Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?
« Last post by wraith808 on April 20, 2021, 10:52 AM »
Having exhausted the available Jack Reacher novels I have been going through the Mitch Rapp series.

Seems like a weird name for a hero.  Perhaps it has to do with character ownership rights.  I do not imagine very many character name collisions with that moniker.  :)

I like those and have read all of them. Never thought it was a weird name, though. Rapp is a relatively known if not overly so last name.

I've just had my invitation to Timeline 3. Impressed on a very brief inspection, and the spreadsheet pane is very helpful. I expect to add it as a core tool to my own workflow. But it is highly complex and unlikely to be worth using for anything simpler.

Thanks for that. I had an invitation earlier, but as my use of Timeline has been limited because of having to use the timeline to set it up and that being a little painful, I'd not taken a look. If they have a new interface to allow you to enter in a different fashion and then just view them along the timeline, it might prove more useful.

Though I see he's developing v2, and it's a bit pricier- at $10 a month after beta!
The email I received seemed to suggest that those paying 5 would just continue unchanged.
But I can see it being worth it for users who are productive with it. There's nothing else like it really.
I might have a look at the new version, but never progressed beyond quite liking the old one.

Unless I just didn't pay attention, I never received an e-mail, and I'm a subscriber.

What it seems like to me taking a look, they are going to be separate products. The two options as I saw it were:

You can continue to pay for v1 and know that it will get no updates and be fine with it (after taking a look, I don't see anything compelling about v2, so might just do that).
You can migrate to v2.

The reason it seemed that way was that to use v2 at all, I had to set up a completely separate account.

A third option seems to be the new desktop app- I might go with that as it's supposed to be receiving updates and should get synchronization (which the current one doesn't have).

I formerly used SourceTree and still do occasionally, but for the most part, I just use VS Code or Git Extensions. I've been wanting to take a look at Sublime Merge- just haven't taken the time yet. I'll add Fork to that list.

As far as Bitbucket vs Github vs Gitlab - I don't trust any of them totally, so use all of them equally, in addition to having a server on my own NAS.

Also noticed that Gingko is moving to $5 a month with a free trial rather than a document limit.

It's been that way for a while (the $5 a month), and it gets you the desktop app too, which is a self-sufficient application rather than being tied to the online version. I think it's been in transtition for a while, but I've been happily paying the $5 for a while.

Though I see he's developing v2, and it's a bit pricier- at $10 a month after beta!

I already stopped using TagSpaces. With largish collections of documents, it really lags. I'm just using tags in my md documents for the markdown, and one of the editors that I'm using - Deepdwn- categorizes by the tags in the yaml.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to connect to GitLab using SourceTree?

I use sourcetree and Pageant so I know your pain about the format of the ppk. I'm not sure since you don't know your password, but you can try to regen with PuttyGen from your openssh key and put in the same password you think you used before to see if that helps you connect via SSH.

I love seeing your processes, as they point out places that I can improve mine. I'd never looked at my Zettel from a perspective of taking things from my browser, other than what I explicitly consume. After seeing how integrated your browser was with your process, I looked for, and found, a webpage to MD converter that clipped from web pages in VS Code. Finding that minimizes one other tool that I use - Notion. I used that as a storage space for my web clippings, and used automation to get things out when needed. This skips that step!

Oh Writage is the one that lets you write in Markdown in Word, right?
336
Ha! Yes. Thanks.  It certainly wasn't something that sprang to my mind, and I don't remember ever hearing about it before. Though I might have forgotten.
And it's certainly from a different dimension.

Writing Outliner had been out for a while (and was very useful as with Scrivener and other mediums, I'd have to export and get it in Word format for submission, but being able to just do it in Word was great). He dropped it for a while for a rewrite, had problems but released the new version, then immediately got started on this, which then replaced Writing Outliner. For some reason, this one never took off for me.
337
There's also DocXManager (formerly Writing Outliner) - https://docxmanager.com/

I'd like in on this. I have 1.9.7.0 and would love to have the latest version. Thanks!

You can get the same discount (well 49% instead of 50%) already without this. Just download the newest version, run it, and then in the registration dialog that comes up, say that you want to upgrade from an older version. That's how I realized I didn't need this coupon and offered it here.

You landed on MajorGeeks:

Thank you for warning me
I do not understand why they put it up there and more I do not understand why they not share origin link.
If someone try to tell me something over there, I do not receive it.
Somehow I plan to make it part of distritbution license to have a origin link included, still free of charge etc... I do need feedback, bad or good doesnt matter. It just can get better.

I'm sorry that I can't really look forward to it / being happy about that.

The link to the origin page is there. Your name on the software page is the link back to this thread.

