I have heard Purplus http://store.purplus.net/downloads.html has the cheapest prices. They have boxed versions too. All you need is a valid key, rest is nothing or junk.

Be careful about 3 pc vs. 1 pc license. Must have latest version regardless of brand or you end up paying for upgrade. You know of course renewal is cheaper than a new license, even at Kaspersky estore.

I think there is some important information value in the fact these 6000 samples are 15-20 years old, and the Avast guys reply was that unless they were ancient sample he would be very interested in seeing them Which means he know there is a difference. Considering how they struggle with current malware we can hope sacrifice has been made for a purpose.

No Network shield just sits there. Only reacts to their black list. I think what I have read and misunderstood is that firewall has option of adding own domains, may be whole lists/hosts files. Don't know but would be cool. Pretty sure an Avast guy said url blocking was going to be moved to firewall though. Could be months ago and they changed policy at some point. Well it works but how big and updated black list is for free version is I don't know. There could be a difference. With security software that will typically be called "enhanced blocking of malware domains" If you see comparison page free version does not protect against "high risk websites" or "Lets you safely browse suspicious websites or applications" that is url blocking they refer to so I don't know. Not many details about features.

5 is clearly better than 4 in most ways I can think of. More features too. How can he ruin that? I think 5 is just more of the same user friendly Avast marketing but with the difference that they now have better products to sell. Suites will always appeal to people and Sandbox is a very strong Pro feature. They are alone to have that for both 32 and 64bit? With all new shiny stuff they had no reason to cripple free version. Is still AV enough for most but own marketing like comparison page will of course be sure to make paid versions look better. They could not do that before because they had no products to "back it up"

I think Symantec dude was hired to move Avast up in Symantec, Mcafee etc. class. Now they compare products, line them up, encourage you to go Pro/Suite - same old trick AVG has taken to new levels. "For on-line shopping and banking, upgrade to avast! Internet Security." must be there

They also run a pretty active blog now. Even the beta was approved to be in Google pack. More aggressive marketing perhaps. "Get Chrome with Avast" also counts http://blog.avast.co...t-and-google-chrome/

Sure it does http://www.avast.com...ivirus-download#tab2 but if you want to be almost 100% certain it really really works then wait a week or so. There could be minor bugs like Lashiec might have run in to. Last beta was tested by over 1 million so... more like used due to bundling with Google Pack but at least Avast feel confident.

Only feature that does not work is boot scanner. For now only 32 bit.

Run Mcafees uninstaller http://service.mcafe...ent.aspx?id=TS100507 after add/remove session. Or run it instead, not sure what is most correct. Either way, Mcafee must be completely gone.

Sounds like good old web scanner mess. Avast Web Shield has been one of the better though. Conflict with firewall or other part dealing with net traffic. 99% chance you see similar problems at their forum.

Well may be they have made Avast 5 free for business and just forgot to edit FAQ and design web page http://support.avast...e&kbarticleid=36 License stuff has not changed. Those with old keys can use them in Avast 5. So businesses who bought 4.8 Pro should throw it away and go Avast 5 Free since it is better and now legal? Or wonder about what they have been paying for now everyone get it for free? Would not go down well.

Avast 5 is not free for business or anything smelling of business



URL blocking is now in the firewall or Internet Suite. Doubtful if anyone used it but how about Avast? Is 2010 but blocking IPs is still a very effective way of protection against web crap. Why Malwarebytes now have IP blocking for example. They can't keep up and mainly focus on what is not covered by normal AVs already. So useful it must be a premium feature. Avast is not like AVG but of course they need arguments for users to jump at Pro or the Suite. Good deal as it is.

Another new feature is password protection of settings. Perfect for those who look after family computers They get UAC like prompt if they feel like tinkering.

Speaking of excluding notice they have Firefox sessionstore.js excluded per default. But only work if profile is in default folder arrangement.

