The problem with VC funding is that it is an investment and the investor(s) are going to want a big return on their money within a certain period of time. If you can't do that, you end up having to shut down like TipJoy, or sell out like Friendfeed, iLike, and all the other startups that were bought up by bigger companies.

And if you think the founders get to keep the big wads of cash they get when they sell out, you are sadly mistaken, They only get a portion and the rest goes to the VC firms that invested in them.

The way DC does things isn't profit driven, looking to make investors or the founder into a millionaire.

DC was not founded on greed. That is the biggest difference between this site and one like TipJoy.

And that is why DC is still here.

And so what ?!! If I want make a search in google with the word "test", i can !!! Why not in a forum ? it's my problem what I'm looking for !!
-Whereismyangel (August 20, 2009, 05:15 AM)

That isn't an issue on this forum. You can search for "test" and get results.

The main reason why you can't search for very common words is because there would be so many results that it would overwork the server and probably bring the forum to its knees. If you want the forum to stay online, there has to be some limits in place to ensure that a simple search doesn't kill the site.

I think anyone that has ever been trapped on Wikipedia might tend to agree with this article.  :D

There is a sort of blogger's rule, which those new to blogging usually don't know about:

Never link to an article on Wikipedia, because once your reader goes there, he's never coming back.  ;D

Living Room / Are Gamers More Evolutionarily Advanced?
« Last post by app103 on August 18, 2009, 03:20 PM »
A new study suggests there is a correlation between video gamers, depression, and being overweight. According to the CDC, the average American gamer has a higher body mass index than his peers, and also tends to be more reliant on the Internet. Female respondents to the 500-person study, which was carried out in the Seattle-Tacoma area, had a higher correlation of depression than their peers.

Outlets like PC World and TG Daily have reported the news with appropriate caution, careful not to insinuate that correlation means causation. But the suggestion seems to be that there are only two factors at play--lifestyle and level of health--and that one of them has to be altering the other. Either fat, depressive people like gaming, or gaming makes people fat or depressed. But what if the real culprit is brain chemistry?

According to an article in Slate, part of so-called Internet "addiction" is rooted in an ancient brain mechanism that rewards discovery. Human beings, it seems, are engineered to reward themselves with shots of dopamine when they find something new, and the Internet has become a kind of dopamine drip--sites like Reddit and Digg, and the chance for new emails and texts, open up the possibility for endless "discovery" highs.

I am not sure why you would use a bookmarklet and Google to search a page you are on when CTRL+F would do nicely.

So they only email bomb you, not snail mail??

Snail mail bombing is too expensive for most companies, while email is basically free. And junk mail reply envelopes do have a useful purpose. They are great for grocery lists and hold all the coupons that go with it.

But if it gets really bad, send some of the junk mail from one company to another, using their own reply envelopes.

General Software Discussion / Re: Top Greasemonkey userscripts that you use
« Last post by app103 on August 17, 2009, 04:25 PM »
If you use Friendfeed, you probably know about this already.

One of our newest members, Micah Wittman  is probably best known for his great collection of scripts for Friendfeed, but recently he decided to take one incredibly useful one and branch out and support Twitter, Identi.ca, and Facebook, as well.

Translatorize is both a set of Greasemonkey scripts and bookmarklets that uses Google Translate to automatically translate user submitted content on those 3 social networks to your native language. It is capable of translating multiple languages on a single page, as well as on pages that normally wouldn't be accessible to Google Translate (non-public pages), and it can handle real-time content, too.

With these scripts, if everyone on those 3 networks uses them, we will all pretty much understand what each other is posting. I have seen conversations cross the language barrier in ways I have never seen before. Imagine a conversation between someone typing in Chinese, another typing in Persian, and still another in English, and all 3 people understanding each other, in real-time. I have not only seen it, I have been a part of it, and it's awesome!  ;D

Yes, there are the usual pitfalls that are involved with using Google Translate, as the translations are not always perfect or meaningful, and sometimes it "translates" things that need no translation, and sometimes the translations can be quite amusing, but all in all, this is one incredibly useful set of scripts that is likely to open a whole new world of social networking communication.

