Living Room / Re: Companies Caught Spamming our Forum with Fake Posts
« Last post by app103 on July 14, 2009, 11:14 AM »
That's precisely why I have been giving any links being spammed here a bad rating and review on WOT.

Any site with a red mark and the comment reads "forum spammer" has been guilty of spamming dc.

http://www.mywot.com...user/148822/comments

Users of the WOT plugin for IE & Firefox will see the site ratings of any site they visit, and sites with an especially poor rating will even be blocked, if you have the settings configured to enable that.

I don't feel that leaving the offending spam on the forum just so we can link to it serves a good purpose. You'd be better off just making a list, supporting claims with screenshots if you feel the need, and getting rid of the spam.

Hilarious, definitely NSFW, possibly not safe for home, too!

No human nudity in it...but...well...you have been warned!

BBspot has had some great fake news stories, usually with a tech/geek flavor. They also do product and movie "reviews".

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: OnScreen Display for Mute Status
« Last post by app103 on July 10, 2009, 10:24 PM »
Win+M and Win+D are very different. Win+M minimizes windows and Win+D changes the z-order of windows to place the desktop on top, giving the appearance that things have been minimized, when in fact they haven't. It can also mess things up for some applications that are supposed to always be on top, pushing them below the desktop. (This is why I never use it)

Win+M is the default Windows hotkey to minimize all windows.  :-\

kindrosker,

Version 1.0 of qdPM was released on May 24, 2009. Version 4.1 was released on July 8, 2009.

Do you realize that at your current rate of development that you will be on version 48.0 by this time next year, if you continue at this pace and with your current version numbering system?  :o
3260
Just so everyone knows, kindrosker is the developer of qdPM and not only is it free, it's open source.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/qdpm/

kindrosker, welcome to DonationCoder.

In the future, please don't be shy about letting people here know that you are the developer of an application. You will find it quite beneficial to you in the long run, if you do. We might have questions about it that only the developer could answer and knowing that you are, means that we can ask you.

If you withhold this information, we can't give you feedback, comments, suggestions, and ask questions that can help you to make your software better.

Don't be afraid of us. We are a very friendly, helpful community.

mouser announced this award in another thread today, and I am just supplying the graphics to make it possible.

16x16: sandwich16.gif

64x64: sandwich64.png

url: https://www.donation....msg170591#msg170591

one word label: sandwich

one line title: rotten turkey sandwich

description:

This is an award for catching and reporting mouser's mistakes.

i always try to put one mistake in each post i make to see who is pedantic enough to catch it and report it.
prize is a rotten turkey sandwich.
-mouser

Now, let's not all jump on this at once, since there are a ton of people that should have this one displayed on their profile. I don't want mouser to have to take the next 6 weeks off to add everyone.  :P

I've been a fan of tracked/loop music for some time, and have quite the collection of chiptunes/modules. I think the looping and uniformity of the Hero music was part of what made it so enjoyable.

I tried my hand at composition with a couple of the more popular trackers at the time and ended up just getting more and more embarrassed as time wore on. For nostalgic purposes, I dredged up my collection, here are my two best favorites.

Forgot to share one of my "guilty pleasures"....Bjørn Lynne, most famous for having composed the music for Worms Armageddon.

2 tracks available as free download on last.fm:

http://www.last.fm/m.../Methydias+Cloudship
http://www.last.fm/m...tenment+Through+Fear

He has a website that you might enjoy too, with midi files, free ringtone mp3's and some free 5.1 surround tracks. http://www.lynnemusic.com

After our discussion in the IRC channel, it seems we have similar tastes in music.

I have a few things that I have put together, without lyrics (I gave you a few of these links in the IRC channel):

If you ever hear anything with voices in this, just thumb it down to ban it: http://www.pandora.c...sh158340063934416871

I started this one with a friend on Last.fm that has similar taste to mine: http://www.last.fm/t...amn%20voices%20radio

and it has a free downloads RSS you can load in any podcast downloader, because I seeded it with a lot of freebies I discovered: http://ws.audioscrob...es+Radio/podcast.rss

And then there is the free download feed for the Rock Instrumentals genre at garageband.com: http://www.garageban...ock/podcast/totw.xml

Might also want to check out the genre of post-rock which contains a lot of instrumental stuff.

One particular net label that deals with a lot of post-rock and experimental music is Lost Children, which gives away full albums under a Creative Commons license. The archive.org links they provide have a player on the page so you can listen a bit before deciding if you want to download the album or you can just pick & choose the tracks you want instead of downloading the whole thing.

Some other stuff:

Some of Matti Paalanen's projects: Frozen Silence, Celestial Aeon Project, Project Divinity, Roomful of Emptiness, Warehouse of Distant Dreams (download links at the top of the pages gets you everything in one .zip file)

And a lot of stuff on the T-Sonic site. And one of the guys from T-Sonic (Loomeer) has some of his newer works on his own site.

Tryad is another one where you might find some good stuff.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: In Search of A Shutdown/Reboot/Hibernate App

The latest LBC release includes a nircmd tool button you can add.
Go to where you want to add it, and click to insert a node and choose last item in menu to insert from plugin/tool.  then choose nircmd tool.

Now your launchbar will have a nircmd submenu with options for shutting down, rebooting, hibernating, locking workstation, starting screensaver.

That should be an optional separate download, and come with a warning that your antivirus might not like it. Avira threw a fit and won't let me exclude it.

What makes it the must-have extension is that there's practically no other reason to highlight text on a Web page except to copy it to your clipboard.

Not entirely true. I do a lot of highlighting of excerpt text for sharing things on Friendfeed. When clicking the button for the bookmarklet, it automatically adds selected text to the comment field. I wouldn't want to have the clipboard text I planned on using for the title wiped out by an extension like that one.

Another reason for highlighting text is if you are using something like Surfulator. Or how about just for making it more visible if the contrast on the page is bad?
3266
This doesn't require any plugins and only uses CSS. And as far as performance, I have noticed that CSS site themes perform better in the usercontent.css file than when used in a greasemonkey script. (works faster without the annoying flash of the site's default theme)
3267
Well, not everyone will like this so those that do want it can have it and those that don't, won't have to.

And it might introduce more people to the idea of taking control of their internet experience and customizing sites to suit their own preferences.
3268
Amusing but true, here is a great productivity tip from the Onion:

According to a groundbreaking new study by the Department of Labor, working—the physical act of engaging in a productive job-related activity—may greatly increase the amount of work accomplished during the workday, especially when compared with the more common practices of wasting time and not working.

"Our findings are astounding: By simply sitting down and doing work, employees can dramatically increase their output of goods and services," said Deputy Undersecretary of Labor Charlotte Ponticelli, who authored the report. "In fact, 'working' may revolutionize the way people work."

Have you tried calling Adobe? If you have a licensed copy they should be able to supply it as either a CD or a download.
-Carol Haynes (June 17, 2009, 06:55 AM)

They are not going to do that for 10 year old software. In fact, it's more likely they will try to convince you to buy latest version rather than use something so old & outdated.

If yours is a CD version, your CD key may not work with the downloadable trial version.

And the CD version is much larger than the ones you have found.

Disk 1 is about 400mb
Disk 2 is about 300mb

Even PowerFolder relies on online storage to achieve its functions. The only difference is you are using their servers instead of your own FTP server or a webDAV-type account.

If that is the case, then why not a Dropbox shared folder? Anything dropped in the folder is automatically sent to everyone the folder is shared with (you have full control over who you share with). And anything deleted from the folder is automatically deleted from the folder on all the PC's the folder is shared with. (a backup remains in dropbox account, just in case you need to restore it, and you can delete the backups from your account, from their website). And there is versioning for files, too.

And it's cross platform (win/mac/*nix)

You can set it up with a single account shared with multiple PC's you control (just add another pc to your profile) and you'd have full access to any data stored in any of your dropbox subfolders. (good for syncing files between multiple locations)

Or multiple accounts (friends/coworkers) in which case you'd invite them to share the folder and that would be the only folder they could access your files from. (good for sharing files with other people)

And they start you off with 2G of storage for free. But if some one gives you a referral link, you get an extra 250mb (and they do too)

If you want to go that route, you can use my referral link: https://www.getdropb...eferrals/NTY4NDg1Mzk

I have to thank nudone for originally introducing me to this band with this video.

And if you want to see it in much better quality, and read about the story behind the video, go to the artist's website and download it.

Why not set up something like Xerver on each PC the files are located on (non-GUI mode is light as a feather), and disable access to the port you run it on in your router so it won't be accessible from the internet?

This is how I share a lot of stuff with my daughter.

She can just visit page hosted on my PC and take what she wants or needs.

Don't let the fact it's Java based deter you with thoughts that it will be all slow and bloated.

I have been using it for a long time, and even on my old 233mhz, 64mb ram Win9x machine, in non-GUI mode, I can't even tell it's running unless someone hits me up for a file. Even then, the only reason I know is because I can hear the disk activity (old noisy hd) and I take a hit on the available bandwidth on the 33.6k dialup it's using. But while it does lag the internet connection it doesn't lag my system at all.

Since you would be using it behind a router and not on the internet with really slow dialup, it's not too likely you'd take the same kind of bandwidth hit that I do on that machine. I certainly don't on the machines I have running it and connected to the router.
