Skwire Empire / Re: Birthdays (simple birthday tracking app)
« Last post by Ath on March 21, 2011, 10:09 AM »
* Double-clicking a birthday will now edit it.
Could a Double-Click on an empty spot be turned into Add birthday, instead of an errormessage? That's a bit more intuitive, IMHO

For the rest it's just steady as a rock

Nice find!

I tried it quickly on an invoice I received, and though the layout, when selected for most correct layout, is indeed a bit awkward to edit, it sure does look like the original pdf document.

Thanks.

I've released the Coding Snack I pledged for today in it's thread, over here

Please comment, so I can improve it further :)

Author Ath

Description
A command-line tool to convert Excel data into html like the Mail Merge feature of Word. Created as a resolution to this until now unfinished Coding Snack, during the March 2011 fundraiser event.

Features
Convert Excel data into 1 big html table (singlefile mode) or each row into a single html file, or multifile mode where the names of the file can either be based on row number of column data (multiple columns can be used), and each column can be output anywhere the html based template allows. Startrow and Maxrow can be set by parameters.

Planned Features
  • Remove the requirement of having Excel installed locally (involves rewriting in Java...) Now realized with v2.0
  • Filtering of data, if requested by users.
  • User request, anyone?

What's new
  • v2.1.0.0 2012-03-02, Ath
  • + Added 2 new tags for looping over all rows of the excel sheet (as defined by the -r/-s/-m parameters) (suggestion by DeVamp)
  • + Added an xml example for looping
  • * Readme updated for the new tags
  • v2.0.1.2 2011-07-27, Ath
  • + Added excel2html.sh after some testing with Excel2Html on Ubuntu linux (should be set to executable to run directly)
  • * Updated readme accordingly for some linux differences
  • v2.0.1.1 2011-07-27, Ath
  • ! Documented -sf parameter to enable ShowFormula, displaying [formula text] with the result of the formula (for testing)
  • + Added -dt parameter to Display all Tags supported in the template
  • v2.0.1.0 2011-07-26, Ath
  • ! Fixed issue with not handling formulas correctly, by replacing poi-ooxml-schemas-<version>.jar by ooxml-schemas-1.1.jar
  • v2.0.0.1 2011-07-26, Ath
  • * Improvements to the build scripts to automatically produce -nolib archive and publish.version archives
  • * Sets errorlevel to 1 when an error occurs, so the batch file can jump to a pause to keep the message in sight
  • * Sets errorlevel to 2 if something goes awry during processing of the Excel file to html file(s)
  • * Some minor source and javadoc improvements

Usage
Installation
  • Unpack the contents of the zipfile into it's own directory
  • Create a template with markers as documented in the readme file
  • Optionally: Configure parameters in Excel2Html.ini

Using the Application
Specify any not yet configured parameters on the command-line to Excel2Html to produce the html file(s)

Uninstallation
Remove all files from the computer

Known Issues
  • Date display is somewhat problematic, though usable

I agree on regexes being an elegant solution to many problems, that would otherwise could be difficult to solve.

ppl scared of any regex, posted their opinion, that I quoted (without the quotes, sorry) above, that's the pessimistic group. I'm not in the pessimistic group...

in one elegant expression
Agreed, but the pessimistic still complaint that: You have a problem, you apply/throw a regex at it, then you have 2 problems...

And what was the brand of the harddrive in that machine? A Maxtor perhaps? These disco's are known to get slower and slower after several years of use, though I've not been able to do any measurements on them

« Last post by Ath on March 17, 2011, 03:02 PM »
Well, I've been behind a proxy (here, at home) for over 14 years now, and that was just because my ISDN connection could be turned of and off by the proxy software, and I sticked with it because all my e-mail configurations would have to be changed again and again. And for the extra security ofcourse, as there's also a firewall on that machine.

Not sure if I can configure it to do the authentication without messing things up big time, here, but I'll try, just for fun, or set up something in VMWare 8) Will probably end up sometime next week, though (assuming you're ready before the weekend), got a busy weekend ahead.

That are the default 'Login credentials' pages of these browsers, so I'm afraid that JottiQ is going to need it's specific proxy authentication settings page :(

Ok, I'm working on another coding snack, that I can have finished & polished enough to be released on the 19th. No teaser screenshots, as it's a command-line utility.

Not that I'd buy an on-desktop-clock, for any particular reason, but I do like this Mini-review  But would I need a multi-timezone clock, then this would be a likely candidate.

Thanks Tim.

i don't even know why these tech articles focus so much on those stupid performance graphs anyway.

That's for good old marketing's sake: Bigger numbers are better, and they give great graphs to convince those manager types, deciding on what us, techies/mere users are 'allowed' to buy

Nice table of useful information that you added, thanks.

1 request: Can the column widths be saved? The window size and position seem to be saved, but all adjusted columns are back to default width when re-opening the view.

And do remember that Windows Vista and 7 have their own kind of defragger, to place applications and associated stuff in optimum locations, when it's idling.

Source: msdn blog
So many folks came to know that if your machine is slow you had to go through the top-secret defrag process. In Windows Vista we decided to just put the process on autopilot with the intent that you’d never have to worry about it. In practice this turns out to be true, at least to the limits of automatically running a process (that is if you turn your machine off every night then it will never run). We received a lot of feedback from knowledgeable folks wanting more information on defrag status, especially during execution, as well as more flexibility in terms of the overall management of the process.

A minor WinButtons update to 2.0.1

I've removed the restrictions of top and left being confined to the width/height of the main monitor. Any position checking should be done by the user, most of them are old enough 8)

Updated download in the original release post

Well, pending this discussion, I'm inclined to postpone the release of this add-on/plug-in thingy for a bit.

Comments welcome, as always.

Ok, so I'll stop searching for my old Win 98 Plus CD I thought I had laying around somewhere, seems I didn't keep it during one of the bigger clean-ups I did during the last 10 years
3222
I fully agree. A clear and concise write-up of how and why things happened.

Didn't get to read it completely yet, but I'll continue later.

I recently setup a virtual 98 and am wanting to find the games.
Do you have a special purpose for that virtual? I can't see much use for it, besides the quick boot-time on modern hardware, but usually more modern virtual machines, like those running WinXP, revive from paused state quick enough and have a bigger feature-set and matureness over W98. :-\
3224
Now you need a web page and a pad file so others can discover this.

The pad file I can take care of myself, but a site... If you could help out with that... :)
3225
if we could pass in the window HANDLE.
I can take care of that :P

Another feature request taken care of: WinSendKeys 3.0.3

Latest release & download moved to separate thread

The small changelog since 3.0.2:
; 2011-03-13, version 3.0.3
; * Improvement: A numeric WindowName is now treated as a WindowHandle (HWnd), as requested by mouser
