Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: desktop icon manager/grouping
« Last post by mitzevo on February 11, 2007, 06:40 AM »
lanux128, yes that's right - this is not what I had in mind  ;D
there are a few good desktop programs (like the one Perry mentioned) that keep the layout of the desktop, wallpaper, etc. allowing you to save profiles and switch between them for work, gaming, dev, etc.

but what I did have in mind was a more advanced desktop manager that allows you to sort the desktop, where certain files appear, etc.

Finished Programs / SOLVED: desktop icon manager/grouping
« Last post by mitzevo on January 22, 2007, 10:00 AM »
Hi there,

Was wondering if it's possible to make an app that controls how desktop icons are displayed.
Desktop icons by default when created are place on top left of screen or more so under the previous icon on left part
of the desktop.

Is it possible to, say, have a program to control where new icons are placed? For example:
all new .txt files are placed in a designated spot, or box on the right side of the desktop..
and shortcuts are placed on left, while .doc files are placed on the right side on the bottem..

Imagine the desktop split in 3 parts, each "box" is an area where icons will go

I know this would help me alot because I have work files (mainly .doc's) and work unrelated files (like what ever).
Some times I will make a background wallpaper with sections with titles like: "temp", "work", etc.

Ok hold on, let me find an old background I used for a little while..
* mitzevo searches for it..

Untitled-2.jpg

see how I have a section for temp files.. Now that I've gone thru great pains of attaching that image I might as well do some mock ups of how some program might manage icons..
* mitzevo dabbles..

ok see this attempt at trying to convey my meaning...

iconexgrid.jpg

the grid like or division like lines could be toggled/turned on/off, what ever the user wants.. or maybe this is just an unneeded feature.. anyway
maybe this could be the beginning of an advanced desktop organizer with regions that can be controlled..

any ways does any one have any thing to say about this? I tried looking for some thing like this a while back and only found desktop icon position savers, and related.

wicked, i remember asking for some thing exactly like this a month back ;)

ED5T..
* mitzevo turns all lock keys off.. :D

edit:

I had a play with it, maybe some things that you could add (if you wanted to, ofcourse :P)..
show this text/image every 1 ... -> the lowest value could be 1ms.. i think 1 sec is too long... well now
that I think of it if you do this for text then it would just stay on the screen right?

any ways, main feature that would be killer is being able to select a set of images to display, say a set
of flash cards, and also being able to set the speed at which they shuffle/iterate (as mentioned above)..

now that would be nice  8)

Even if you encrypted your bike I'm sure it would *still* get stolen ;) Only, they wouldn't be able to ride it ;D

Hey man, nice review.. but I feel I had to read 3/4 to actually know what the program does..
Maybe at the beginning you can put it's purpose and what it does instead of burring it down below,
cuz I know a lot of people won't even bother to go as far as I did to see what it's about..

Yeah I remember learning mind maps in secondary school (or brain storming), lol.

I guess IRC would be a non-programming tool that I use for programming, possibly.. no actually a web browser too

I have been using Comodo Firewall for about 5 days now and it hasn't given me any problems. I guess nudone that it's one of those problems that happen to people because of there setup - installed things, maybe hardware, previous installed things, etc.

It's quite annoying to be 'a (bad) statistic' when trying software/anything when you hear so much good stuff about it.

From what I can say of trying Comodo Firewall the last 5 days is that

it's very light on system resources - the interface/program it self is very fast (which doesn't look like it at all since it looks like it uses a heavy skin)

it's defiantly not for newbies - this is for sure.

it's really different from Outpost (which I like) - Comodo Firewall, is just a firewall - it does not have any plug-ins, so some one using Outpost may not like this if considering moving over to Comodo (or at least trying it), that is of course if you like the plug-ins at all and use them.

Any way I haven't really played with Comodo as much as I should before considering using it from now on. Guess I should do that very soon.

Maybe some type of referer checking is done or some thing.

edit: yah looks like it does some dynamic generations or some stuff like that, remaps the extensions or some thing..

Yo mouser that's a wise decision.. If no body is ok with your decision then too bad.. Clearly a lot of people benefit from your applications.. seems only logical to reward your self for such quality work, yeah yeah yada yada
