Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Babylon discount
« Last post by Curt on April 22, 2011, 11:12 AM »
just came in:

Dear Curt

Thank you for taking the time to write us.

My name is Sharon from Babylon Technical Support Team and this is further to your previous response regarding your case.

Internet Explorer 6 and 9,Google Chorme 10 ,fireFox 4 are not able to make Babylon work.
Our program developers are working on it in order to fix the issue.
Please accept our apology for any inconvenience.

Please download and install Internet Explorer 8 latest version to fix this issue:
http://www.microsoft...worldwide-sites.aspx
Downgrading from IE9 to IE8

1.Close all programs, click Start and click Control Panel.
2.Click ?Uninstall a Program? under Programs category.
3.Click ?View installed updates? option in the task pane.
4.Now select Windows Internet Explorer 9 shown under Microsoft Windows updates and click Uninstall and follow the instructions on the screen.

IE9 uninstall process lasts for minimum 3 minutes and you will be able to access Internet Explorer 8 as usual after restart.

Note:We recommend  users to create a restore point before uninstalling IE9 because whenever you want to try IE9 you can get it through system restore option in windows.

Please tell me, how it works.
If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact  me again.

 Kind regards

Thanks for coming back, cyberdiva ;-)

I merely meant that in theory I shouldn't need to pay for their next upgrade. When I keep saying "in theory", it is because deep down in my heart, I kind of don't trust them. Sad thing to say, but I have been their customer for most of a decade and I don't think they care about making the best program, they are merely in it for the money, so they keep upgrading for no other reason than to make you pay again. I don't see any improvement at all from version 6 to version 9, in fact I wish I have kept version 6...

I have no idea if any of them will run on 64-bits, sorry.

But I believe Babylon sure is going to upgrade to version 10, and so on, soon!

Edited: Only now I realize this is the "Found Deals and Discounts"-thread, but this post is not really about any discounts...
It's just that when you are in love, no-one can tell or imply anything 'bad' about your loved one...
-my "love" for Babylon has been cooling down ever since version 5 or 6 - I just haven't found anything better (and I have several of the kind). One problem regarding Babylon is ...

Still cooling further down...:

Babylon doesn't work inside Firefox 4 !!

we should also know about today's giveaway, http://www.giveawayo.../visual-search-pony/, Visual Search Pony. Photos and videos only. Slow scanning (disappointingly slow) because it doesn't just search for meta data but really takes a look at each picture, to compare content.

Edited:
I believe this is the only one also comparing videos?

The giveaway version doesn't set shortcut on the desktop.

M3 is approximately 100 kb and can be found in l.madhavan's software archive along with other minimalist/smallware apps.

Lately my Firefox 3.6.16 has become annoyingly slow to open pages, so I want to remove ALL of the old installation, before I upgrade. But of course I want to keep login informations like user-names and PIN-codes, for version 4 to use. How can this be done, please?

MozBackup will only save the entire user profile, which is the wrong way to do this.

Living Room / Re: HELP! Failed System Restore
« Last post by Curt on April 18, 2011, 12:30 PM »
System Restore not completing? This may help.

          If you have been unsuccessful in getting System Restore to complete and possibly have not received an error message informing you of why:

          1: Check your Security Software first. Programs such as Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm, AVG and many others. Norton has a Product Tamper Protection that must be turned off before running System Restore. Another issue is that you may have malware and or virus's that are stored in a Restore Point that you didn't know and the Security Software is protecting you from it being spread.

          Note: Not all versions of Security Software have blockers. I am not sure of which versions but there are so many, it's just a matter of finding your version and checking.

          2: Check for Malware\Virus that may be stored in the Restore Points. I use MalwareBytes personally but everyone has their preference.

          3: There may be a chance of an old program you uninstalled that has left a few files behind that may be interfering. Many Software makers especially Security Software offer Removal Tools. If you have software you have uninstalled and think it's still lingering, check their website\s and see if they offer a tool.

          4: Try System Restore at Boot using Command Prompt and see if this may work for you.
          Step 1: Restart your computer, and then press and hold F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in safe mode with a Command prompt.
          Step 2: Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode with a Command prompt option.
          Step 3: If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the appropriate operating system for your computer, and then press ENTER.
          Step 4: Log on as an administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials.
          Step 5: At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER.
          Step 6: Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to a functional state.

Applies to XP, Vista and Windows 7

General Software Discussion / Free anonymous web pages
« Last post by Curt on April 18, 2011, 03:16 AM »
From free download a day: http://www.freedownl...anonymous-web-pages/

Anonymous web pages

It's easy to write HTML code in any old text editor on your desktop. A little typing here, a little cut-and-paste there, and you're all set. But what is that page going to look like? Unless you've got a web server running on your local machine, you really don't know how that page is going to behave. You can upload your handiwork to a server somewhere, but then you have to give it some kind of memorable name and be sure to delete it when you're done playing around. Or maybe you can just publish it to a server that doesn't care.

pastehtml.png

PasteHTML is a free service that lets you publish anonymous web pages. You can do your editing directly in their online form, or you can write your code in your favorite text editor and then paste it into the form. Or if you're not so big on the whole markup thing, you can also use their online WYSIWYG editor, which lets you format your text without any of those pesky HTML tags. Either way, once you're done, you just click the button and your page is published. Now it's easy to see what your page will look like when you publish it for real, as well as making it easier to find that place where you forgot a closing bracket or quotation mark in your code.

