I have used Autopatcher with great success in the past.  It is a huge download, but I've done it without bittorrent.  I always use the Cachefly mirror at http://www.getautopatcher.com/

Once you get the core download, you only need to download the monthly updates which are much smaller.

Found this little gem on FreewareGenuis (http://www.freewaregenius.com/).  It's a platform game.  I think.  And it's art. I think.  And it's awesome.  I know.

It feels like being inside the head of an Surrealist artist... a crazy, mixed up, wonderful Surrealist artist.  I don't want to say too much and ruin it for you, so I'll just let you find out for yourself.

Take a look, and turn up the volume.

Living Room / Apple iPhone bills... much bigger than expected...

Wow... iPhone early adopters have started getting their first bills, and they are massive.  Not big as in cost... big as in 30-50 pages, double sided, of itemized internet use.

For me using a single pane browser is not "going back", I seldom need it--ZTree usage differs from all those mouse extensive browsers. But if you want it, just press F8 (or configure ZTree to use it all the time).

Here's the dual pane view from pressing F8 as yksyks pointed out:

It's absolutely beautiful... I really, really want to love it.  The question is, can I revert to text mode or am I trapped in this modern gui?

If you hit Alt+Enter while the program is running, it will switch to full screen text mode.

General Software Discussion / Re: Directory Opus 9

Something really strange happened to the colors in my DO9. Suddenly, all files and folders had turqouise backgrounds and pink letters. I didn't set it up that way and had to manually mess with changing colors in the settings. Quite the pain.. I was looking for an option to revert settings to default in the prefs and could not find that. Is there a way to do that?

I made a theme with the default color scheme.  Just unzip it, import it into DO, and apply it.  It should only change the color scheme, and not mess with anything else.

Get it here: http://www.carlthorp...om/defaultcolors.zip

Living Room / Some laser printers are as danagerous as cigarette smoking...
« Last post by cthorpe on August 02, 2007, 02:32 AM »
hp_laserjet_1320_b.jpg

A group of researchers have concluded that some laser printers emit dangerous particles when used.  These particles are similar to those that are found in cigarette smoke.  One printer tested actually releases particles at a level similar to what you would get by actually smoking, so it would seem that laser printers may be as hazardous to your health.  There is a post about the study on CyberNet News at http://tech.cybernet...as-cigarette-smoking, and it was initially reported by VNUNet.com (http://www.vnunet.co...ers-seriously-damage).

Of the 62 printers tested, only 17 emitted particles that may be hazardous to your health.  The article was published by the American Chemical Society, and is not publically accessible at this time.  If you can access their online article repository, you can read the whole thing (see the article citation at the end of this post).  The university that my wife attends has a subscription, so I was able to read the study.  Most of the article is pretty hard to follow, but here is the list of tested printers and the results:

No emissions

  • HP
    • Color LaserJet 450DN and 8500DN
    • LaserJet 2200DN, 2300dtn, 4 plus, 4000N, 4000TN, 4050N, 4050TN, 4si, 5(b), 5000n, 5100tn, 5N, 5si, 5si/NX, 8000DN, 8150DN
  • Mita
    • DC 4060
  • RICOH
    • Afico 2022, 3045, 3245C, CC3000DN
  • Toshiba
    • Studio 350

Low level emissions

  • Canon
    • IRC6800
  • HP
    • LaserJet 5M and 9000dn
  • Ricoh
    • CL3000DN

Mid-range emissions

  • HP
    • LaserJet 1020 and 4200dtn

High emissions

  • HP
    • Color LaserJet 4650dn, 5550dtn, 8550N
    • LaserJet 1320N, 1320n, 2420dn, 4200dtn (possible), 4250, 5(a), 8000DN (possible), and 8150N
  • Toshiba
    • Studio 450

Of the high emission printers, the HP LaserJet 1320N is the worst with emissions close to cigarette smoking.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Review: ArtRage 2.2 (free and full versions)
« Last post by cthorpe on July 25, 2007, 01:44 AM »
ArtRage 2.5 was just released, and it has some great new features.  It is a free upgrade for all registered users of 2.2.  For new purchasers, there has been a slight price increase from $20 to $25 USD.  There is no free version of 2.5 at this time.

Major feature enhancements:
  • Stencils & Rulers
  • Layer Content Transformation
  • Copy & Paste
  • Layer Groups & Layer Names
  • Resolution Support
  • Smooth Blender
  • Precise Pencil
  • Mousewheel Zoom
  • Recent Files List
  • More Image Formats
  • Internal Updater
  • Toolbox Panel
  • Layers Panel
  • Color Samples Panel
  • Languages
  • OSX Application Bundle
  • OSX Window Resizing
  • Crash Recovery
  • Import To Layer
  • Bump Blend Modes
  • Canvas Zoom Shortcut
  • User Content Support Shifted
  • Reference Image Persistency
  • Improved Vista Support

Unofficial Technical Features.
  • Light Switch
  • Export of Channels
  • Toggle stencil display

I will cover just a few of the new features right now.  I hope to cover a few more as I get more time to explore them.

