Yeah. I took a look at the PDF as I don't have any Word tools.  The lady should take a crash class in Page Break.  At least do a Print Preview and see where to insert Page Breaks.

That's the easiest way to improve the look of output without really having to study the word processor.  My favorite is a stack of document and the last page just has " - NN - " (page number) on a line at the top.  Makes it seem as if nobody read the thing before deciding to publish it  :)

Point is that in the commandline users have to define exactly what, i.e. name of files, name of folders, should be securely deleted.
Meaning that the names of files/folders are 'fixed' in advance.
Whereas my idea is to select files/folders (can be anything) and that these files/folders are 'passed on' to ccleaner to be erased.
As said, currently one has to use 3rd party tools (fileshredders) having context menu support.
Well, anyway.. it was/is a suggestion only.
=

In the command line you use "%1" as placeholder for the file or folder that was right clicked.  There are many examples on the web.
3253
You add the command line you supplied to the context menu of Explorer using the tool.

I don't think you will find many programmers willing to write a knock off utility to delete and scrub files so that they cannot be undeleted.  Nobody wants to be liable for irreparable damage to somebody's data.

I suggest trying it on dummy data until you are very confident it works as intended.

This looks like it does the job.

I just thought I'd mention, on Windows 8 MD5Hash dialog may look grayed out and the edit control with the hash results hard to read.  This is due to MS changing how Glass and composition works from Windows Seven.

Unfortunately I have no practical means to fix it. Sorry.

A work around is hit control a in the edit control to select everything and/or copy to clipboard.

I'll have to experiment with "PostMessage" or "SendMessage" since Send only works with the active window.

On the other hand, this Powershell script looks like it will do it if you can use the window title as the window ID

http://invista.wordp...application-windows/

Edit: one example sends "^s" or control s, to Notepad.  I assume that it can send "^F5" the same way.  It should work provided the window title doesn't fluctuate.

Hmm, I searched "Copy" and didn't notice it.  Anything that seemed similar I read the description but no direct hit.

Good idea btw instead of drag/drop or opening by association and double click.

If you can use hotkeys rather than a button that is part of the window it's generally more reliable and easier to implement.

How often do you wish to send the control-F5 approximately?  Once every 2 seconds(1/2s) .. 1/s 2/s 4/s etc..

Can you uniquely identify the window?
(Edit: ahk comes with a spy to get class name of the window etc.. but most stnadard Windows dialogs have class #32770.  The class is not always unique.)

Edit2:  If you don't mind clicking the window with the mouse first to make it the active window, then ID is not an issue.  If the toggle hotkey is unusual then you are not likely to hit it in the wrong program.  But if hotkey is OK then those details can be worked out as we go along.  :)

And the last would be same key combination toggles on .. off or a different combo to start / stop?

Ok. If that's the case, why not just ask people to opt-in by giving them an option to download and run Open Candy (or other bundleware) after the product they actually requested got installed?.

Oh. I see. They don't want to do it that way. Ok...got it. ;)

Does it seem to you there's a time wasting theme with the web these days?  If there's one thing that frustrates me it's reading a whole list of features complete with screen shots and reviews, and there's no way to download the software on the page.  Or every button points me to some zip archiver I never heard of.

The Web seems to be saying "Yes, you can still get free software, bit it's gonna' cost you!'

Maybe it's all a scheme to boost tranquilizer sales?  :)

One good thing about http://www.videohelp.com
Even if the author no longer provides a download, videohelp usually still does:

It looks like is has Imgburn installers back to 1.0

@MilesAhead: Thanks. Have downloaded it to try out.

Thanks for taking a look.  It's a vanilla c++ dialog.  It's main feature, other than speed, is you can feed it multi-GB files and it won't choke.

It can be adapted to fit most circumstances--one thigh fits all.

I don't know about the other checksums, but a nice feature of the MD5 Hash algorithm is that it is designed to produce wildly different strings on the smallest difference.  It eliminates the need to do side by side string comparison.  If I do an MD5 Hash to compare files I just look at the first 4 characters in the string.  I've never seen an instance where they match and the rest of the strings do not.

Anyway, to pimp my own version MD5Hash is available here.  It queues up files to a depth of 4095.  You can right click a fairly large folder and let it go.  I tried a hybrid single/multi-instance scheme, but it is quirky since window creation, which is the governing resource of single instance, takes to long to guaraantee only one instance.  But if a copy is already open, multiple right click in Explorer sends the command lines to the open copy.

Unfortunately I don't have the source anymore to de-quirk it.  :)

i am confused, where is the link to the promotion? :-\

There is none.  The person asked in the Windows VIP forum if someone wanted a license since she had it left over.  I'm just explaining where it came from so people know it's not a keygen.

Edit:  To clear up confusion, I asked Mouser if I could post the swap msg here since it's just a "one off." I don't expect to get any more W8 Licenses.

Ok.  I successfully downloaded Windows 7 Pro 32 bit English image.  I can swap the W 8.0 Pro Licence for W7 Pro or Ult. License.

I enjoyed the Dan Ariely video.  Good humor while making his points.  Some of the "deals" used as examples reminded me of the old bit "would you like to buy 3 for a quarter?"  When the potential customer says no then, "how about 2 for a dollar?"

@Stef if you want to be cautious just make a Restore Point periodically and/or use this ERUNT Gui front end to back up just the Registry.

The underlying utility, ERUNT, I've been using for more than 10 years.  It's a good tool to have in any case. :)

Edit: but as skwire says, most programs use it to store their settings.  For example, the window size and position when the program was last closed, so it will open in the same place and size.  Most programs store that in Registry keys.  It's not that fragile, especially if you have backup.  Some registry cleaners can be dangerous.  But that's because they are deleting things wholesale.

Thanks for the advice, both of you.  I'm not sure what release has Previous Versions of Files.  But with ShadowExplorer you can get old versions of files out of Restore Points even with Home Premium.  So I guess Pro and higher is pretty much the same for my purposes.

Edit: On the other hand I already have the Ultimate image.  Downloading a complete image is not trivial as the Library blocks almost all software downloads via WiFi.

FYI, Windows 8 keys will work on a Windows 8.1 or 8.1.1 installation disc. I just re-built my machine last night after using the 8.1 update 1 ISO from MSDN using my Windows 8 key.

Very cool.  Thanks for the info.  I was just going by the info from the person who provided the License.  A relief to know all that rigamarole isn't required.  :)

« Last post by MilesAhead on April 20, 2014, 03:31 PM »
I have a legit Windows 8.0 Pro Upgrade License to swap for a Windows 7 Ult License.

Edit: As per Josh's info below, this License should work with 8.1 install Discs.

Initially I intend to use the W7 with VM Player.  If I get another PC I may install it there instead in the future. So I may be able to delay W7 activation until you are satisfied the W8 License passes muster.

Edit2:  The source of the License is a person on one of the Windows forums who has a software company.  Apparently she has a deal with MS to raffle off so many copies of W8 Pro.  She has been on those forums as a VIP member for some time.  So I'm confident it's not pirated.

Those interested please PM me.  :)

Maybe what's needed is a fake version handler.  Like when your Firefox browser says it's IE so the web page will load.  Replace the GetVersionEx() API to return 6.1.
