When I check the box in General Options to "Start automatically when Windows starts" I get two entries in the same Startup folder. I can consistently reproduce.

I got it to go to the full width of the page by isolating the section it was in. I actually needed to do it twice because there were two embedded sections. However, I too had weird characters replacing some of the text.

Developer's Corner / Re: XULRunner - XUL & JS For Desktop Applications
« Last post by tinjaw on October 09, 2008, 07:42 AM »
While I haven't tried it, I do plan on using XULRunner for at least a small project sometime soon, especially as its easy to use Python while doing so: Python XULRunner Application

Just yesterday I exercised XULRunner from my Someday/Maybe list because I don't want to do Yet Another Framework. I am trying to concentrate on using Python exclusively so I can get better at it.

Then you post about this. Something I hadn't yet heard about.

 :-*

(XULRunner + pyxpcomext) is now on the Someday/Maybe list

Living Room / Selectively Print Only What You Want From Webpages

I'm @ work and too busy to write more, but I'm sure you folks can fill in the details in the replies to this post.

http://www.printwhatyoulike.com/

It is a very cool free web service that allows you to print only what you want from a web page along with several excellent options. Think of it as FinePrint for the web.

I cringe every time I have to deal with any form of customer service. They almost always *appear* or *act* like total idiots. I'm sure this ain't true, but experience seems to show they are.

Today's latest...

MySpace

1. Yesterday I delete/close my account.
2. Today I get the MySpace Newsletter.
3. I send them an email complaining that I don't want the newsletter.
Yesterday I closed my account and today I am getting the news letter. I don't want to get the newsletter because I no longer have an account. However the fine print at the bottom of the newsletter says that I need to login and change my preferences to stop getting the newsletter. How am I supposed to log in to change my preferences when I just closed my account. Please remove my email address from any newsletters or other promotional email from your company.

thank you,
chaim

Mouser,

I think they might be open to you talking to them about doing some "co-branded" stuff. Something like "Lifehacker Software powered by DonationCoder". We could create a special section in the forums and offer to host the discussions around the stuff they need built. It would be good cross-promotion for both sites.

Living Room / Should I Stay Or Should I Go -- A Social Networking Dilemma
« Last post by tinjaw on September 24, 2008, 03:19 PM »
Yesterday I started trying to update all of my social networking sites. It is proving to be quite a horrendous challenge. I have come to the conclusion that it isn't worth all the effort to do it.

But then a second dilemma occurs. Do I outright delete me accounts (on Facebook, MySpace, etc.) or do I let the rot away without the necessary gardening required to keep them current?

I doubt I will outright cancel my accounts because they might prove usefull some point in the future, but I can't see going to each one and delete my current information down the the bare minimum acceptable to each individual site.

I am sure that, for specific purposes, these sites have been extremely useful to many people. However, I don't see these things as very usefull to me in general.

What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you have anything that might convince me to spend the effort gardening for potentially hours each week? The obvious answer is for me to decide to only maintain the ones that I feel provide me value for my time spent with them. What should I do with the rest?

I'm curious to hear the discussion that could follow.

It should be rewritten in Python and moved to Google Apps Engine.  :P

Thanks you two. That was what I needed. I donated to you some coffee/beer money.

I am going to be spending the next few hours working on a project. I will be searching the Internet for some tools to do some things I need, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to throw up a post here in case somebody happens to stop by the forums today and knows of some good tools.

I am moving an existing website to a "better" setup. I am creating a test server, production server, putting client-side files under FileHamster and server-side files under Subversion. Local web page editing will be via KompoZer and file transfer will be via WinSCP.

The existing website files include a bunch of junk. I want to point a program at the home page and have it download all of the files necessary for the site. I will then use only those files to start with. The rest of the files will be archived to CD and removed. I will then host only the downloaded files on the test server and I want to then run a broken image/link checker on the site to find and problems.

I then will set up Google Analytics for the site.

