General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox windows and CPU slow-downs and restarts
« Last post by tomos on October 23, 2014, 02:12 PM »
Yeah, Firefox has been a problem on win7 x64 here for a long time now. (And I gave up on PaleMoon x64 completely cause it just took over.)
Lately it's been very slow after startup, so I just leave it a minute or two.

I restart it every day - & also use Session Manager - you can set it to show a list of sessions on startup, your choice then which to go with.

@kalos,
in order for something to get implemented properly, you need people with a clear vision, and with a lot of enthusiasm - but you also need people who see the problems. Those are two different approaches: if the first doesnt take the second into account, you get a botch job; i.e. both approaches are necessary.
From a practical POV,
it doesnt really make much sense that you keep trying to convert those with the latter approach, to your enthusiastic approach.

What research says about cats they're selfish, unfeeling, environmentally harmful creatures - Vox
Why are cats so different from dogs in this way [responsiveness to owner's voice]? The researchers speculate that the difference can be explained by evolutionary history: dogs were domesticated an estimated 15,000 years ago, compared to just 9,500 years for cats. Additionally, it's believed that dogs were actively selected by humans (to guard and herd animals), whereas cats likely selected themselves, spending time near people simply to eat the rats consuming grain stores. This difference — along with the extra evolutionary time — could explain why dogs are so much more interested in responding to the human voice.

they miss out on possibly the most relevant difference here:
cats are loners, dogs are pack animals.
Dogs respond to their 'owner' as the leader of the pack (then again, with some owners, this doesnt quite work as it should...).
Cat's dont see you as an owner, nor as a leader.

« Last post by tomos on October 18, 2014, 01:55 PM »
hi xbeatle (I almost posted that with the mistyped xbeastle :-))

the zoom is only for 'preview' - if you want to resize the image:
in the menu under Edit, click Resize image or canvas

Resizing the canvas ("Expand canvas") would make a border around the current image, so you need to deselect that.
Hang on I'll make a screenshot - go with the options below.
"Preserve ratio" is important.
Then increase the pixel number as desired, or the percentage.

Screenshot - 2014-10-18 , 20_43_14_ver001.png

I'm not sure what the best "Smoothing filter" is here - you could experiment - but it is important to note that, as soon as you resize a screenshot, you will lose a lot of the quality/crispness of the image.

that's a lot better than I would have expected actually
3233
^I noticed that.
FWIW, I think it could also be just straight-forward enthusiasm.

@CoolCat26 either way is actually fine:
if you are associated with the company though, it is expected that you state that (and here, that's no disadvantage, the opposite often).
But, as you can see -
if you only post about one app in your first few posts in a forum, it, eh, creates the wrong impression...

PS are you going to write us a mini-review then ? :D

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: License Key
« Last post by tomos on October 14, 2014, 05:26 PM »
Just to clear the obvious out of the way - I presume this is what you attempted:

Instructions for using this license key:
  • Select and copy (Ctrl+C) the multi-line license key above
  • Open the "About Box" in the program of ours that you want to register (from menu choose Help->About) [or access via tray-icon context menu]
  • Click the "Enter New License Key" button
  • Paste this text it into the application and Click "Accept" [paste via Ctrl+V, or via button]
  • You can check or change your license status at any time from this About box
https://www.donationcoder.com/Keys/

I notice in that "Enter New License Key" dialog, you can also load it from a file - you could try that as a workaround:
create a text file with a .dat extension, and paste your license into it. Browse to the file from the "Enter New License Key" dialog. (Note: my license starts with *r1; and is paragraph length.)

I watched the video and wondered what was so entertaining about it... I found it amusing with the dog being all dressed up and stuff, but not especially entertaining. Until the end. Heh heh. Now I see what you were talking about. ;D

No - I'm just easily entertained :)
The end does make it, but I just loved that little twist on "that look you gave that guy, I wanna see, looking back at me".