A Master list of Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows 10 reveals nothing about CTRL+SHIFT+R other than it is used to refresh a page in Edge (it is also used for that in other browsers).

https://www.winhelpo...hortcuts-windows-10/

Your example is not a global hotkey. It is internal shortcut that can not survive if proper application is closed. Global hotkeys are a bit different on that point ;-)

Oh, I know that. But I was looking for Windows specific keys that might be mapped over them (it happens).

For completing my renegade NaNoWriMo project, one of the items I received was a Scrivener coupon. I was saving it in case it would help me on the upgrade to Scrivener 3, but it gives me the exact same discount. Active users (registered before today, active on the forums at my discretion) can post below, and I'll randomly select a winner on April 16th. The coupon is good until November 1st, 2021.

@4wd - would it be too much to illustrate Presearch as example?  :-[

Re-read your post at least 4 times...

Wish i was a coder!

The little html i learned years ago, is long gone.

Basically, after you do a search on the platform, look at the format of the search terms. They should tell you how to format your url in your script. That's what @4wd is illustrating.

General Software Discussion / Re: Cannot claim free space in C:\

Try running CHKDSK C: /R in PowerShell (you will need to restart).

Sometimes if there are issues with the file map on the drive space remains marked as in use after deleting files.

You could also use the built in Windows utility Disk Cleanup from the start menu (just click start and type Disk and it will popup, run it and click Clean System Files). If you have old leftover windows installations after updates they take up a lot of space (sometimes 30Gb+). Note it can take a long time to delete some stuff so be patient.

A Carol sighting! It's great to see you again! Not as long as between your prior posts- but still a while without you around!

We'd probably need to know a bit more about this script.

Just to give some background:
computer HDD and main backup drive both gave up the ghost a while back.
I'm cobbling files together from various incomplete backups.

I notice with photos that some are more recent versions with different file sizes. This possibly from e.g. rotating in Dopus (and saving rotation) but with many files I can see no reason for the different modified date / size. So if anything I want to overwrite the newer with the older version. (FWIW this does not seem to be an option either in Syncovery.)

But it's such a mess I just want to get the same folder structure on both sides, then I can look at the dates closer.

EDIT// REQUEST #2:
what I need with the dates is the ability to replace newer files with older. This not an option with Syncovery or Dopus...

Isn't that just overwrite no matter what? That's an option.

I think a lot of this relates to the direction the developers want to take the application. I haven't seen any indication that they want to make it a general purpose application.

I'm not sure. I agree it's not their own intent, but they do follow users and are very open to almost anything being done with plugins and frequently consider extending the API to make some plugins possible. But how much can reasonably be done via plugins I have no idea.

Oh, I'd agree if it can be done via plugin they'd make it possible to be done that way. I was just talking about core intent. The way I'm using VS Code right now isn't MS's intent. However, it's made possible by extensions. And they've shown that they are open to including particularly useful functionality from extensions in the core app.

Living Room / Re: Whoever understands NFTs let's make one for DonationCoder

Interesting article comparing NFTs to DRM - https://copyrightand...drm-by-another-name/

This part was especially interesting to someone like me who just knows the basics:

The winner of that auction at Christie’s last week, who goes by the pseudonym Metakovan, no more owns that pile of bits by the digital artist Beeple than I own the ebooks that I got from Amazon. I can read the ebooks on my laptop and my phone (and my Kindle reader, if I could find it in my closet), but I couldn’t read them on my Nook or Kobo (if I had either). I can’t resell, give away, or rent them; even if I were to hack the DRM, I’d be violating Amazon’s terms of service.

Metakovan can view the Beeple artwork on any device that will display JPEGs. But in a sense, he can’t alienate the work either, because it’s already available to everyone in exactly the same format as it is to him. He can’t lend or rent the NFT, because the NFT platform doesn’t support those operations (though it could). He can resell the NFT, but then he doesn’t get to keep all the revenue from the resale–commissions go back to both the artist and the NFT platform and/or auction house. (Resale royalties to artists for physical art objects are mandated by law in many countries, but not in the U.S.) It’s not clear whether he can give the NFT away (i.e., resell it for $0) or leave it to his children to inherit.

In neither the NFT nor DRM cases do buyers get the same bundle of rights that are guaranteed for a physical object in copyright law. In both cases a single private entity controls and benefits from the process in perpetuity, whereas no private entity is involved–or is even allowed by law to be involved–after someone purchases a physical copyrighted work.

In a twitter thread, an interesting comparison is also posed about this particular form of ownership by Matt Levine of Bloomberg:

https://twitter.com/...784691029180425?s=20

NFTs are a new form of tradable ostentation rather than a new form of tradable ownership.

Obsidian would expand to be a more general system-of-plaintext-notes editor/viewer. Compare to how VS Code is an editor/viewer for code in different programming languages. That ties in with our previous discussions here for/against the markdown format(s) and alternatives to it.

I think a lot of this relates to the direction the developers want to take the application. I haven't seen any indication that they want to make it a general purpose application.