Additionally I want to find a web site/service that will email me if the site goes down and another to check all of the links/embeds and email me if any go bad.

I'm going to start working on this now. Any help with finding these things would be appreciated.

thanx,
tinjaw

It is a matter of policy. I am not allowed to run executable that aren't installed on the computer by the IT department.

There is nothing other than poicy stopping me from doing so. I can take a USB stick with and exe and run it just fine from a technical perspective.

It looks like I am limited to bookmarklets with IE. I miss my Firefox extensions. :-(

Thanks for confirming what I already thought to be the case. Namely, you get what you get with IE and nothing more.

The ray of hope is that we might get commercial internet drops at our desks in a few months. That means I can use my own notebook computer connected directly to the Internet. IF and When that happens.
339
Sorry but portable software is not an option for me. I cannot run anything from a USB stick on the work computers.

Otherwise I wouldn't have posted this question and would be running Portable Firefox.  ;)
340
Due to work being work and government work on top of that, ignorance and bureaucracy have prevailed and I must (temporarily, I hope) use IE exclusively at work.

I live inside Firefox at home, and up until now, also at work.

I have memorized a bunch of hotkeys and run dozens of extensions that I pretty much rely upon on an hourly basis.

My question to the forum is...

What are the "must-have" addons/hacks/extensions/workarounds for IE that will make my IE experience much more productive?

I would like some serious answers, please, as this is work-related and I am not just doing this for the fun of the experience. Thank you for your kind assistance in this manner.  :D

I guess I should add that I only have standard user privileges on a Win XP Pro box on a Windows Domain, so I cannot install any EXEs. It is my understanding that IE7 has something similar to Firefox Extensions that can be added by regular (non-privledged) users.

FYI: I downloaded and played with the trial version of Advanced CSV Converter I mentioned earlier in the thread and it looks good. It is easy to use and does what it advertises.

Something like this could be really useful too for generating RSS feeds manually etc.

FYI, ListGarden is an easy way to create RSS feeds manually.

That reminds me that I need to update my mini-review of Dr. Explain. Stay tuned.

Carol,

I haven't any experience with it, but spotted Advanced CSV Converter on the Iconico preview email today. It might be what you are looking for.

A Hassle-Free Way to Convert Your CSV Files
If you’ve ever had to input information into a database, then you’re probably familiar with CSV files. Databases use CSV files because they’re an efficient way to store large amounts of data using relatively little space; however, you occasionally might find yourself wanting to convert these files into more convenient formats.

With Advanced CSV Converter, converting CSV files has never been faster or easier. It can handle a host of formats, including DBF (Dbase III, Dbase IV, Visual Foxpro), TXT, HTML, PRG (Clipper, Foxpro), XML , XLS (Excel), SQL, and RTF.

Although some converters can be tricky to use, Advanced CSV Converter uses an intuitive system that makes conversion a breeze. It simply plucks all the data out of the CSV in question and turns it into a nice list of data fields, ready to be saved to a multitude of formats. Best of all, the program operates via a step-by-step wizard, letting you monitor every step of the conversion process.

I have returned to this planet called Earth after a long journey. I shall attempt to get to this soon. It will make for a nice "break" from the chaos of my normal life.  ;)

J-Mac,

I have had zero problems with Locate32 after using it for, oh, I don't know, over a year, and on dozens of computers. My only guess as to why you have problems is that you are not updating your index. Locate32 will only show you files in its index. That index needs to be updated. I have mine set to update every night and sometimes update it manually when I know the machine will be sitting idle for a while.

Do you have Locate32 properly configured to update the index?
347
I can post more specific instructions if you need, but I would either,

* run a LiveCD version of some linux and enable samba
* run something like Damn Small Linux (DSL) and enable samba
* run a router distro with a samba packaged added and all other services turned off

Skrommel

Thanks again for this Skrommel. This runs on my laptop 24x7.

I just found PrismaCards and it's Windows Mobile match MCards. You can make the cards with PrismaCards and then use the Leitner system with MCards.
