When restarting Win 10 after the last update, I noticed that the taskbar clock showed while restarting, but disappeared or was suppressed when done. My best guess as to what is doing this is Classic Shell. Anyone else have any experience with this problem or have fixed it?

Check your DClock2 settings, under Options>Tray Clock and make sure Hide Clock isn't checked. ;)

It's for people that don't want to be scared of their desktop.  :)

I loaded the folders on my taskbar, and have been doing this since the Win98 days:

General Software Discussion / Re: So, what pdf reader app is your fav?
« Last post by app103 on August 16, 2015, 12:29 PM »
When needing to insert or delete pages, or change their order, or combine multiple PDFs or images into one PDF file, I use the software that came with my Cannon printer/scanner.

But just for viewing PDFs, I use Foxit, except for a few bus & train schedule PDF files, for which I grab the latest version via a bookmark and view in Chrome.

I can also confirm that this corruption does NOT happen with a small portable USB drive on the same USB ports. It's oddly just CF and SD cards via a reader.

Good thing the only card reader I have that supports CF cards, also doesn't have drivers for anything newer than XP, which is one of the reasons why I won't upgrade one of my PCs. (I still have some old devices that use CF cards)

Were you on regularly?  I would just be surprised if you paid for content and there wasn't a migration plan put in before 4/30.

Just because you make the effort to notify everyone and offer a migration plan, doesn't mean that people will pay attention to their e-mail, see it, respond to it appropriately, and in a timely manner.

I work for a company that attempted to migrate their customers from one old platform to a newer, better one, that sent out multiple notices to all of their customers, with a link to click to migrate their old purchases over to their new platform.

Years later, and I am still dealing with having customers emailing us to complain that their old download links don't work any more, having to look up their old purchases in an old system we no longer use (except to look up old purchases of those who never migrated), creating vouchers to import them to our premium service where customers can just login whenever they want and download them again & again, without having to pay again or worry about losing old e-mail receipts with the download links...

And having to toss files related to discontinued products in Dropbox for them to download, because they waited so long that the old outdated books are no longer available in our voucher system.

Those of you that have a lot of computers that will require updating and don't want to end up capped or throttled by your ISP while updating them all, should be thrilled that there is a way to configure Windows to get the updates from computers on your local network that have already received the updates, thereby saving you all that bandwidth.

How can this be theft of bandwidth when you have this great new option that you never had before, that can actually save you bandwidth?

Or would you like to go back to the old way and get throttled by your ISP for excessive bandwidth usage, for updating all those PCs?

BTW, I wonder how long these daily pop-up 'buy AVG ads' will continue to appear.
It's no biggie, but they seem a little persistent. :) (see attachment in previous post)

Just consider them your daily notification that AVG is running. It's when you don't get a pop-up in the free version that you should worry.  ;)

@app103:

Yes, we visit this lady once a month and cook her a meal and eat with her. On those visits I will go online by tethering my cellphone to her PC via a wireless dongle. I can then update antivirus definitions. Avast is configured for manual updates only.

338
Have you given any thought to how Avast will be updated, without an internet connection? And have you disabled it from attempting to automatically update? (I'd hate to see her annoyed with popups telling her the definitions are out of date and end up in the habit of just dismissing any and all messages from Avast.)

I have a HP LV 2001 monitor with the resolution set at 1600 x 900 (recommended) and the text size set at Medium - 125%. The Win 10's monitor is a non-widescreen Dell set at 1024 x768 resolution and the text size is 100%.

Ahh.....That's probably the issue and why you are having the problem with it on your Win7 but not Win10. (If your Win7 was set at 100% instead of 125%, DClock would probably behave itself). This won't be a problem in the next version. I promise. (And you are going to LOVE the way I plan on fixing it  :D)

Dclock2 runs in Win 10. My Win 7 has to use Dclock 1. Maybe that is because it is a 32-bit Win 10. The Win 7 system is 64-bit.

Thanks for letting me know.

