Found Deals and Discounts / Re: InfoRecall - $5.99?!?!

I think all these PIM type applications that are not handling syncing with mobile devices well, are probably dying a slow death.
I'm not sure whether I'd call Surfulater a PIM--I don't use it for contacts, calendar, etc., just to save information from the web, from documents, from whatever.  But FWIW, I thought I'd mention that Surfulater's developer has been actively working on a version that will work/sync with mobile devices as well as desktops, etc.  He has recently been talking about this in two blog postings: http://blog.surfulater.com/2012/06/29/surfulater-next-generation-part-1/ and http://blog.surfulater.com/2012/07/03/surfulater-next-generation-part-2/.  I know nothing more, but I've used Surfulater on my desktop and netbook for several years, and I love it.

Just thought I'd mention that I've been using mouser's Launch Bar Commander as a Start button substitute, both on XP and on Windows 7.  I have no idea whether I'll ever move to Windows 8 (so far, I haven't heard of any good reason for me to do so), but I hope that LBC will also continue to be developed so that it works on new versions.  It's been a godsend for me.

Btw are there any screen types that are viewable in direct sunlight other than ones with AMOLED in their name?
FWIW, I told my husband what you had said about AMOLED and 10 hr. battery life.  He replied that his Optimus V is very good in direct sunlight.  It apparently has several different levels you can set it to.  As for battery life, he has his phone on all the time and often uses it many hours a day as a reader, as well as to read his email, check traffic conditions, read the web, etc., and with that kind of usage he gets FAR MORE than 10 hours of battery life.  But he's not downloading huge amounts of data, watching movies, etc.  And, of course, Optimus V does not run ICS.  But he's very pleased with his phone, and I thought I'd pass along what he said.

DaddyDave, I still have a dumb phone, but my husband has a smartphone from Virgin Mobile.  He didn't buy it from Virgin Mobile, but it's one they carry, and they were perfectly happy to accept it even though he didn't buy it from them.  They offer some terrific pricing on monthly fees.  They also have a rather large array of phones to choose from, including a number in the price range you've mentioned.  Given their modest monthly fees and reasonably priced phones, it might be worth taking another look.  http://www.virginmobileusa.com/cell-phone-plans/beyond-talk-plans.jsp.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: 14 days with SmugMug and Zenfolio

Thanks very much, Jibz.  Very helpful comparison.  I've heard good things about SmugMug, but I hadn't heard of Zenfolio until now.  Sounds very attractive.

The subject header says it all.  More info at http://www.bitsdujour.com/software/surfulater/.  Surfulater is one of my favorite programs.  It's normally somewhat pricey, so 50% off is a real help.

Thanks, IainB, for the clarification.  Interesting strategy!  My only reservation is that it still puts your email at the mercy of Google.  These days, that makes me slightly uneasy.
333
I have dual real-time automatic backup of my Gmail account organised. I would already have 2 copies of such a deleted email - one in each of the separate backups.
Iain, I'm just curious--what do you use to backup your Gmail account in real time?  Did you create your own backup program, or are you using a third-party software program?
334
Thanks, nudone and Jibz.  I tend to agree with you.  I can't imagine why she thinks it's a security hole in Chrome that is causing this, especially since there doesn't seem to have been any publicity about this rather serious problem.  And yes, I know several people who have had their hotmail accounts hacked.  But is hotmail the same as msn?  I hadn't thought so, though they're both Microsoft.  She's got an msn.com address.  Oh well, no reason that msn is any safer than hotmail.

Again, many thanks.  I figure if the folks at DonationCoder haven't heard about this supposed security hole, it probably doesn't exist.

Just for the record, when you say "from", do you mean you checked the headers and it looked like it was a message genuinely sent from her account, or just that the "From:" field in the e-mail contained her e-mail address?
Good question, Jibz.  The message was such obvious spam that I didn't bother to check the headers.  I simply assumed that someone had hacked her MSN email account and was now sending spam to everyone in her addressbook.  I wrote to let her know, and in response I got the explanation I quoted in my original message here.  It didn't seem like a likely explanation, so I thought I'd post a message here and see whether anyone has heard of a similar "problem" with Chrome.  But now that you've asked, I looked at the headers.  There weren't a lot, especially before the message was received at my university (where I have the email account to which the message was sent).  Here are some key pieces of info from the headers (I've changed the name of the person I know to janedoe and my university's address to ********.edu):

The return path header was Return-Path: <[email protected]>

The headers from the start to when it got to my university were as follows:
Received: from snt0-omc4-s11.snt0.hotmail.com (snt0-omc4-s11.snt0.hotmail.com [65.55.90.214])
by ********.edu (mx3.********.edu) with ESMTP id q5I2vdq7025380

Received: from SNT102-W47 ([65.55.90.201]) by snt0-omc4-s11.snt0.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.4675);

X-Originating-IP: [189.224.78.19]
From: Jane Doe <[email protected]>

If the Originating IP # is not forged, it's in Mexico.  I don't know where this person lives (I "know" her only via listservs we're both on); I kinda doubt she's in Mexico, though it's not impossible.  The message-ID ends in @phx.gbl, which is apparently something that appears in many messages from Microsoft-related mail.  Since she's got an account at msn.com, I guess that makes sense.  Perhaps so too does the appearance of hotmail.com in one of the headers, I don't know.  All the unshown headers after these (leading up to the Return-Path header) look normal.  They're all internal to my university.

So no, it's not just the "From" field that makes me think it came from her account, but the Originating-IP in Mexico does give me pause.  I'm not sure, however, whether the headers indicate clearly whether her email account was simply hacked or whether somehow a "bad website" was able to send spam from her account (her explanation).  Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, all.  I'm trying to get more information about something I've just been told about Google Chrome.  Yesterday, I received a spam message from someone I know.  I assumed that her email account had been hacked, and I wrote to her to let her know.  Today, I received a reply from her, saying that "Actually, there is some kind of security gap in Google Chrome that allows a bad website to send out spam from my account."  I'm highly skeptical of this explanation.  I'd imagine that 1) if there were so serious a flaw in Chrome, there would have been mention of it in lots of places that I read, and 2) Google would have quickly found a way to fix it.  I don't use Chrome, but if I did, I'd drop it like a hot potato if it had such a flaw.   Has anyone here heard of or experienced this flaw?

General Software Discussion / Re: PhotoStitcher - GOTD on 2012-06-14
« Last post by cyberdiva on June 14, 2012, 08:06 AM »
Because I own InPaint, which this company also makes, I received a notice a few weeks ago about the availability of PhotoStitcher and an offer to get it for $9.95.  I love InPaint, and I've thought from time to time that I'd like to be able to make panoramas easily (the one time I tried with a different program, I failed), so I downloaded PhotoStitcher, quickly took three photos of my neighborhood as seen from my doorstep, and used PhotoStitcher to combine them into a panorama.  It did so quickly and skillfully, so I bought the program.  I haven't yet used it again, but I'm glad I have it.  I don't even mind having paid for it, since the price was reasonable and I'm happy to support the company that makes InPaint.  I should add that I'm a very amateur photographer--it might be that someone more skilled would have needs that PhotoStitcher doesn't meet.  But for me, it does the job quickly and well.

General Software Discussion / Re: Popup Translator Shootout?
« Last post by cyberdiva on June 10, 2012, 08:50 AM »
is there a translator that will search for the text under the cursor or the highlighted/selected text in a webpage dictionary that we have specified and show the result from there?
I realize that this question is from 2010, but in reading through the thread today I came upon it.  I thought I'd mention that if I highlight some text in my browser (I tried it in both Firefox and Opera) while Google TranslateClient Pro is open, a blue G will appear next to the passage I've highlighted.  If I click on the G, I'll get a translation into Spanish (since that's the language I most often translate to/from), though I can choose other possibilities.   (Often, there's not just a G but GWS.  If I choose W, it will search for the highlighted term in Wikipedia, while S will make it search for the highlighted passage in one of several search engines.)   Also, I see that there's a tiny icon that lets me hear the words I've highlighted.  Pretty neat, though I use Google TranslateClient Pro primarily to help me write in Spanish, and I still feel that its ability to translate from English into Spanish and vice versa has deteriorated since the time the program was free.

I used to be very enthusiastic about Google's TranslateClient.  It seemed to me much better than anything else I tried.  When Google announced that TranslateClient would be available only in a Pro version, I bought it.  Alas, for some reason that I don't understand, its translation ability seems to have deteriorated.  Surprisingly often it gives me a literal (mis)translation that has little to do with the meaning.  I can't offhand think of an example, but it has happened quite a bit.  Also, it now gives me the option of trying Microsoft's translations (both options appear on the interface), and Microsoft's usually reminds me that there are worse translators than Google.

There are some other issues, too, including the possibility that its use may be limited to a certain total number of characters (not per translation, but in all translations).  I just noticed this and will ask tech support about it.

Yes, I noticed that too. Ruddy annoying cheek. I am not giving them my email contacts list to sell/spam.
Yes, both LinkedIn and Facebook ask me for my email login and password.  Fat chance!  What surprises me is how many people do provide this information willingly.