Stencils and Rulers

This is the most obvious new feature.  You can now overlay stencils and rulers on your drawings to make straight lines, curves, shapes, etc.  When  you put down a stencil, you can of course move it around, rotate it, and scale it as needed.  Also, you can overlap stencils to get cool effects.
For each stencil, you can use it in stencil, ruler, or guide mode.  Stencil mode acts as you would expect.  In ruler and guide mode, your tool sticks to the edge of the object so you can trace along the side.  In ruler, no marks are made under the object.  In guide, your stroke will follow
the object and the mark will appear under the edge of the guide.  It's hard to explain, so just try it out.
stencilsandrulers.png

Transform layers independently
Now you can rotate, scale, and move layers independently of each other.  This has many uses.  For example, if you duplicate layers, then transform each one, you can rapidly populate a scene.
transform.png

Group layers
You can create groups for your layers and manipulate opacity, blending, show/hide, etc on all of the layers in the group at one time.  You can move layers in and out of the groups at will.
grouplayers.png

Smooth blending
The palette knife now has a smooth blending mode that gently smudges your image.
smooth.png

Mechanical pencil
The "Precise" mode of the pencil tool lets you make smooth lines that aren't effected by the grain as much as the regular pencil.  All of the writing on my screen shots was done with this mode.
pencil.png

A minor quibble...
In version 2.2, any user generated content such as paper presets, custom color pickers, etc were stored in the application's directory.  In version 2.5, all of that is stored in the Application Data folder under your user name (in XP, that's SystemDrive:/Documents and Settings/User name/Application Data/Ambient Design/).
The developer says that this is to "guarantee that regardless of the access rights your login has, you can still create and use presets. ArtRage stores its own default files in its own folder, but any Stencils, Canvas Presets, Size Presets, or Custom Color Pickers you create will be stored by default in your own login's application support location" (http://www2.ambientd...viewtopic.php?t=7624).
I understand the reasoning, but I would like the option of storing that content in the old location.  The biggest reason is that it allows all user names on the computer to access the content.  In my case, it also allows me to retain the data over reboots as my computer
reverts the system drive to a saved state whenever windows starts.  With version 2.2, I just installed the program to a secondary partition, and all of the generated content was retained.

Final thoughts
This is an amazing update.  As I look down the list of changes, I see so many things that were suggested by users in the ArtRage forums.  It is great to see a developer that really listens to what their customers want.  Aside from my one minor issue, I haven't come across anything else to make me hesitate in recommending that all current customers upgrade immediately.  For new customers, even with the $5 rise in price, this program is amazing and worth every cent.

General Software Discussion / Re: PDF Cooker wanted... Let me explain
« Last post by cthorpe on July 24, 2007, 11:55 PM »
This page has a javascript file that will give you menu options in Adobe Reader for flattening...

http://www.linetype....vice/cad/flatten.htm

Flattening PDF Annotations

PDF files can contain two different types of data -- graphics and annotations.  Graphics are static images -- text, vector drawings, or raster images.  Annotations are interactive objects that have a graphic associated with them.  Stamps, redline comments, sticky notes, digital signatures, and form fields are all examples of annotations.

...

Although the interactive features of annotations can be very useful in some situations, at other times it may be desirable to disable this interactivity and turn the annotation into a simple graphic that cannot be changed or deleted so easily.  This is called "flattening" the annotation.

Looks like PDFTK might be able to help you, and it's open source:

The command might be something like this:

pdftk borkedpdf.pdf output fixedpdf.pdf flatten

It's a command line program, so no screenshots.

I am interested to see how the company deals with these same issues regarding the Book Collectorz software that was recently upgraded to version 5.0.  Once again they are asking for an upgrade fee, again with free upgrades for users who purchased the software before November 14.  I have emailed Mark-Jan to ask how this will be resolved in light of earlier discussions about their site indicating free lifetime upgrades after the November 14 cutoff date.  I have high hopes that it will be resolved in a positive manner.

Is there anybody out there who uses igoogle with the gmail module that can tell me if it is acting strange for you?  I have tried multiple browsers and multiple accounts and I keep getting things that look like this:

Edit:  It's back to working correctly today.  I didn't change anything between when it wasn't working last night it this afternoon, so I will just assume it was a Google issue.
