What is Handmade Hero?
Handmade Hero is an ongoing project to create a complete, professional-quality game accompanied by videos that explain every single line of its source code.
Is it a simple game, for teaching purposes?
Quite the opposite! The game design has been specifically tailored to require more complex code than exists in most game designs. Sophisticated procedural level generation, intricate item interactions, and globally propagated effects are just some of the many aspects of the game that will be implemented during the series.
Are the videos just recordings of someone coding?
No! Although 100% of the programming for the game is captured in the videos, each step is also accompanied by continuous explanation of what is going on and why. It is meant to serve as a de facto class on game programming.

I found another bug:

If I click Load directory for md5 checksums, then click Load Directory for files to check, it will add an extra \ to the path if I load from the root of a drive, and will therefore consider the file to be "new" instead of matching it to previously saved checksums.



And now that the GUI is disabled while verifications are in progress, this includes the scrollbar, which means if you are scrolled down (or up?) then you can't see the results of scans as they're happening, other than the status bar at the bottom of the application. It would be nice if the application would keep the most recent results on screen by scrolling the list automatically as checksums are verified.

Yeah, I added another section ("Work") and I can't tell which one is the current section. There is no indication on the screen. Except, I suppose, that "Home" has 2 entries and "Work" has 1 entry.

Another issue I've noticed is that when I create/verify a bunch of checksums, with some new files added to the mix, if I save the file, SFV Ninja doesn't "reload" the md5 file. So the files I've generated checksums are are still considered "new" and will generate/verify them again if I add more files and click the "verify new" button again.

Not only that, but if I verify a bunch of new files, then save the checsums to a md5 file, then load the md5 file, the files are all still considered new. I have to clear the list first, then load the md5 file before the checksums appear in the "saved checksum" column.

It would be nice if, upon saving the file, all the checksums would be moved over to the "Saved Checksum" column. This would prevent checksums from being generated repeatedly. I suppose this could be "faked" by just clearing the list and reloading the newly saved file immediately.

I've been using this again recently and I've discovered 2 (possibly related) bugs:

• If you clear the list while it is verifying files, it will keep verifying files. Or at least the one it was working on.
• If you delete a file from the list while it is still verifying files, it will not update the correct rows.

On that last one, what I mean is this:

Say I have 10 files I'm verifying. And it gets through the first 5 and is working on #6. But I realize I don't care about #4, so I click on it and press Delete. Well, now #6 is #5 and #5 is #4, etc. But when it finishes verifying the file, it will write the data in the 6th row.

Re. BTSync, having used it across both LAN and Internet I'd say it's fine if you only want to sync up to a couple of thousand files total.  I uninstalled it after using it for 12+ months because for 30,000+ files it was more annoying than it was worth.

I watched the video which just showed the base. It said you plug in your own storage. And the product page says you need to use your own wifi router.

The base unit costs $100 and doesn't include any storage, and as previously established, doesn't provide any wireless data transfer.

Since the 2TB device you linked is $350, that means they're charging $250 for a 2TB drive (and HDD "toaster" stand, I guess, enclosed in a sleek plastic shell).

So really the thing is just a doohickey that handles syncing files across your network. You still have to provide your own storage (or pay out the nose for their storage options) and you still have to provide your own wifi adapter. You can already achieve that same functionality with just about every device that you already use or carry around with you using BTSync.

And my guess is that it's not just "plug it in and go." You probably need to set up which files/folders to sync, and where to sync them, and install their special software/apps on all your devices.

BTSync has a simple set up process, you do have to set up your folders, and install the software/apps on your devices, and it will also sync across the internet using bittorrent technology (so transfers don't have to happen all at once or fail if interrupted). And I don't have to pay $100-$350 for it.

I guess I just don't see why anyone would use that thing except if they didn't know something like BTSync exists. I can't think of a single feature it has that is an improvement over BTSync, but I can think of at least a few areas where it is not as good as BTSync.

I tell you what, send me $30 and I'll tell you to just use the excellent and free BTSync to sync data across all your devices. You save $70 (which you can use to buy a TP-Link or Raspberry Pi or more storage) and we're all happy.

(My incredulity isn't directed at you, 40hz, but at the folks selling that thing at such a steal.)

Must not be a Samsung tablet then. All of Samsung's recent Android phones and tablets have Wi-Fi Direct implemented in them from day one. I know I should hate Samsung with all the TouchWiz and the glut of features that a lot of people call bloatware, but I got a Galaxy S5 because of the rave reviews of the screen and I just love all the functionality packed in there. Loved it so much I just bought a Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 for $199.99.

Loving it as well. I used to be a die-hard Samsung hater, too. What happened?

I suppose my tablet (Asus Nexus 7 2013) could have had WiFi Direct the whole time, but the option for it wasn't in the software until recently, or maybe I never noticed the option for it until recently.

Is it true that you can just backup your user directory/partition and then copy those files back after an upgrade. I've heard rumors to that effect about Linux distros, but never tried that, since I'm pretty much always using it in a VM and it's easy enough for me to simply wipe and reinstall.

I don't get it. My ISP will sometimes make little notices appear in order to warn me of upcoming outages due to maintenance, etc. Is that illegal, too? I don't see the problem here.