PasteHTML is a free online service. You really shouldn't need anything more than a web browser to use it.

Adobe's PDF specifications

Adobe changed the PDF specification several times and continues to develop new specifications with new versions of Adobe Acrobat. There have been nine versions of PDF with corresponding Acrobat releases:

    * (1993) – PDF 1.0 / Acrobat 1.0
    * (1994) – PDF 1.1 / Acrobat 2.0
    * (1996) – PDF 1.2 / Acrobat 3.0

    * (2006) – PDF 1.7 / Acrobat 8.0
    * (2008) – PDF 1.7, Adobe Extension Level 3 / Acrobat 9.0
    * (2009) – PDF 1.7, Adobe Extension Level 5 / Acrobat 9.1

The ISO standard ISO 32000-1:2008 is equivalent to Adobe's PDF 1.7.
Adobe declared that it is not producing a PDF 1.8 Reference.

PDF 2.0

A new version of PDF standard is under development under the name ISO/NP 32000-2 - Document management—Portable document format—Part 2: PDF 2.0 (as of January 2011). Adobe has submitted the Adobe Extension Level 5 and Adobe Extension Level 3 specifications to ISO for inclusion into the next version of the ISO 32000 specification. BM-productions has a list of small but very useful freeware programs for Windows. I use several of them myself.

frames, one link only: http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/

Windows Media Player Plus!  [ Invalid Attachment ]

-just updated:

BM-productions | SmartClose | Windows Media Player Plus! | WMP Tag Plus | WMPCDText | WMP Import for Winamp | Downloads Context Menu

Windows Media Player Plus! includes the following enhancements:

      Tag Editor Plus: an alternative for Windows Media Player's Advanced Tag Editor (screenshot). Tag Editor Plus works on Windows Media Player 12 too, where the original Advanced Tag Editor has been removed.
    *

      Global hotkeys, allowing you to control Windows Media Player from within any running application.
    *

      Party Shuffle: a dynamic playlist, that automatically gets filled up with randomly picked songs. Of course, you can still add songs yourself, and reorder/remove songs, just like with a normal playlist. Very useful while throwing a party, as a DJ aid, or just for casual listening.
    *

      Real 'find as you type' in the library: you can simply start typing to search, without having to click on the Search field first.
    *

      Access the standard Explorer right-click menu of a media file directly from within Windows Media Player (screenshot).
    *

      Restore last active playlist, media item, and playback position at Windows Media Player startup.
    *

      Show currently playing media in Windows Media Player's title bar (screenshot).
    *

      Advanced playback options: Stop after current and Close after current, to automatically stop playback or close Windows Media Player when the current media has ended (screenshot).
    *

      Let Windows Media Player play/pause when you press the space bar.
    *

      Disable group headers in the Library Pane (screenshot).
    *

      Enhanced and configurable replacement of the Windows Live Messenger Music plug-in (What I'm Listening To) (screenshot).
    *

      Access the properties/settings of any Windows Media Player plug-in from within the main menu (Tools - Plug-in properties), without having to go to Options first (screenshot).
    *

      "Play next" option when right-clicking a media item in Windows Media Player 11's library (Windows Media Player 12 already has this by default).
    *

      Quickly re-enable all plug-ins after a Windows Media Player crash (screenshot).

Windows Media Player Plus! is written for Windows Media Player 11 or higher.

Comments, questions, problems, bug reports etc. can be posted in the Windows Media Player Plus! thread at the Hydrogenaudio Forums.

I am not sure how MtTPlus is doing its job. To me, it seems like it is putting a one-time-only link in Start every time FF closes. Can you find a link to FF in "Start with Windows"? If so, in this new link, (?. I don't use it this way myself), you will see that MtTPlus has written -turbo as parameter (for Vista). If you add a space and then type -tray, Firefox will start minimized to system tray / notification area. This screenshot is from my Startup Delayer:

Thanks a lot for the link to your page. I will of course go and have a thorough look, but right now it is late night around here, and quite frankly I was only awake & up because I am an old man needing to go and wash my hands afterwards several times each night...

Hmmm...  I have X4, maybe I should consider responding to their e-mails about upgrading, as long as I can use a coupon.  On the other hand, I already have both Foxit and Infix...

I don't know what Usenet really is, so I thought maybe someone else don't know:

What is Usenet?

Usenet is older than the internet itself. Originally set up to allow academics and others in specialized fields to engage in group discussions with their peers across the globe, it has since evolved into an uncensored system of exchanging virtually anything that can be transmitted between computers.

Usenet functions a lot like email. Except that instead of addressing messages to an individual, they are addressed to a group. And anyone wishing to read or post messages in a particular group, does so by connecting to a Usenet server across an internet connection. A newsreader (ie.Outlook Express) is needed on the user’s computer to read articles and download attached files.

You “subscribe” to a group by telling the software in your own computer to check the messages in a particular group. (Don’t be frightened by the term “subscribe.” Nowhere is there ever a subscriber list. The term “subscribe” is used in reference to how you set up your computer and software. Only you and your computer know which groups you have “subscribed” to.)

There is no “central” Usenet server. Rather there are thousands of servers chained and crosslinked together in order to exchange articles between them, and to keep the articles available for their own users to read for a period of time ranging from hours to weeks. (It is this lack of centralization that has protected Usenet from the legal attacks such as that which destroyed Napster.)
-Usenet

Will someone please give Real Life examples to what Usenet is good for?  :tellme:
