General Software Discussion / Google Chrome + download manager?
« Last post by brotherS on March 13, 2010, 05:48 AM »
Hi,

(what feels like) ages ago I used Firefox with an extension (if I recall correctly) and the download manager FlashGet. On a webpage, you could do things like press some hotkey or click something (not sure, it's been a while...) and then it would automatically grab all the linked files of a specific extension from that page.

Is there some solution like that for Google Chrome too?

I couldn't install this here (on Vista), the installer tried to download additional software and failed with that - and aborted without an error message.

I'm now using the (free) MP3 Skype Recorder (v.1.9.0), see https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=17171

I like it!

Only used it (MP3 Skype Recorder v.1.9.0) for a few test calls on Skype, but it worked nicely. Hint: leave the "recording mode" setting to "Mono".

The only other free alternative I could find - Call Graph, see https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=12967.0 - wouldn't install properly here.

UrlSnooper / Re: who would URL snoop a page for me?

Thanks skwire!

Someone else was a few minutes quicker than you (and decided not to post here). I might ask you in the future, should I ever need another URL.  :)

Screenshot Captor / SC v2.78.01 bug: umlauts (öäü) in page titles
« Last post by brotherS on January 02, 2010, 04:31 AM »
Hi,

I saw that the v2.78.01 (and possibly earlier versions too) has this bug: an umlaut in a browser page title is not correctly put into the file name on capture. Example: capturing a web page called "Müde" results into "M_de 001.png"

Hi and a happy new year! :)

Who would URL snoop 4 links for me? I tried many times to get UrlSnooper to work on my PC, but without success...

I'd prefer if you are also a long-term user of this site who I can trust.

Screenshot Captor / Auto Move Older Screenshots suggestions
« Last post by brotherS on January 01, 2010, 08:12 AM »
Hi,

I got to know about this feature when SC suddenly started to re-arrange my files! :D

I started to like it, but I suggest these features:
- allow to specify the folder the files are being moved to (Screenshot Folder and Tools preferences) instead of just using "OLDER"
- as an alternative to have SC create sub-folders in the "OLDER" directory, have an option to just move all files in that folder (without subdirectories)

More general suggestions:
- allow the user to use the ESC key to close the Preferences window (especially if nothing was changed)
- if SC is already running in the 'tray' and you run SC again, make SC open its GUI (as if double-clicking the 'tray' icon)

General Software Discussion / Re: how to kill / restart Google Chrome?
« Last post by brotherS on October 13, 2009, 07:20 AM »
You can use Process Explorer, also from SysInternals, instead of Task Manager. In Process Explorer, Chrome has a "parent" process and each opened tab appears as a "child" process of this "parent" process. You can completely kill Chrome by killing the "parent" process. There is also an option, "Kill the Process Tree", but it seems it is not necessary in this case.
Thanks guys! I used the Process Explorer ages ago, sounds like that could work.

Before I test it (and lose some or all of my opened tabs - I'm using Chrome's "open all last opened pages again on program start" feature), would anyone be so kind and test it for me?  :)

I tested it and it works. The last tabs that were opened are restored. When I open Chrome, it detects that it was not shut down properly, and gives you the option to open the browser with those tabs. I'm using version 3.0.195.25
This is the solution! Works nicely!

Thanks for your help!

General Software Discussion / how to kill / restart Google Chrome?
« Last post by brotherS on October 07, 2009, 10:50 AM »
Hi,

I really like Google Chrome, the only thing I couldn't figure out is how to quickly kill* / restart it... since it uses lots of processes (to prevent itself from going down completely when a tab freezes) I can't just kill one process like I could with Firefox.

Any ideas?

I won't become a fan of hers any time soon, but she got courage, I like that.

Ok, I'll test Ditto - thanks! :)
341
Wow, sounds interesting! :-) Are you planning to add a search function?

I'm currently using ClipX, but since it sometimes stops adding clipped text to its history I'm more or less searching for an alternative. But I need a search function.

Personally, I found that want to be the biggest problem when it comes to information overload.

After finding no perfect solution for a long time, I took the radical appraoch early 2009 and cancelled ALL of my magazine subscriptions, stopped the daily news check online, and now only get the biggest headlines from a national radio station which I listen to while preparing food. I still read articles online, but much less than before.

Saves money, trees, and 'head space' - I love it! :)
343
Since I'm on a news diet I won't use your extension, but thanks anyway! I love Chrome and am looking forward to how it will evolve in the future. If GMail is any indication, there's quite something still to expect!

N.A.N.Y. 2009 / Re: NANY 2009 Release: Trout (audio player)
« Last post by brotherS on July 03, 2009, 04:46 AM »
It's by design.  What is happening is that, on a track change, the focus is set to the listview (and, consequently, away from the play/pause button).  I did it this way so that you could immediately use the up/down keys to move through the list.

Edit:  brotherS, the easiest way to solve this is to simply add a "Space" local hotkey for the Play/Pause action in the Options dialog.
Ah, ok.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did that, and (only after closing and restarting Trout) it seems to work smoothly now! :)

« Last post by brotherS on July 03, 2009, 03:25 AM »
I found a track change-related bug regarding keyboard usage, here's how to reproduce it:
- load/create a list of files to be played
- play a file and hit TAB until the the pause button has focus (press the space bar twice to see if it works)
- now wait for Trout to jump to the next file
- hit the space bar again... and you'll notice that it stopped to work

Thanks again for Trout!

another freeware with the same function: Dead Pixel Buddy...

Description

This is a dead pixel test program. It allows you to easily test your LCD screen for dead pixels.
(see attachment in previous post)
Thanks for the pointer, I used it to quickly test a TFT for dead pixels. Easy to use.

Hi,

is it possible to set an external TFT's brightness etc. with software? External = connected to a notebook. Is there freeware for this? Other recommendations?

Or do I HAVE TO use the TFT's menu?

Why I ask? I find that at night I need the screen to be less bright, and it would be a hassle to switch it twice a day manually.

I'm afraid that email is gone forever... along with my Outlook Express installation from 'back then'. I don't even know which of my gazillion email addresses I used when I registered... that's why I asked for an 'alternative solution'.

Since my old system died I didn't use Ad Muncher (or any ad blocker) on my new system, maybe because I didn't frequent sites with very annoying ads so much. Now I want to install Ad Muncher again - I can still access the files on the old HD, is that enough to 'import' the registration?

And I had some really interesting conversations about Ad Muncher with someone from this site, if I recall correctly he knows or knew the guys behind it. Would that someone please PM me? I'm not sure who it was...

Ad muncher is cool.

Yes...cool enough to have the development pace of a glacier.  ;D

Of course, with global warming, glaciers are gradually disappearing  :(
And they are picking up speed (while melting away)! Good news for Ad Muncher's development pace? :D

People not properly visible are c-base inventory ;-)

Mind the uber-stylish DC/c-base cup in front of brotherS :D

:o Whoever that was, it was not me! I was neither in nor even near Berlin.
