Two more questions, in addition to 'how long to recharge from dead',  if you can stand it...

• Were you able to move your existing Palm databases all the way through to the th55?
• Does the th55 use the same kind of sync, i.e. through some variant of the Palm Desktop?

I can't remember having a dead, so can't really answer that question. To the best of my knowledge, from "pretty low" to "pretty full" only seemed like an hour or two.
When I changed from a t1 to the th55, I'm 99% certain I didn't lose anything. It is still a palm os device and still uses the palm desktop.
I think really, you just end up with 2 or 3 more "helper" apps on your pc as well as the desktop - eg, one to facilitate getting jpgs onto your pda, one to allow you to use windows explorer to access the files on your pda (as we've become accustomed to with usb devices these days)

To answer your battery life question Chris, I'd guess a week if you were doing simple lookups. If you like I could do a trial for you.
I used to charge the th55 from my laptop.
One other thing I neglected to mention was the th55 accepts sony memory sticks, so you can store one or 2 meg of data (non volatile)
Being tied to sony memory of course has a downside too.

Here's free software for maths teachers and students which is really top stuff.

What is GeoGebra? 
GeoGebra is a dynamic mathematics software for education in secondary schools that joins geometry, algebra and calculus.
On the one hand, GeoGebra is a dynamic geometry system. You can do constructions with points, vectors, segments, lines, conic sections as well as functions and change them dynamically afterwards.

On the other hand, equations and coordinates can be entered directly. Thus, GeoGebra has the ability to deal with variables for numbers, vectors and points, finds derivatives and integrals of functions and offers commands like Root or Extremum.

These two views are characteristic of GeoGebra: an expression in the algebra window corresponds to an object in the geometry window and vice versa."

So what does it actually do? It lets you construct elements listed in the quote which can be manipulated by the student. Not only can you manipulate the "geometry", but you can also see values of variables changing. Your construction can be exported to an applet embedded in a web page.

I used a palm 3, then handspring visor then a tungsten t1 then finally a th55. The th55 is a joy to use.
Of course sony stopped making them a while back.
Why ...screen, form factor, battery life (drat, no aaa). A bit slow perhaps compared to the last palms, but as I get older, I'm
getting slower anyway.
Has wifi - only wep tho, and I didnt buy the bluetooth which I should have.

I can't speak to those you raised because I haven't attempted to engage him in any conversation.
Guess the only thing I could possibly say is we all have to co-exist with people we don't like, or whose bearing/manner we find a bit "off".

let me start by saying I 100% agree with you re the nature of this community.
However, I got the idea that you had 2 basic concerns, that
1. you couldn't understand Gri's posts and
2. they weren't helpful.
(from those 2 concerns flowed the "lack of respect" you mentioned.)
With regard to 1. :Seems very dangerous in principle to ban people because you don't understand what they're saying. (I just got back from visiting family in law for 4 weeks in singapore and most of the time couldn't understand them cos the buggers only speak chinese!!) Also sometimes I have trouble understanding posts here but that's because of my lack of technical expertise most likely.

With regard to 2. Posts need not only be helpful, surely. They may be amusing for example.

Is it a case of "but they're always the same"? ... then what should the threshold be when the helpful-understandable:non-helpful-nonunderstandable ratio becomes unacceptable.
This sorta leads in my mind to a big problem.

Finally, it seems to me a matter of balancing Gri's right to post against the danger posed to the DC community. In this instance I can't see that there's a big danger. I've come across a couple of posts which gave me really bad vibes (as in geez, sounds like a mean spirited/nasty person), but the posters seemed to disappear. Gri's posts don't seem to have that quality.

- I read some of Gri's writing - too mentally lazy to nut it all out - but got the impression that some things he/she said were quite sensible
- A thought - the DC community seems to have caring, helpful, tolerant values - doesn't banning someone somehow diminish those values?
- even if Gri were found to be on the outer limits of eccentricity, haven't we got room to adopt him/her as our very own eccentric?

After installing ie7, maxthon, which is my preferred browser, began shutting down of its own accord roughly every 2 or 3 minutes.
No fuss(eg screen freeze), no warning, just shut and disappeared. Returning to pre ie7 times via system restore fixed the problem.

Just want to mention that I took advantage of the Dr Explain discount offer. I offered 2 bonus marks in the next test I give to any student who would be in a photo for the discount offer. About 20 students jumped at the chance and as a consequence I got a 100% discount.
To top that off, I was VERY kindly given a second FREE license because of the big number of students.
A really nice gesture!!!

I bought direct folders some time ago. Great except for task manager regularly showing it to be using 90-95% cpu for a minute or two at a time.
Requiring me to terminate direct folders to be able to continue working.
Ive downloaded v3 and get the same behaviour. Tried 2ce to get support from the developer to no avail, so direct folders is not on my list of triffic software.

Making another bootable CD with rescue tools is not needed, however one with all of the donationcoder.com software would be a great idea as we could make a nice autorun interface that allows users to install all of the apps from DC.COM (at the time) that they use in one foul swoop.

Thanks for the suggestions - trouble with using the internet for file sharing is speed really. Ideally it would be good to access the local wireless network. At the moment it finds the router and I can connect to the internet but becase the laptop isn't set up as part of the local workgroup it can't see local network resources.

I log onto a domain at school. At home, I still get the same logon dialog, which I fill in as for school and I don't try to join any workgroup. Once I did run a wizard (set up for home networking?) which enabled me to see the other 2 computers at home and it didn't affect me vis a vis the domain logging on. My wife's laptop, and my old desktop, both belong to the same workgroup. They can all see each other and share files through the wireless network. The 2 workgroup ones see each other "easier" than my laptop does... I don't trust the laptop to communicate 100% of the time. Don't ask why - I'm a bit like an idiot savant in this area in that I just do stuff and it works, but I'm a bloody idiot knowledge wise. Sorry I can't be helpful.

I use Maxthon, which has an option to use the ie proxy. I just wrote an ahk script which asks whether I'm at home or school, then firstly, it sorts the proxy for ie to use, then secondly, changes my smtp settings and pop accounts to check in foxmail (my email client). Reason for latter is that checking external pop accounts directly is barred at school (another typically dumb school idea)