The leakedin website lets you type in your password, and it will check to see if it has been leaked by linkedin. I say don't type your passwords into any other website than the one it belongs to.
When I read your earlier message, I thought your parenthetical "(leakedin)" was referring to LinkedIn, since your message came not long after IainB's humorous remark about LinkedIn changing its name to LeakedIn.   Now I see I was mistaken.  I totally agree with your advice about not typing a password into sites other than the one it belongs to.  Though LeakedIn is probably legitimate, there's always the possibility that it or a similar site may really be intent on gathering people's passwords, passwords typed in without even the protection that serious encryption offers.
342
Don't type your password into random websites (leakedin)
Hi, Justice.  I'm not really sure what you mean.  Do you mean "enter your password some other way rather than typing it in"?  Or do you mean that LinkedIn (which I agreed to join and for which I have set a specific password) is a "random website"??  :tellme:

Congratulations, Renegade and kunkel321.  Renegade, I understand your reluctance to post your very adorable daughter's photos publicly.  I confess that I didn't worry about such things when my son was born--mostly because there wasn't yet a Web.  ;D

I'm another person who has tried several clip managers, but none I've tried has come close to ClipMate, which has been my favorite for more than (gasp) 15 years.  Unfortunately, ClipMate's developer seems to have disappeared from the forum and, perhaps, from working on the software as well.  So while I continue to use and value ClipMate, I'm now keeping my eyes open for an eventual replacement.  I took advantage of the BitsduJour offer for Clipstory, but I haven't (yet) installed it.  But belated thanks, erikts, for calling attention to the offer.

@rjbull - No, I didn't mean to imply that Linkman can bookmark a given position in a web page, but I can see how my statement might be interpreted that way.  What I intended was two separate possibilities: a bookmark to enable one to go back to a particular place in a document OR a bookmark to enable one to go back to a particular web page (not a particular place in that web page).  The bookmarks I make in UltraEdit, PDF-XChange Viewer, and TextMaker do the former, while the bookmarks in Linkman do the latter.  (See Steven Avery's discussion above for more discussion of what Linkman can do.)

Hi, Tomos.  I'm not quite sure I understand your question.  Each program creates bookmarks in its own way.  Perhaps I should start by saying that by "bookmark," I mean setting a way to get back to a particular place in a document or a particular web page."  In my PDF reader, PDF-XChange Viewer, there's a column on the left side of the interface called "Bookmarks."  If I come to a place in the PDF document I'm reading that I want to be able to find again easily, I just click on "New" under Bookmarks.  The bookmark will show up in the Bookmarks column, with whatever name I give it.  I can set multiple bookmarks this way, and they'll all be listed.  Any time I click on one of the bookmarks, I will be taken to its location in the document.

The method is somewhat different but the result is similar in UltraEdit (for TXT or HTML files) and TextMaker (for DOC files).   Somehow I have the feeling that this may not have been what you were asking, but....

This will take some testing to see if the extra pointing functionality is important, and how smooth it is, and whether it justifies augmenting Linkman.  Or if there is something here that should be suggested to Outertech for the long term :) .

For me, the big functionality improvement would be PDFs, which are notoriously resistant to good bookmarking and are often fairly long.
-Steven Avery (April 02, 2012, 10:28 PM)
I haven't tried Bookmarkdocs, probably because I haven't felt the need to do so.  Like Steven, I'm very pleased with Linkman for most web bookmark needs.  Off the web, I've made bookmarks easily in TXT documents with my text editor, UltraEdit, and I've found that I can make bookmarks in PDF files with my pdf reader, the free PDF-XChange Viewer.  As for DOC files, I use SoftMaker Office, and their MSWord alternative, TextMaker, also can make bookmarks.  That leaves relatively few things for which I'd need Bookmarkdocs.

JSHOT allows you append screenshots together either beside or below when you take take the shot .
HyperSnap also has this feature.

I have a license for HyperSnap 6, but not the latest, 7.  Are you thinking of the "Multi-region capture," or something else?
No, I'm talking about a feature under Capture Settings that allows you to paste each new capture to the one before it, either vertically or horizontally.  You can also set an optional margin between captures.  I think this may be a new feature of version 7, but I'm not sure.  At any rate, I've found it quite useful at times.

@cyberdiva: i read somewhere that if you are using more than 5GB of the storage and your account will be auto-upgraded. no opt-in necessary. anyway, i'm posting the screenie i took earlier..
Thanks very much for the screenshot and the info.  Since I already had about 18 GB of stuff stored on SkyDrive, I guess they "upgraded" me automatically to the 25 GB they offered when I signed up originally.
