history and a disputed definition - as the W3C micropayment working group puts it, " ... there is no clear definition of a 'Web micropayment' that encompasses all systems," but in its broadest definition, the word micropayment refers to "low-value electronic financial transactions."

...

Micropayment systems have not failed because of poor implementation; they have failed because they are a bad idea. Furthermore, since their weakness is systemic, they will continue to fail in the future.

...

editorial note: this is a nice article but i believe something like micropayments will eventually come and be a huge benefit to independent writers on the internet.. still waiting for it to be done properly though.

UrlSnooper / Re: URL Helper
« Last post by mouser on March 09, 2006, 06:10 PM »
if you think that's cheekly:
url helper is based so closely on url snooper that at first i thought they had simply taken my code and changed the appearance.
it does appear to be an independent program, but one that was built explicitly by copying url snooper.

they actually stole the text for their website directly from the url snooper help file (!!!!) - word for word.

at first i was mad but then i figured eh, what's the point of getting upset about it.  i just feel bad for people who buy it unknowingly.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Num Lock
« Last post by mouser on March 09, 2006, 06:04 PM »
maybe you have the following box checked?
i think what you want is to uncheck it, which will let you type numbers when numlock is on.  works for me.  if it doesn't work for you, do you have a non-english keyboard maybe?

the option lets you choose between whether to use the numpad to either launch results by # or type numbers when numlock is on:
np.png

that should do what you want.  however it occurs to me that another option might be desired, which is to always act like numlock is on, even when it isn't; i think i will add that next.

« Last post by mouser on March 09, 2006, 11:38 AM »
im still unclear about this - i did add as per our discussions, the ability to use the numpad keys.
but the numpad keys can operate in two mode according to whether nulock is on or off.

when it is off the keys act like arrows moving the cusor.

so could you be more specific about how you want the numpad to behave in both of these modes?

Living Room / Updating the forum software to 1.1RC2
« Last post by mouser on March 08, 2006, 06:54 PM »
I've been updating the forum software - it's been several days of non-stop work due to all of the customizations we have written since we started, and because of the large changes in the SMF software with their latest release.  But they are some good changes that will help us out in the future.

Anyway, I've been working on a test mirror installation so that i can test it all before i install the upgrade onto this main forum, but i'll be updating this forum in the next few days.

I thought while i was at it this would be a good time to open the floor to any requests for features to add to the forum - now is as good a time as ever to request features.

i've actually been working on pt a little on the side while i've been coding other programs but i don't have a date estimate yet; i'll post an update by the end of march.  there will no doubt be a minor update or two by then, so if you have feature requests please post them.

actually josh already seems to have contacted them and gotten them to offer a good discount i think :)
but emailing them again and letting them know it's desired can only help!
stay tuned for details :)

Find And Run Robot / Re: FaRR running slowly?
« Last post by mouser on March 08, 2006, 06:47 PM »
ohhhh...

one quick clarification - does this delay only happen the first time you bring up farr after a long time of non-use? or if you bring it up and close it 10 times right after one another is it still slow.

if it's only the first time, then this kind of falls into the "it's a feature not a bug" thing, but i've been meaning to make it an option.
after farr is minimized for a long time it gives up its memory to windows so that it uses almost no real memory.  as a result it can be a bit slow to come back to life after it's been minimized for a long time.
i can add an option to not give up memory so easily.

if it's always slow to come up then it is probably the networked recent files thing.

Find And Run Robot / Re: License Key is Invalid
« Last post by mouser on March 08, 2006, 06:43 PM »
i apologize for the trouble -someone else just reported a similar bug to me yesterday..  what program are you using?  did you use the installer to install it? is the program in some location that might be causing the confusion?  I will have to add a message reporting where it is trying to save the file so that we can identify the problem.

once you tell me which program this is i can tell you how to set the license key manually using a file, and i will make an improved version which may help us know what the problem is.  feel free to email me directly for more help ([email protected]).
