Their prices are not too low, so I hope "we" can get a discount
for the new Emsisoft Online Armor version 5:

Emsisoft Online Armor Firewall 5.0 available!
Emsisoft Online Armor Firewall 5.0

A Firewall keeps a constant eye on the data traffic of your computer and only allows Internet and local network connections for authorized programs and processes. In recent years, Emsisoft Online Armor has made a name for itself as a comprehensive security solution that is also easy to understand and operate for those who are not computer experts.

This Firewall not only protects the user against attacks from the Internet but also allows permanent monitoring of suspicious system-internal processes. Online Armor is therefore also a full-featured HIPS (Host Intrusion Protection System), in other words a type of Firewall for internal operating system processes.

Emsisoft Online Armor is available in three versions:

    * Online Armor Free

Can be used by home users completely free of charge. The program provides a strong Firewall and comprehensive Web protection. The Freeware version also detects Keyloggers and offers several protection routines to protect the Firewall itself from manipulation.

    * Online Armor Premium - US $40 in the first year, then at a lower cost for renewals

Additionally the Premium version includes access to product support, access to Advanced Mode features, File and Registry protection, DNS-Spoofing protection, automatic updates and the especially important Online-Banking mode that prevents undesirable manipulation of internet banking operations.

    * Online Armor ++ - US $60 in the first year, then at a lower cost for renewals

Also provides an award winning dual scan engine Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner and a Rootkit Scanner.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: TELL me how many objects I am deleting!
« Last post by Curt on April 11, 2011, 02:13 AM »
-sorry, I wasn't really polite at all; but your reply is polite.

I download maybe a hundred files a day, pictures, music files, articles, and programs. In order to keep oversight, I am used to delete right away, once a file is redundant. In these situations there are no backup to rely on; the files were still in the Downloads folder. Of course I use Delete, if I am messing with important stuff (edited: if the file is not too big), but sometimes (quite often) I think: "I am never going to want to keep this file", so I use Shift+Delete. This is where I was supposed to look at Windows' pop-up box and read "Do you really want to...", to see what and how much I am about to delete, but evidently I didn't read it. So, maybe if I hear it...

-yes, nice one, Miles :-)

I don't know why some people want to decide if I should use Shift+Delete or not  [beep!][/beep!].  If you Delete a 10GB file, Windows will use a really long time to delete it. If you Shift+Delete the same file, it will be gone within a second. Other than that, I don't need to delete 45 files very often, but I need on a daily base to remove a few files, quite often one by one. This was my polite answer.

General Software Discussion / Re: SOLVED: get back my "Open with..."?
« Last post by Curt on April 11, 2011, 12:47 AM »
-yes, it is terrific, but maybe a little overwhelming, when looking at 296 items... :-[

I use CFi ShellToys, which include the pictured bottom line, "Rarely Used..."

This is for a text file:

CFi2011-04-11.gif

This solution has turned out to be more trustworthy, because it doesn't alter or remove any keys, things are either 1) on display, 2) rarely used, or 3) hidden (edited: nothing is hidden in my setup).

Coding Snacks / Re: Changing a folder's name text colour
« Last post by Curt on April 10, 2011, 02:28 PM »
I know Iconoid can do it on the desktop, because I did it on my Win 2000, but I don't remember if it also can do it with "normal" folders, or even if it can do it on XP: "Select any color for icon text": http://www.sillysot.com/

Edited:
I also used Customize Folder Shell Extension from http://www.clonesoft...shellicons/index.htm
- will change color of the folder's text.

Regarding folders, it might be a lot easier today to use FolderMarker Pro.

I haven't heard of anything that can change the colour for individual files.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: TELL me how many objects I am deleting!
« Last post by Curt on April 10, 2011, 01:00 PM »
Yesterday I downloaded a video course, size 10GB (TEN GIGAbytes). It was extremely tiring because the download speed was between 40 to 80 KILObytes per sec. Then removing a couple of old files, I failed to notice that the downloaded 10GB zip container also was marked. And Yes, I used Shift+Delete = Totally Gone!

We know it, at least from giveawayoftheday and support fora, people forget to READ, before clicking. Me too. So my idea is to have a program say out loud the number of objects I am about to delete, when Windows' pop-up box is asking me if I am sure I want to delete these objects. TELL me "three", so I get one extra chance to wake up in time!

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox: Why is svchost.exe and sqlite at war?

Does it list a process number for the scvhost.exe?

-no, PIDs are not listed. (I think I will ask Agnitum to do this.)

mahesh2k, I hope you will figure out what your problem with Firefox is about, so you don't have to use Revo Uninstalller (or similar) to remove ALL of Firefox - but it might be necessary.

General Software Discussion / Firefox: Why is svchost.exe and sqlite at war?
« Last post by Curt on April 09, 2011, 09:42 PM »
I had a look inside my Outpost Security Suite Pro 7.1's log,
and realized that a war is going on!     :o

Page up and down the Event Viewer has this one incident every few seconds:

svchost.exe
Access to protected application data is blocked
C:\Users\Curt\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\dxhgv8j7.default\signons.sqlite
-Application Guard

-meaning svchost.exe is blocked by Outpost from reaching this signons.sqlite (in Firefox 3.6).

What is that war about?
3262
For some reason I have never tested this one. How is it?  :tellme:

I have a copy of the free version running right now, but somehow I am not very tempted to try it out! I am not quite sure why I am reluctant, but I guess it has to do with the many "Buy Pro"-links. I don't mind the Pro's price, but I do mind the tactics.

I am not into regex, so for me the best argument for this tool would probably be the FbX similarity, and the (missing) text editing...

But how is it?

NB! It should be noted that the registry keys (on the above shown screenshots) still are exactly as they were before the fix, because the address for the proper key was quite different:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open With]
@="{09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open With EncryptionMenu]
@="{A470F8CF-A1E8-4f65-8335-227475AA5C46}"
-save as 'Restore OpenWith.reg'

Try following the instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/218805
Use Registry Editor to examine the file association key for unknown file types:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\openas\command
The "default" value for this key should read:
C:\%windir%\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1
-Microsoft Knowledge Base

my Vista reads:
%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1

I would guess it is the same? So the problem may have been caused elsewhere? Hmm...

Info:
There is also key with the name DelegateExecute. Its' value data:

{e44e9428-bdbc-4987-a099-40dc8fd255e7}

However, the one above is named openas and does not have any data defined. My guess would be that this could be the problem. But of course I have no idea what it maybe should read.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\

PROBLEM SOLVED   :)
--------------------

a crappy program removed all of my third party program's entries from my Vista's right-click context menu. I don't remember if my "Open with..." long ago was modified by a third-party program, (I am me, so I guess it was), but also "Open with..." has gone, from every file type that I have checked, and I have no idea how to get it back.

I really need to get back my "Open with..."! Please?  :tellme:

I used it once, carefully. I will never do that again! It doesn't matter if you are being careful or not: each and every third-party content will be removed from your context menu!! I am now re-installing en masse almost as if this was a new computer!

odd pricing for the extended edition, I think.

$20 is of course okay, but it only include updates for six months!
