Well, you knew it was coming:

Would it be possible to take netbook, netvertible, tablet, or similar device, load OpenStreetMap (or some other pc-loadable map+software) onto it, put it in your car, and use that?  The benefits would be the ability to use decent processors and the ability to tweak things just like you like.  Good?  Possible?  I did some initial research and didn't see much out there.

... give me the basic jist of what was going on.  Here's the most recent version thread:
http://www.light-all...lloy_v4_5_build_519/

It would be good to understand Russian, but https://www.hostedre.../issues?set_filter=1 is a fine place to begin. Less to translate to understand, yet it tells most of what you would like to know.

Nice find!

Yeah, yeah...I'm just thinking out loud, sorry.  I'm not really suggesting anything that you haven't thought of at this point.  I'm positive whatever you figure out will work fine.
3229
Yeah, personally, I wouldn't rely on any folder or file names and/or structures for this kind of thing.  It needs to go by the tags.  You can't help it if people don't use the tags the standard way.  I'm still looking for a good way to organize my classical music using the standard tags.  It's tough.  I've been trying different things for like 5 years, nothing has been satisfactory.

mmmm...sooo nice to have 40hz back!
That reminds me...my friend's super hot cousin is now available...
3231
Thanks Stephen!  Great suggestions and review.  I have very big hopes for this in the near future.
3232
So what happens when there's like a tribute album with several artists, and each artist is named as the "artist" on their track?  How does AP know the difference between that and a bunch of different "greatest hits" albums?

It doesn't.  That's what I meant in an earlier post when I said that various artist albums aren't currently handled.  There are a few methods that could attempt to handle this but the original poster didn't request it so I never added it.
OK, I see.  If I think of a good way to do that, I'll post it.
3233
Maybe all of you need one of those programmable keyboards that gamers always like!  Then you can do all sorts of funky things with that based on your preferred hand position, workflow, etc.  I can totally see myself doing that sometime.
3234
Agreed, there are a bunch of different scenarios that could occur so, at best, anything you do will be imperfect.  However, to give you peace of mind, Album Printer does handle "different artist with the same album name" issue.  It combines the artist name with the album name and uses that to compare against its list.  So, in other words, "Artist_A - Greatest Hits" is considered different from "Artist B - Greatest Hits."
Yes, i think I can tell it's doing that already.  Very nice.  I want to throw some weird examples at it, but I'd have to do it at home where my files are.  I haven't tagged anything for a while.  I use to be borderline OCD about it.  So what happens when there's like a tribute album with several artists, and each artist is named as the "artist" on their track?  How does AP know the difference between that and a bunch of different "greatest hits" albums?
3235
I'm thinking about the various artists issue.  I'm going to run into that also.  But it depends on how people tag these files.  I would think that most people have the "album" tag the same for an album with various artists.  Now, how do you deal with all the different names under "artist"?  Well, one thing the program can do is if it detects multiple artists for the same album name, it can assume that all of those are together, and either say <various> in the artist cell, or actually list all the different names (but that might be long and ugly looking).

The problem with that is the situation where two different artists name an album the same thing.  Especially with stuff like "Greatest hits".  So, in a case like that, maybe the program can THEN check to see if the files are in the same folder.  But then what if you have the folders split into 'Disc 1" "Disc 2"...so the folders will be different, but it's really the same album?  ugh...this can get complicated.  but not impossible!  i can do this...give me time.
3236
skwire, you are da man!!
I love this program.  Let me tell you my history with this issue:
Before the days of good desktop indexers (Google Desktop, Everything, X2, Copernic, etc.) it was very important for me to catalog the mp3 files on my computer.  I eventually settled on MP3 Collector, which was great at the time.  Since then, it has stopped being developed for the most part.  The BIG complaint with MP3 Collector was that it would export a list of the UNIQUE albums that you had.  It would give you just a list based on each mp3 file.  So if an album had 12 songs, there would be 12 lines in the list.  But all I wanted to know is which albums I have.  The developers always insisted the program wasn't meant for that because mp3 files are not physically grouped or whatever reason they gave.  They were basically saying they just didn't want to do it.  Then they said they MAY do it later.  Years later, nothing has happened.

The whole reason why i want this is because when I walk into a record store, I want to know which albums I have and which ones I don't, so I don't waste my time buying something I already have.  So this program is EXACTLY what I've been looking for.

The SanDisk Sansa Fuze works for me just fine, nice soundquality, long battery life, small, has a micro SDHC card slot, cheap and it is .... simple.  It is just a music player and radio; it does not require any special software. You can also find some accessories for it online.

Those Sansa things have a GREAT reputation.  I've heard nothing but good things about them.

rjbull, thanks for that information.  That article is good, I'm reading it right now.  I'm still not convinced about the whole wordstar thing.  Like, I don't get what's so great about using Ctrl-<letter> instead of the arrow keys to navigate through a document...other than Wordstar users who prefer it because they are used to it.  I get that there may be an elegance to it that combines simplicity, speed, workflow in a particularly useful way.  That's the part I'm not convinced of.  It's the same thing I don't get about people who love VIM, or the old Norton Commander.  I'm like, "Man, there are way better things nowadays.  If it's just a matter of assigning different keyboard shortcuts, just take another program and redefine the keys.  Wouldn't that be better?"  Anyway....

How's it compared with Potplayer?
Light Alloy been my favorite player for years now.  I made a big thread about a bunch of players here:
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=20880.0

Potplayer/KMplayer have more options than Light Alloy.  They also both can play pretty much anything you throw at it without needing to download additional codecs.  Light Alloy does NOT come with the codecs installed.  So why is it my favorite, you might ask?  It's because it's fast.  When you double-click on a video file in your file manager, I found that Light Alloy starts playing it more quickly than the other players.  It's just built for speed and simplicity.  There are enough options.