I wonder if there's such a thing as a consumer model cafe con leche machine?  That's the only coffee I like to drink now.  The machines the restaurants use have an espresso coffee maker with a siphon that heats the milk.  They make each cup individually.
  • is that steamed milk then?
  • what, roughly, are the proportions milk to coffee?
(trying to figure the difference from a cappuccino)

There are consumer versions of those machines (most are expensive, some *very*); I make something like that at home with a traditional espresso pot and heat/whisk the milk (not too hot though, or you get that boiled milk flavour) - does take a bit of work...

Eels - Things the Grandchildren Should Know
- Very few artists write songs that have the same impact as a good Eels song do. Live version.
https://www.youtube..../watch?v=HZACwCFsjlU

interesting lyrics there...
Spoiler
I go to bed real early
Everybody thinks it's strange
I get up early in the morning
No matter how disappointed i was
With the day before
It feels new

I don't leave the house much
I don't like being around people
Makes me nervous and weird
I don't like going to shows either
It's better for me to stay home
Some might think it means i hate people
But that's not quite right

I do some stupid things
But my heart's in the right place
And this i know

I got a dog
I take him for a walk
And all the people like to say hello
I'm used to staring down at the sidewalk cracks
I'm learning how to say hello
Without too much trouble

I'm turning out just like my father
Though i swore i never would
Now i can say that i have a love for him
I never really understood
What it must have been like for him
Living inside his head

I feel like he's here with me now
Even though he's dead

It's not all good and it's not all bad
Don't believe everything you read
I'm the only one who knows what it's like
So i though i'd better tell you
Before i leave

So in the end i'd like to say
That i'm a very thankful man
I tried to make the most of my situations
And enjoy what i had
I knew true love and i knew passion
And the difference between the two
And i had some regrets
But if i had to do it all again
Well, it's something i'd like to do

General Software Discussion / Re: Recommend image comparison tool, please?
« Last post by tomos on October 09, 2014, 08:19 AM »
I bought Photo Supreme lately (formerly idImager).

I'm still trying to figure it out (have toyed with a couple but never *fully* used an image catalog programme)
It can show six images side by side via the 'Light box'

Screenshot - 2014-10-09 , 15_11_44.png

- in case you're wondering those images are identical (just copied for the shot)

  • zoom via mouse wheel
  • mouse-down => blow-up (to 100% - which doesnt work well for my usage - I prefer to zoom manually)
  • unable to move an individual image - more relevant when comparing multiple images of a view, as opposed to versions of one file
  • 'pan' using scrollbars

I checked out their forum and they seem to be quite responsive to requests, and there's a new major update out soon.

« Last post by tomos on October 08, 2014, 05:05 PM »
Then again, there's another Ludum Dare coming up in December which I'm planning to participate in. That's close enough that perhaps I could combine LD31 with a NANY 2015 release. Though honestly I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about that idea, either.

that's a good idea, I'd say (why not?)

Screenshot Captor / Right-click tray icon displays SC and taskbar menu
« Last post by tomos on October 08, 2014, 04:16 PM »
I actually noticed this before I updated SC on my laptop (Window 8.1 x64). Problem remained after update.

When I right-click the SC tray icon, the SC context-menu shows *behind* the taskbar, and the taskbar context-menu simultaneously displays on top.
Taskbar is on auto-hide.
No problem with other tray icons (CHS, FARR, CintaNotes, Dopus, Listary).

Previous version (I *think* it was 4.8.x):

Screenshot - 2014-10-08 , 23_03_40.png

latest version, 4.9.0:

Screenshot - 2014-10-08 , 23_07_34.png

the SC menu shifted a bit between versions but otherwise no difference.

I should come clean.  There was a problem introduced by latest smf forum update a few days ago; i just fixed it 5 minutes ago and was teasing you guys
So it should be working now.

hah, I was just going to report that it works fine in Win 8.1 (as opposed to 7 earlier)