*\firefox\profiles\*sessionstore*.js

for me that is no good since I don't have a firefox folder so must change to

*\profile\*sessionstore*.js

Is profile and not profiles. Don't know why. Since Firefox is a problem why not something else? May be wise to check their forum next week or so.

Can't find that balloon pop up there was in 4, letting you see what was scanned in real-time. Now only "last file scanned" under each shield.

Think I read 4.8 will auto-update to 5 but not right now since they need to have servers in place. What "exclusively on download.com until 22. January" means I guess. Or is that promotion? May be an attempt to play it safe as it must be easier to recover good relations with a handful of millions than many If you have set 4.8 to ask for permission for update program then you can refuse. Don't know how long they will support old version.

If anyone is wondering why they list "Green computing" as a feature pic show why Like the opposite of MSE. After a full scan there is hardly any activity regarding files on hd. I have not changed/tweaked any of the open/write/read settings, not yet. I wonder about the difference in battery life between MSE and Avast 5 on laptops/netbooks.

I was searching for this not too long ago. Went through all entries at HotScripts. Not much to get excited about. Read that phpMyFAQ is the one to use. http://www.phpmyfaq.de/ As you can see from forum it is far from dead and unsupported http://forum.phpmyfaq.de/ Many entries at HotScripts are half-dead if not questionable, probably idiotic to use anything not updated due to security issues.

Google was not of much help either. An area which goes payware when quality is good I think. Some random people from hits said well why not use a wiki? May be. I have no use for any, was just curious.

I was playing with the idea of setting up a WP site actually. For Wordpress there is only 1 I think. Faqtastic http://faq-tastic.com/ Lite version is free but 35£ for Pro is almost necessary. 1 time fee, no annual nonsense. If I were to pay for that I would like to see some activity regarding WP 2.9. I am sure it works but I dont like last update was 6 months ago. Good he is on twitter then, very active too. But strange that he hardly ever speak of his plugin! Except:

Unless FAQ-Tastic is just a hobby for him when he is bored he have had plenty of time to test. BS to me. They release dev. versions, betas, RCs for this reason. This could show "risk" of paying up. Payment details he gets 1 point for, updating as in making sure plugin is here in working condition "forever" he get 0 point for. Looking for cool HotScript entries spells out question of x being alive or not.

There is a programm called AppRemover dealing with getting rid of security stuff http://www.appremove...pported-applications not compatible with your setup I think but shows your problem is common.

Last way out if something is broken could be a reinstall, then try again.

Site up again. Strange there is no talk of UniBlue, Dealio on their forum. Or anywhere on their site it seems. Comforting - but you can see there is a hefty 60% of a sale if signing up as an affiliate. Important to inform about.

I checked a download and Dealio is gone. Now double registry, driver nonsense. Uniblue in program and iXi/Plimus outside I think progress but there need to be a new term like Free with strings, Free with affiliate deals, Free with toolbar and search hooking or something indicating why X is free. Anvir might not even be that interested in paid version! Free version could be more valuable to them. Perhaps also why it is not that limited.

I don't know about the GAOTD package but Anvir has stepped over the line with Dealio toolbar including affiliate links and weird landing pages in browser. Provided by a running searchsettings.exe Lots of sex links it seems! And don't forget direct links to UniBlue Registry/driver/boosting crap inside of program. If you use some blocking service like DynDns Internet Guide you might not even be able to reach their site since it is blocked. Will not say that is hysteric or a false positive. Such not overly transparent methods must be avoided. Good program so annoying...

Strange that Nirsoft is clean http://www.browserde...om/site/nirsoft.net/ normally triggers any AV. At least as "potentially unwanted/risky". He has written about FPs on his blog. Encourages users to write and complain but I also think he hints that unless you are MS (SysInternals) they don't care.

Browser Defender is part of PC Tools I believe. Also included in LinkExtend http://www.linkextend.com/ so must have some popularity and besides some people will follow warnings without checking.

