Post New Requests Here / IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
« Last post by nudone on May 28, 2006, 03:59 PM »
i'm about to describe something that has 'probably' been done already elsewhere - if so can someone please let me know what the program is called...

if not, then i think this is another autohotkey task - i'd have a go myself but i much prefer to dish out the DC credits to someone that can save me the headache.

anyway, this is my request:

i've a 24" widescreen monitor (which i seem to keep telling everyone) and i'd really like to make full use of it, well, as it's so wide i'd like to use it like a dual monitor layout sometimes.

i'd like to be able to drag a window to the left or right edge of the screen and after a short pause the window would resize itself to fit the right half or the left half of the monitor.

this could be extended so if i drag a window the the bottom edge it will resize to fit the bottom half OR some other resize.

this type of drag window auto resize could be extended further so that there would be specific areas along the left and right and bottom edges of my screen (NOTE HOW I SAY BOTTOM - that's just because i have the system taskbar and system tray at the top of my screen), these specific areas would act as the triggers to auto resize the window to preset window sizes and locations.

so, as an example, i'd drag my web browser to the left of the screen - when the mouse cursor reaches the edge of the screen i pause and hold the window title a bar a second or two then it auto resizes to fit just the left part of my monitor.

if i drag to the window and pause on LOWER left side of the screen then the window auto resizes to fit the lower left quarter - a similar thing would happen on the right hand side of course if i dragged it there.

the bottom and top edges of the screen could trigger several other window sizes and positions, say, drag to the top middle and the window centers and resizes to 1024x768 or whatever.

i think this idea could be extended further - these are just the things that occur to me straight away.

i know there are keyboard shortcuts for this sort of the thing that have been done before - which is great - i'd really like to have both features really: user definable keyboard shortcuts for the main auto resizes and mouse drag trigger borders too.

thanks for listening.

i'll do the four people no dollar binary repeat edit tomorrow.

any more suggestions, post them now and i'll read them in the morning before i start changing things.

i've made this new 'sliver'. everything looks okay in photoshop when i join the sliver to the main website image but are you converting these to .gif, mouser? that's the only thing i can see that might be changing the colour depth other than me uploading something that didn't match in the first place - which is quite likely.

ah, yes i see what you meant jgpaiva. the yellow area is indeed meant to be sunken.

anyway, here's a non shadow version with a bit of a gradient instead. and the non world forum with a few adjustments.

would it be wrong to use the non-globe flat earth banner for the forum along with the globe one for the website?

sounds like a good idea

whoops, sorry about the text, i was using it to get things lined up right.

mouser, not sure what you mean about a bottom black shadow - if you explain then i'll add it.

i tried putting a hairline black border around the entire banner - as this it what all the other boxes are like on the forum - the problem is you can't do this when using the 'sliver' image to tile the banner edge - so i scrapped that idea.

jgpaiva, i put the shadow on the left edge because i thought that's what you and Carol were recommending to do.

the shadow on the border is something that i'm now thinking ought to be removed altogether ???????????????????????

SMF supports "themes", that might be worth looking into... users can even choose their own theme. So, I guess the top X best logos could be chosen, and each logo could have it's own theme?

sounds kinda cool.

here's the latest 'world' version - i think it's the best so far.

i'm guessing that the colours can't be changed on the forum (as there wasn't a reply when i asked) - that's another reason with why i've gone with what has gone before, i.e. i've gone for the same colours in the original donationcoder banner. these don't actually match the rest of the site if we are being pedantic but it seems okay so far.

another problem is that i've been viewing these banners in isolation instead of how they will actually look when on the web page - the 3D issues you've both mentioned really do look odd now.

that's a lesson learnt - so now i'll be doing my tests with a dummy page in place.

i'll do the edits - most of what i've done so far has just been influened from what banners have gone before so 3D accuracy hasn't really been taken into much consideration.

the light source is coming from the top left for all effects by the way - even if it doesn't look like that for the cut out.

but i have to say now that i look at it the cut out shadow doesn't even look like a shadow - it looks like a weird grey edge.

i shall try a more obvious 3D banner later.

@nudone:  As long as you're editing, shouldn't the space come out between donation and coder?

@mouser:  Any change you plan to put up a page with thumbnails to make it easier to compare examples?

whoops. good point about the space. wasn't thinking straight.

you're right, tsaint, i don't really know the legalities - all i can do is repeat a quote from the link i provided. i suppose it all has to go court first (and i've also read that allofmp3.com is run by a less than ethical set of people in Russia so they probably don't fear the law anyway - might be rumour, i'm only repeating gossip.)

here's the quote from the link:

The site, run by MediaServices Inc., claims that it is completely legal in Russia because the music it distributes is licensed by the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society (ROMS) and the Rightholders Federation for Collective Copyright Management of Works Used Interactively (FAIR). MediaServices states that it pays licence fees "subject to the Law of the Russian Federation," and whether or not it is legal in other countries depends on local copyright laws.

"AllofMP3.com is not a legal service either in Russia or anywhere else," told Lauri Rechardt, head of litigation at IFPI, in an interview with OUT-LAW today. "Unlike all the legitimate sites, it does not pay artists or copyright holders so it is effectively stealing from those who create music.. Like most things that appear to be too good to be true, AllofMP3.com is not what it seems."

Regarding the claim of a licence from ROMS, Rechardt described ROMS as "a Russian organisation that claims to be a collecting society." He added, "ROMS has no rights from the record companies whatsoever to licence these pieces of music. ROMS and AllofMP3.com are well aware that record companies have not granted authorisation for this service."

here's the original article it's all from http://www.out-law.com/page-6956

i've had a closer look at lightroom and now understand that it's not really a replacement for adobe bridge, whether it is something i'd use instead of ACDSee i'm not sure.

if i was a professional photographer, or someone that had a lot of photographs (i mainly have non photo type graphics) then i can see the appeal of lightroom. it's going to have a very slick interface and just the right set of tools for dealing with photographs. no doubt you will be able to use it for all your image management needs for viewing and cataloging with the right file types.

is this the beginning of the end...

http://www.afterdawn...ews/archive/7591.cfm

i have to repeat that i still think allofmp3 isn't a moral way of doing business. i won't be sad if they were closed down - it would have been (or would be) a greater example for the Labels (money grabbing b*stards) if allofmp3 had been working under an ethical model, i.e. paying the artists directly. okay, i know i don't understand how that would be done but i would hope there is someone out there that does.

i've read that allofmp3.com proves that people will pay for material even though they could obtain it for free elsewhere, very true. it also proves that people will pay for material and not care one jot that the artists that created the material actually get paid for their efforts (i still can't really get my head around justifying this business practice - people don't normally buy goods when they know they are stolen and yet this is how allofmp3.com appears to trade. marvellous.)

i was expecting lightroom to be just a beefed up version of adobe bridge but from what Carol has mentioned it sounds like something that could well replace ACDSee for me.

if lightroom is going to work with vector images like the bridge then i'd be tempted to use it - if lightroom is going to be as quick to load as acdsee then i'd almost certainly use it.

i wonder how ACD Systems will respond to it when they bring out the next version of ACDSee?

i wonder if it might be possible to make the bottom left inset thing where page title is shown, into a fully "bordered" cutout (like rounded renctangle or elipse), instead of it cutting of the entire bottom left. does that make sense? i mean like still show a tiny amount of the left and bottom border of the banner like th right and top sides show? would that look good?

i think that would look okay if the text that goes inside it had the right amount of white space around it. i'll include it in the edits.

thanks all for the great suggestions, i think they are all excellent ideas - i will do a few edits later on today.

(i'd just like to say that i knew the dollar sign was going to become a talking point but i quickly accepted it as i thought of it as donationcoder is place that talks about the value of software - i wasn't thinking that the dollar represented a symbol for donations. i do appreciate that i had to invent that line of thought so it wouldn't really be the first thing that visitors would think of.)

oh dear, i've just checked how the banners work when viewed with the rest of the page content - i see there are some issues with my colours matching across the slivers.

i like the idea about the dollar in parentheses - i was expecting the dollar to be an issue so that's a good way around it.
