General Software Discussion / Re: SRWare Iron 5.0.380 beta browser
« Last post by sajman99 on May 10, 2010, 02:19 PM »
could be my mouse but other browsers do not have this behaviour. anyway i found this Smooth Scroll extension and am gonna see if it helps.

Yes, there seems to be some issue with newer SRWare versions and Logitech mice.

With the older portable Iron 3.0.197 there was no issue, but with portable Iron 4.0.280 my mouse movement was seriously impaired-- to the point Iron was completely unuseable.

I now have both the older and newer portable SRWare versions running smoothly on my system. Can't comment on any issues with this latest beta.

Unfortunately, I'm not exactly sure what change I made to "fix" the mouse issue. Strange as I know this is gonna sound--try running Iron in Sandboxie to see if there's any change in mouse function. All I know is it worked for me.

Here's another adblock Chrome extension--Blocker. It's currently in beta stage, and it's based on Fanboy's Adblock List.

I'm using AdThwart extension with defaults.  Seems to block most popups except for the one on SRWare site itself.

I just visited the main SRWare site. Popup, what popup? ;)

Check out Fanboy's Adblock List if you really want to make SRWare Iron fly.  :-*

You may want to copy the original adblock.ini to another location just in case Fanboy's config file doesn't suit you. I've had no issues whatsoever--seems to work flawlessly.

btw on my computer Iron won't launch without an existing file named "adblock.ini" (whether original or modified).

The offer of Bulk Image Downloader for $19.95 has been extended. For how long I cannot say--the Antibody Software site doesn't currently indicate how long the offer will last.

If anyone missed out last month, now you get another chance. 8)

General Software Discussion / Re: Anybody Know About DiskTune?
« Last post by sajman99 on May 06, 2010, 02:09 PM »
majoMo, you're probably right that DiskTune is good enough as is, without any updates. But (at least on my dual core system) it runs very slowly-- so much so that I haven't really bothered to thoroughly test it. If the author could somehow boost the defrag speed it would become a much more attractive defrag option.

You're definitely correct about Puran Defrag--I switched to its free version some while ago and am very satisfied.

Curt, I seriously doubt you intended any offense, so what gives? I'm guessing the quote is a Monty Python reference? ;) Or what?

But I guess I'm just cheap. :-[ I mean, I can't really see paying for software to tell me my stopwatch was off by a few seconds.

Isn't Bootracer freeware?

Yep, BootRacer is free for non-commercial use.

Initially I was thinking about a commercial license for $19.95, but decided against it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  :P

For one computer I don't see the need.  If you are a sysadmin with a computer farm to manage then something like that may be a good tool.  What is the obsession with nano-seconds to boot? If it comes up clean so I can get a coffee that's what matters to me.  If you have to keep reconfiguring stuff or installing stuff and you end up in a rebooting cycle all day then I can see it.

For one computer what's so difficult about using a stop watch?  Unless it takes so long you fall asleep and forget to stop the watch?

;D Maybe make sure you take a few gulps of that coffee before turning on the machine. ;D

... it sounds to me more like ha14 is asking for a tool that verifies that whatever uninstall system one has used has worked properly and temp directories etc. are clean...

Oh, well sonofagun. ;) I thought he was asking about temp cleaning, junk files, history lists, etc.

Well, CCleaner can do a non-aggressive registry cleaning which removes leftover entries which uninstalls sometimes leave behind. See, I was on the right path all along...I think...maybe...kinda...sorta... :D

Well, I think that will be difficult to realy calculate the booting time with a stop watch, in my opinion an accurate numbre can be obtained only with a good software. Since some can also keep a log file so that one can look deeper for configuration.

You're likely correct that software would provide a more precise measurement of boot time, but hey--a stopwatch works OK for me. ;D

But I guess I'm just cheap. :-[ I mean, I can't really see paying for software to tell me my stopwatch was off by a few seconds.

For basic Windows file and registry (MRUs only) cleaning, I prefer Nirsoft's CleanAfterMe--tiny, simple, and portable.

Less frequenty I'll use CCleaner for a more thorough cleaning. Piriform keeps adding features, and you can get a portable version if you want.

I just saw where Sunbelt Software (VIPRE Rescue) and Malwarebytes (MBAM) have partnered in a joint venture.

http://vipre.malwarebytes.org:
If your system is infected, you need the most powerful combination to clean it. Best of all, through this partnership between Sunbelt Software and Malwarebytes, all the tools you need to scrub your PC clean are free!

Ah, free is good. 8)

Looks like it's been over a year since the last release. The author has noted DiskTune is a sideline/hobby project, but I really hope he continues development.

There's some pretty neat stuff in this free defragger, like the VSS safe-mode feature and online MFT defrag.

Also, the DiskTune help file has some of the most straightforward info on defrag that I've been able to find.

Thanks for telling, joiwind. I've got a free XML editor named XML Marker

It's basic and easy to use, and it hasn't been updated in several years. But it's good enough for my limited needs.

Greetings putnum/Adam. Recommended anti-spyware apps were recently discussed in this thread.

As noted in that thread, MBAM and SAS are well regarded anti-malware tools.

Another worthwhile tool is SpywareBlaster, especially if you use IE. It's a set-and-forget app which blocks ActiveX based baddies.

btw it's definitely worth using a temporary email service to avoid spam which often results from a "free" offer such as this one.

For example, trashmail.net and jetable.org are two such email services which help maintain a spam-free inbox.

At $39.99 for the full Pro version, I would hope the "boost" is more than marginal. :-\

So you guys are indicating this isn't smoke and mirrors, but it's in fact a significant performance enhancement? I admit skepticism, but I'm also curious.

Exactly, why ruin a good thing? :D

Anyway, nice work on your apps--keep on keeping on. :)

To follow up on my positive comments about BID customer support, I remain very impressed with its developer Dominic Dumée.

I contacted him last week about a minor issue I had with BID's "Download Selected" behavior, and I just noticed he has addressed my concerns by adding a new Advanced Config. option to the latest beta v3.10. Also, "improved flickr support" is noted on that beta page.

Over the years I have received many "Thank you for your email" auto-generated stock responses, so I can really appreciate solid customer support like Dominic provides.

If you go yourself and download photos from Flickr's, they will be named like "4462087835_dbcfe775b5_o.jpg". But with BID they will all be auto-named with their proper "photo title" by "photographer's name" names!

Nice, and if the user encounters a site which scrambles file names with alpha-numeric gibberish, the user can enable the "Generate Filenames" (GF) option to both rename and ensure the correct image sequence is preserved. The GF option alone has saved me many hours of aggravation.

So BID allows you to download images and keep them in the correct/preferred sequence. 8)