Well you are right and wrong   f0dders point is probably not dismissed by Mozilla. Why make it easy? What are pros and cons? With the extremely stable Firefox and the extremely detailed and useful bug reports you get from public? Massive public now everyone can go click, click.... I almost forgot one more  

There is no such thing as "going back" if you research and wait to jump on the train until sure major disasters are unlikely to happen. In theory at least. Wait... then install. That is my approach anyway and why I for example have have not yet tried 3.7 nightly. Not really interested. But check Mozillazines build forum which is the place to investigate daily bugfixes, what is "hot", and get links to Bugzilla where details are chatted about. There is risk Gmail don't work too well 1 day. Not likely but possible. Must be aware of the "risk" involved and that you basically ask for it. File your report if not done already. You are a little "developer". You service them. But you are right it is only for the very interested and I totally agree with that setup. They are very careful. With 2x% marketshare what else should they do. Even build 1 of a candidate to become RC! is still "developers" corner. Imagine the damage if something evil is overlooked and they go crazy on front page with if you can't wait for this new puppy go crazy right now! They can't afford that. Majority look at Firefox like they do IE. There is no room for troubleshooting or "fixing". It works or it is crap.

They also say Profile Manager letting you run a "stable" 3.5.7 and tons of experimental "builds" on the side is a feature mainly for developers. If you go BAH!, and you should, you have no problems with 10 different Firefoxes Even running side by side. Can't remember which but there is an extension letting you flipflop between different profiles, shortcuts works just as well.

Have you tried Flash 10.1 Beta 2? http://labs.adobe.co...ogies/flashplayer10/ There are benchmarks showing how fantastic it is. You will need latests drivers for video card and I guess benchmarks are mainly about video, hd and what not. Not sure how much difference you will notifce else where. I have had several crashes with this though less than on Beta 1. Think it has more to do with certain flashcode here and there than plugin itself. No crashes on Firefox, or only few, since I mostly use IE to watch video on other screen - why I think website code. Can only say it feels faster

Not difficult to find if you are interested enough Once installed autoupdates activates every day for a new "build".

From Mozillas point of view problem is not so much shaky code (with Firefox?) since official RC release most likely will be exact match but that Softpedia and others often give direct links to ftp server. Something about server load balancing stuff not kicking in properly. More important with release of final builds. Once links "are out" they spread fast Those who can't wait know where to get Firefox anyway so only a question of being first and get attention. Also why they now feel a need to offer Firefox extensions, most popular ones of course.

They do not follow "new profile and all is solved" logic. Can be tricky. Disable what is not obviously needed usually works. Besides that I think they cover everything. Firefox can get into its own problems, not screwing up profile with crappy add-ons and scripts is what you can do.

So there is also "personalized search" filtering besides the regional one I think always is active. Also why you can say SEO is dead!, even the good type. You cannot "promise" top x position anymore or there are more than one Google. New left sidebar is also there to help doing better searches. Perhaps because Google realized only few know shortcuts or use advanced search page. They show sign of being aware of problems with old default and old habits.

Of course Google can do more but those new initiatives show that end result is up to you. You can not just punch in broad keywords and expect greatness. Google would be useless if they did not have the info you need. They probably do so find it   They get bigger and bigger, not worse and worse.

Recently I had a little debate with a moderator on a security forum. Talking about blocking stuff, even cookies. He was naturally paranoid. So cool to block all ads and stuff. Then crappy site become great! Anyway, their site/forum show Google ads which are targeted "security" "malware" and such keywords. Also means quite a few of them leads to malware!, definitely not recommended products. My point was they have no moral, policy or concern of users and are in bed with the same forces they supposedly fight. I said it nicer though. If even aware of this Google connection (they block own content) is a pill to swallow in order to get revenue. Did not go down well but Google Ads (sister to searching) is one of those things you do not discuss   is like electricity you use, water you drink. No questions asked. Power of Google sticks a lot deeper than black hat SEO idiots and how close Google are to weeding them out. More about what benefits who like so many other things. "How to monetize?" is not just interesting for the bad guys.