But I find it odd that you can't run Dclock2 on 64-bit Win7, since I have been running it on my 64-bit Win7 without any issues. I am not saying there is no issue on your system, just that it can't be due to it being 64-bit. Trust me on this, if there was an issue running it on 64-bit, I'd be the first to complain about it, till I fixed it.  ;)

I do have plans on rewriting it from scratch early next year (got some interesting stuff planned for it), so perhaps the new version will work better for you. Can you hang in there till then?

Have you considered braces of any sort?

Something like this during the day, so you can still do stuff.

And more heavy duty and restrictive, like this, for at night when you are sleeping.

Also, there is a technique I used, when I didn't have a vertical mouse, that lessened the amount of time I spent with my hand in a palm down position.

Make a fist or cup your hand and rest it on top of your mouse, like you were holding onto an invisible joystick, and move your mouse around that way. Only grab the mouse like you normally would, when you are ready to click. That will keep your hand in a more natural "handshake" position for a lot of your mouse usage.

There may also be some autoclick utilities, that will click the mouse if you stay in one place for a few seconds, eliminating the need to move your hand out of the "joystick" pose, unless you need to right click. I can't recommend one for you to try, though. Your mouse software might even have the feature already, so check there, first.

I think Win 10 all over is ugly, and the least ugly part is the ugly taskbar notification area!  :-[

 (see attachment in previous post)

If I didn't know any better I'd think you installed Win 1.0 instead of Win 10. What a step backwards in icon design!

She would probably enjoy the top 100 books from Project Gutenberg: https://www.gutenber...rg/browse/scores/top

She might like my clock, which can be configured to be high contrast and quite large, for easy reading: http://appsapps.info/dclock2.php

FSL Launcher might be good for her, if you set it up with the tabs and shortcuts to the apps, files, and folders she would be using: http://fsl.sytes.net/launcher.html

For some games that don't require quick reflexes and won't rush her with timers:

Jigsaws Galore Free edition: http://www.dgray.com/download.htm
I have a much older, full version of this one, and it's great for anyone that likes jigsaw puzzles.

One of the best freeware single-player Uno games I have ever found: http://www.lupopensuite.com/db/uno.htm
Full description, screenshots, and a review, here: http://uno-freeware....ftware.informer.com/
One note I don't think they mentioned, is that no matter how many players you select, it's still a single player game, you vs 1 or more AI players.

Game Top has a ton of free casual games.
They do open up a link to their site when you finish playing and close the game, but that would be simple enough for her to close.

About 100 different hidden object games. (these are always a big hit with seniors)

Chess
Checkers
Texas Hold'em Poker
Dominoes
Backgammon
Minigolf
Bowling
Lots of puzzle & match 3 games

web browser pre-configured with bookmark toolbar of useful pages?

It might be a good idea, even if she isn't going to have internet access, to perhaps save some pages for her to view locally, static pages that contain handy reference info.

How about a 'crust of Pascal devs'?

They're usually thinly layered on top of a deeper substrate, often older and fragile if stressed, but quite stable if left alone.
 ;D

Reminds me of one of my favorite IRC quotes:

<mouser> app is coded in combo of php and perl
<mouser> plus a delphi front end gui
<mouser> and she runs quite well and reliably
<mouser> except if you try to organize her with gtd
<mouser> then she crashes with giant memory fault

^app103, I am now running AVG free, and already seem to be proving out your xlnt advice with fewer and milder crashes. Many tnx! (:
 (see attachment in previous post)

Just passing on some of the best AV advice I ever received for an older PC.  ;)

Here is an additional piece of advice: Stick to the free version and do not buy the paid version.

The paid version will likely come with a bunch of extra features that will defeat the whole purpose of switching to a lighter anti-virus. If you don't have the extra features, you won't be tempted to turn them on.

Two police officers responding to a domestic disturbance with shots fired arrive on scene.
After discovering the wife had shot her husband for walking across her freshly mopped floor, they call their sergeant on his cell phone.

"Hello, Sarge?"

"Yes"

"It looks like we have a homicide here."

"What happened?"

"A woman has shot her husband for stepping on the floor she had just mopped."

"Have you placed her under arrest?"

"No sir.  The floor is still wet."

That must be an old joke. These days, they would just shoot her, without stepping a single foot on the wet floor.
