Living Room / What's a great dvd/bluray/everything player?
« Last post by superboyac on December 01, 2010, 12:40 AM »
My sister and her family needs a newer dvd/bluray player.  They have a very old one I got for them back in 2001.  I would like to find one that can play EVERYTHING.  Bluray, regular dvd's sure.  But also, data discs that have mp3 and video files (avi, mpg, mp4, etc.) on them also.  That would be awesome.  And if there are some bootleg players out there that are not region coded or anything, I'd like to know about those also.  I think I remember reading about them years ago.  I also remember there being some nifty off-brand players that were feature-packed and extremely cheap.  I'm interested in hearing about those also.

Most importantly, I'd love to hear about your experiences with such players.  What did you like?  What annoyed you?  I really have a strong feeling there's some weird chinese off brand thing out there that just plays everything you throw at it.  Thanks!

Living Room / Re: Five Reasons Why People Hate Apple

I don't know, Darwin.  I want to very respectfully disagree with you there. :)
I believe that the other companies can get away with charging high prices..IF...(big if)...the end result is as nice all around.  People will easily pay $700 for a tablet as nice as the ipad if there were not glaring issues.  The problem is that Apple has the head start.  The bigger problem is that Apple has all the hardware/software/OS being controlled in house.  They can fine tune everything to be just right and smooth.  Look what's happening in the PC world.  Android is not yet ready for the tablet form factor.  Windows is not really tablet friendly as far as resource use and just general UI.  I mean, Windows is much too hardcore for a tablet.  And all the hardware parts, can all these companies really work together to get the right balance of battery life, resource use, form factor...it's too much.  Sony has a hard enough time getting things right within their own company, let alone cooperating with others.

So in the end, we get competing products like the Galaxy.  It's essentially the same price as the ipad, but inferior in just about every way.  So now we have millions of ipad users, and a handful of other inferior products.  So there's a bunch of apps for ipad that work well with a large user base, and a bunch of android apps not really built for tablets, with only a few users using them on tablets.  There's such an uphill battle here.

A company like Sony has the most chance to compete.  They have the amazing hardware technology which is significantly superior to Apple's in my opinion.  But they have horrible UI issues, stubborn marketing, klunky features, and no motivation to innovate in a good way.  Look what they put out last year, the Sony Dash.  It's just about the stupidest device I've ever seen.  That's Sony for you.  A bunch of freakin morons with all the potential in the world right in their laps.

I tell you, God forbid Apple ever developing hardware technology as good as Sony.  When that happens, it's over for Sony.  They will have nothing left.  All of these companies better be afraid of Apple, because they are coming on strong.  If a guy like me bought an ipad, fighting every fiber in my body, then it's trouble for the other companies.

I've always wondered about certificates.  How are they useful?  What additional level of protection do they provide?  For me as an end user, it's been nothing but a nuisance.  But I don't know enough about them to criticize them.

haha...don't worry guys.  I'm not a fanboy.  I will say this:  for people outside of our circle here at DC (and others like us) Apple provides the best solutions for computing...by far.  Yes, they lock you in, but if they didn't, it wouldn't be simple enough for most of these people.  I've been thinking a lot about this...just downloading and installing programs from websites is a headache to the average user.  AVERAGE, people.  The little things that get on my nerves simply do not cross other people's minds.

Just to prove I'm not a fanboy:  if anyone ever shows me a comparable device, I will buy it in a heartbeat and get rid of this thing.  That means:
well-made (nothing cheap feeling about it)
Nice screen
Great multi-touch responsiveness
Lots of apps, lots of options (don't really care about the price if reasonable)
Minimal configuration, minimal problems

So, I'll be waiting.  Believe me, this was a pretty weird purchase for me.  I went to the store with my friend and actually paused outside the store entrance before walking in.  I took a sigh, shook my head, and walked in.  I know the ipad 2 is going to come out soon, and I will be angry.  I can already tell that certain things bug me a little.  BUT...there's no better option right now.

Well, I've been playing with my ipad for the last couple of days.  I've been pretty impressed so far.  It's a very well built device, with a great screen.  All the touchscreen controls are amazingly responsive, and I've been pretty happy with the few apps I'm using.  In a sense, because there are so many ipad users, there are a lot of apps for it, and you can usually find something you want.  What little I've tried using with Windows 7 tablets is not very nice simply because Windows 7 is not built for tablets specifically.  So it takes a lot of fiddling to get everything tablet-specific with regards to icon sizes, font sizes, multi-touch stuff (which isn't as smooth as ipad).

Now, I still have MAJOR beefs with certain things that are very Apple-ish.  For example, you have to wait for Apple to fix bugs and stuff related to their OS.  With Windows, I am used to finding solutions to problems immediately online.  So Apple's restrictions are both it's strength and weakness.  Sure, by Apple controlling everything (hardware, software, store, delivery, syncing, EVERYTHING) they are able to provide a very simple and streamlined solution to MOST users.  But people like me need to be able to tweak, to experiment, to do little things that are not common.  Like now, I can assign a specific function to the mute-lock slider on the side.  Apparently, before the latest OS update, you could use it to lock the rotation of the screen, which is very useful.  Now, it's used as a mute slider, which is not as useful considering there's another way to do it by holding down the rocker next to it.  So the end user can't choose to switch that function, until Apple decides to let you with a future update.  With Windows, you'd simply download some third party thing or code something yourself to take care of it.  This is partly why i may look into the whole jailbreaking thing soon.  So these little things are what makes Apple very annoying to people like us who use Windows very heavily.

Of course, there's no USB, which is kind of lame.  I have to pay for all sorts of adapters if I want usb or to plug into the tv, and they are all a little on the expensive side.  So that's a bummer, as usual.  Again, typical apple stuff.

But you know what?  None of the other companies have made any tablets nearly as nice as this one.  Do it already!  But it's going to be hard to compete with that build quality and that screen with the great multi-touch responsiveness.

So, this doesn't mean I'm an Apple guy.  Not at all.  My heavy duty computing will be Windows for a long time, I'm guessing.  My Windows Desktop is my computing headquarter.  There's no way an Apple device can do what this baby can do.  But it does take a lot of expertise and customization, which I am used to and good at.  But as a portable gadget, I'm very happy with the ipad and it is better than anything else I've seen out there.  I use it for great GPS, an amazing alarm clock, a great portable pdf reader, a decent music player (I haven't tried the video playing and tv out stuff yet).  It's really great for those little things.  But Apple will never be able to replace the hardcore Windows user and probably never will, because to do so, they'd have to let go of all their proprietary control over hardware/software/stores.  One company will never be able to do all of those things the best way.  Never.

« Last post by superboyac on November 28, 2010, 04:58 PM »
well, I just tried the GPS.  It works!  I'm using the regular Google maps/navigation that comes default on the ipad.  When I lose connection, it still works, as in, the ipad keeps track of my location.  The only thing that doesn't work is the maps, I can only use whatever is in the cache.  So I think I'm going to buy Copilot HD live app for this thing and use it as my navigator.  Very nice.  That's all I really wanted.  We can knock apple all day, but this ipad is a gorgeous device.

Yeah, i know it's expensive.  But I had to get it, long story.  I was JUST looking at car mounts, I don't quite understand how they work.  I'm looking for a car mount that will still allow someone to sit in the passenger seat, and somewhat retractable or something to put it aside when not being used.  I'm looking.

I still am not sure if GPS will work.  I'm looking for some free apps that will give me a clue whether the gps can work with wifi and data plan turned off.  I don't have a data plan anyway.

Well, it's working now.  I used my spare laptop as the guinea pig computer.  I'll just use that laptop for itunes.  I'm not installing it on my precious desktop.  Anyway, everything is fine now.  I have to say, I hate how Apple ties you into their network.  You can't really get out of it.  I'll look into those jailbreaking things, but the whole idea of it fights against my nature.

And off we go...Problem #1:

This is bad.  I installed itunes on my virtual pc running XP.  It worked fine, the ipad was unlocked and good to go.  Everything was good.  Then itunes asked to upgrade itself and also to upgrade the ipad to the latest ios.  So I did.  While the ipad was updating, at the point where I think it was actually implementing the update (as opposed to downloading, extracting, etc. it says stuff like that), well, I got errors on the virtual pc.  Then I got a hardware device installation notice in my tray on my host computer.  Then everything stopped working.  Now, my ipad is locked once again, and I can't figure out how to fix it.  I'm sure this is related to trying to do this all on a virtual pc, but I'm not installing itunes on my desktop.

Well, my expectations of the ipad are pretty skeptical.  But before I launch into negative comments, which are likely to come by the boatload in coming months, let me just say what is good about it:
It's a beautiful device.  I mean, it just is.  It's beautiful looking, it's a great size, it's screen is rich and just gorgeous.  The multi touch is very smooth and responsive: far better than any other multi touch device I've come across.  It's very elegant, both in features and function.  Sure, it doesn't do as much as a pc, and there are frustrating issues because of that, but for what I'm intending to use it for, it should be ok.  The mistake I made previously in arguing with myself, was that this is not going to feel like my home, desktop pc experience.  And I have to let that go.  I got this thing for reading, jotting minor notes, watching videos, listening to some music, and mainly, a GPS unit for my car.  I'm VERY skeptical that I am going to make that work well without a data plan, but I'm going to try.

I do have to emphasize how beautiful the thing is.  All competitors should take great notice at the elegance in Apple's products.  It's something special.  People were saying how inconveniently large it is...baah.  Nonsense.  It's not that big.  It's somewhere between a normal sheet of paper and a dvd case.  Great size.  It's not meant for the pocket.

I will be SUPER excited if the GPS works.

I will admit, I am afraid of itunes.  It's running on a virtual computer right now, and I plan to leave it that way.

Surely there are other more appropriate simple CMS tools for basic article-driven websites? Heck even Wordpress might be better...

- Oshyan
I've used Wordpress extensively.  My problem with Wordpress is that it is fundamentally driven by the blog format, which really just means it's governed by chronological order.  It takes a lot to organize your content in any other way other than chronologically.  And I hate that.
3217
I've been playing around with tomatocart the last couple of days, and it really is a great piece of software.  It's so nice, I was wondering if it could be used as a basic CMS tool.  Meaning, I could remove all the shopping cart stuff, and simply use its basic article tools.  I think that could work.  We'll see.

But as for an ecommerce website, this is looking like a fantastic tool.  Finally!  Thanks Stephen.

General Software Discussion / Any SIMPLE dvd audio ripping software out there?
« Last post by superboyac on November 22, 2010, 01:04 AM »
I have several really awesome concert DVD's.  I want to convert just the audio from these into mp3's so I can put it in my portable player and listen to it on the road.  I can't seem to find a good, simple solution for this.  Everything I've found (doom9, videohelp forums) is a complicated multi-software, multi-step procedure using a bunch of command line + gui interface things that is usually typical for this kind of stuff.  Do any of you know of a simple, one-click type solution for this?  This is the procedure I've used in the past:
http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/DVDAGuide
it works, but it's a bit much for me.

Thanks Oshyan.  It looks like it's going to be tricky trying to buy a Samsung tablet without the carrier contract.  But I'm not sure on that.  I'll go into the store tomorrow and see.  Such bullshit.  Man, I hate that so much.

I'm really glad to hear your Epic has decent GPS ability.  Could you possibly try it by turning off all the wifi and/or data connections, and tell me if you notice any weirdness?  That would be a really big help for me.  The Epic should be behave essentially the same as the tablet, it's just a matter of screen size, right?

Living Room / Re: GPS Unit Recommendations?

Yeah, that ought to work. It's a bit big (but not for a tablet), and more expensive than a moderately priced GPS (no contract price $600), but then you can do a whole lot more with it too. All the sales I'm seeing, besides the "international version" on Amazon (more expensive), are tied to a carrier though, even without contract. So I'm not sure if you'd need to sign up "with" a carrier then just not continue service, or what. I haven't looked into it much though. Just make sure you get the 16GB version instead of the 2GB. You'll need the storage space for maps!

- Oshyan
Good call.  yes, I do want the 16gb space for all those maps.  I'll look into the contract stuff and report back here.  Yes, anyone, please let me know if I am overlooking something about this.  I don't want to spend $600 to find out some little restriction that will make this all impossible.  There's always some little thing about this bullshit contract/hardware/mobile industry that makes things darn near impossible.

The good thing is that I've heard that the Samsung tablet has a pretty great UI and is a well built tablet.

I need to find the best forum for the offline GPS devices.  I'd like to see or hear about the response times, the features, the capabilities of what I'll be able to do.  Could I attach an external antenna to make it lock into the satellite faster?  I know that the lock-in time is going to be one of the "it" factors for me.  I don't want it to take more than a minute to lock in.  I also don't want slow refresh speeds on the screen as I'm driving.  I want it smooth and fast.  And I have reason to believe it can be.  The tablet is more than powerful enough to handle that kind of processing, and having the maps locally stored on the device should make the map movements as snappy as can be expected.  My suspicion is that I'm going to run into issues with the satellite lock-in times.
3221
Has anyone tried the new Adobe Reader X (10)?

- Oshyan
They better have put tabbed documents in it, or else it's worthless.
3222
Man, I've been really thinking about the different PDF viewers out there right now.  I'm pretty much convinced: PDF-Xchange is the best one.  I don't think it's really close.  It's really a very well done application.  Excellent.
3223
I can't believe how hard this particular thing is.  i want to get rid of the stupid rss feed and bookmark icons in my firefox addressbar, and it seems to be a suspiciously difficult task.  I'm shocked there isn't an addon or greasemonkey script that just does this.  The solution I've discovered is to go in your user folder and do some code changes to the userChrome.css file.  So, I don't really want to do this because it seems like there should already be a button or something that takes care of this.

First of all, why would firefox have a file like that with the word "Chrome" in it??  How is that not a problem knowing that their competitor is the Chrome browser from Google??  Makes no sense to me.  Whatever.

OK, how about this?
A Samsung Galaxy Tab (samsung's ipad competitor), which runs Android.  I'll get it without a data plan, put mapdroyd on it with some OSM maps, and I think that could make a kick-ass gps unit.  No?

Living Room / Re: GPS Unit Recommendations?

OK!  Her we go!
There's an app called Mapdroyd:
http://www.mapdroyd.com/
This can be installed on an OFFLINE Android device by downloading some files on your computer and transferring to the android device.  This means, obviously, no data plan necessary.  Yes!
OK, now what map software can it use?  Well, it can use OpenStreetMap, and if you pay for it, you can also use whatever Navteq and Tele Atlas are, which sounds like they are the maps used in Garmins and stuff.
Now, I need to find an android device with like a 7" screen.