Potplayer is good, I've been trying it out lately.  But it's still definitely beta right now.  My biggest problem is the interface...there's no skin that gets rid of all the korean text.  I need english.  There were also a couple of other weird things about it that I don't remember right now.  It was buggy, also.  It gave me a lot of errors when I threw a variety of files at it.

OK...I think I found the one for me:
http://www.dealextre...details.dx/sku.22369
It's a no-name Chinese 7" device.  So far, I've read that it is great and is very quick and responsive in all ways.  Since it's not a big name, it sounds like it has a lot of ability to tweak and customize to your needs...I love that.  And i love that I'll avoid any of the bullshit these big companies are always trying to pull.

and yet another:
And right on top of the map was a damn Red Lobster ad, hiding the info I needed. Couldn't make it go away, couldn't see my map underneath. Let loose a stream of profanity. Then the light turned green, I began to move, the ad went away and I found I needed to be in another lane, but my moment in traffic to plan the lane change had passed.

Garmin takes the only safe moment to check your map away from you--the moment you are stopped. So the only times you can check your map are when you are in motion and should have your eyes on the road.

Who is the genius that came up with this garbage?

I knew this problem was going to be bad in NYC traffic. But this POS had me steaming before I even entered the city. Inside the Lincoln Tunnel, once again hoping for lane info to get to my hotel, up comes a great big ad, WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION, obscuring the directions I paid my $450 plus tax to have. I damn near caused an accident with the "tourist slowdown" needed to find the right lane in time to get there.

Once in the city, this thing was the very definition of useless, with ads obscuring the map every time I was at a standstill and able to look at it. When I realized I was going to be more of a problem to surrounding traffic with this thing than without it, I put it in my suitcase and went to electronics alley and got the cheapest Tom Tom on the shelf--$79.

The Tom Tom outperformed this POS Garmin in every respect. If you must have the latest and greatest advertising-delivery technology, you can bid on mine on ebay.

Another quote about the ads from the same amazon product page:
this is a compleate rip off i thought i was buying top of the line GPS unit, but no every time i come to a stop they shoot adds at my map.If I want to get rid of it I have to buy a new cable for life time trafic update. On the website of Garmin they talk about life time trafic, but not a word about adds ge I wonder why?? if you want to look at adds on your new gps buy this one and oh by the way the safty camera that comes on some times as a warning is nice but to get them all its extra as well I have waited for two months for the 2360lmt was told all orders have been cancled for at least another month. I remember when garmin was sate of the art now there in the add business as if i cant see enough adds while driving?

I just bought my wife a Garmin nüvi 1450T for her birthday and she loves it.
I'm debating between the 3790 model and the 1490 model right now.  The 2790 sounds good, but I HATE the fact that there are ads on it.  I'm actually shocked to hear that.

There are ads on it?  How so? ... Like, if you drive by McDonalds it whistles the theme tune at you?
If you go here, you can read about it in the 2nd review (it's a long one).  He says that it's designed to have a popup when the device is stationary.  It shouldn't happen while driving.  but the guy says it popped up while driving also.  he called to complain about it to Garmin, and they said it can't be disabled.  I find that extremely shitty.  Don't do that to your top of the line device!
3245
Thanks 4wd!  I couldn't find it!

OK...answer me this:
What's to stop me from using an unlocked Android device and loading some really nice third-party software for GPS on it?  Do nice third-party software exist?  Once again, the way I look at it, I just need some kind of operating system (android), a gps chip inside (should be on all phones), and a nice, configurable, little known software by a cool developer....maybe load some maps into it.  No?  That would be the ideal solution for me.

Well here's some VERY disturbing information about Garmin's 3790T, their $500 top of the line model:
OK . . . now on to the PROBLEM. This thing has POPUP ADS. Yes - commercial popups, like "Crabfest at Red Lobster" and "Best Western Rewards - Get 1500 points" and "Unlimited lunch $6.90" that pop up while you are driving, and take up screen space, obscuring the damn map. I called tech support, and they said that these are not supposed to pop up while you are moving, only while you are stopped. But these came up while I was driving today. Tech support says there is NO WAY THE POPUP ADS CAN BE DISABLED. Apparently it's built into the license with Navteq and will happen whenever you are receiving traffic information, and they cannot disable it. How is this OK? They don't mention it in the product specs, or on the box. I am paying hundreds of dollars for this device, and I cannot opt-out from popup ads?$#@!% Garmin seriously needs to get a firmware patch (or a hardware patch if it's part of the traffic receiver) out to allow people to disable this. The popups don't even have an "X" in the corner for you to press to get rid of them.
I swear, these companies can be such assholes sometimes.  A top of the line model that costs hundreds of dollars should NOT have any sort of advertising on it.  Assholes...there's just no other word for it.

Oshyan, you have some great points here.  I was thinking of trying to use a fancy cell phone with NO data plan (i.e. just the phone itself) load a nice GPS app on it, and use that to take advantage of the possibly nicer UI than a standalone thing like Garmin.  But I don't think that's even possible.  See, the problem is that these new phones offer way better experiences as far as touchscreen abilities, response times, etc.  From what little I've seen from the dedicated units, they are very slow...it takes a long time for things to change on the screen, the touchscreen controls are klunky, inaccurate, and slow.  The animations are choppy and lame.  So i really don't know what to do.