EDIT 11-24-2009: added mention of Identi.ca.

Living Room / All Wordy and Junk: A brand new multi-author blog
« Last post by app103 on August 16, 2009, 10:47 PM »
Let's face it, anyone that has ever tried to maintain a blog all by themselves knows, blogging is tough. Having to come up with something to write about on a regular basis isn't the easiest task. Not to mention all the other things that go along with blogging, such as promoting it and stuff. This is why so many writers just give up and abandon their blogs.

All Wordy and Junk was an idea conceived on Friendfeed. A group decided to band together to make a single multi-author blog. Figuring that the more writers you have, the less pressure you have to come up with something to write, lets the authors relax and take their time, putting forth their best work by only writing when they feel compelled to do so. With up to 100 authors (that is the max it will have) there will always be someone writing something to keep it fresh and alive.

'All Wordy And Junk' is the home for some bloggers who aren't that great at keeping up a blog on their own. We figured we'd band together and rely on everyone else to keep the content flowing when we had writer's block. Other than that, there is no theme here. Posts and topics will be random, because that's the way we like it.

I have had conversations and discussions with  lot of the authors of this blog on Friendfeed and they are an interesting bunch with a lot to share. I have a feeling this may become one of my favorite blogs to read.

Edit: added link to Friendfeed discussion where the idea was born.

Living Room / Re: Myer-Briggs Personality Test For Programmers (or anybody)
« Last post by app103 on August 11, 2009, 08:57 PM »
sometimes I think there's a distinct lack of ENFP's in the software world - working on GUI's at any rate . .

That's because normally ENFP's aren't regarded as being cut out for developing software, and there aren't many in the world to begin with, to work in any profession. I think the majority of ENFP's are attracted to professions like psychology and social work, where that "mind reading" ability really sets them apart and makes them shine.

There seems to be a bit of a pattern emerging here  ;D

Most coders I know are INTJ's.

If you stick an INTJ coder in the same room with an ENFP coder, this is what happens:

The ENFP loves brainstorming, sees the big picture, and will have the project planned out through v3, before any work even begins on v1. If the ENFP isn't careful, they might scare the INTJ and cause them to hide under the desk till the brainstorming session is over and it's "safe" to come out again.

The INTJ will do most of the difficult coding, with the ENFP doing the boring stuff the INTJ really doesn't want to bother with.

When the INTJ starts doing work on the GUI, the ENFP that can sometimes seem like they are capable of reading minds, only because they are good at understanding how people think, will notice the flaws in the design and how it isn't "mentally ergonomic".

All of the "idiot proofing" will be the work of the ENFP, because the INTJ doesn't understand and can't be bothered with idiots.

When it is time to write the help file/documentation, the ENFP will most likely write that because if the INTJ does it, only other INTJ's will understand how to use the application. If the ENFP does it, then your grandmother will know how to use it. Besides, INTJ's hate writing documentation, and ENFP's don't mind, in fact, they rather like it.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: McAfee again. Don't ask.
« Last post by app103 on August 11, 2009, 03:14 AM »
Oh, no. I was replying to April & didn't think quoting was necessary because I was posting right below her. She got rid of a PaintShop Pro plugin, a game, a program included with one of Mouser's program, and upgraded another program all in the name of keeping McAfee happy. I don't think I would have been so understanding of McAfee's inability to play nice with others.

Some corrections:

I got rid of McAfee about 6 years ago when I traced some odd system instability issues to it. I haven't used it since. I once thought my WinME totally sucked because it would either lock up or BSOD about every four hours. After getting rid of McAfee, I could keep it running (and running quite well I must add) for at least a week, and up to about 2 months without any issues.

Right after ditching it, I took the advice of someone I respected and installed AVG, which I continued to use on all of my PC's up until recently.

I ditched AVG after an issue with my daughter's laptop and some nasty malware it failed to detect. I didn't feel like I could trust it any more. I would rather false positives than false negatives.

My current AV is Avast. I am sure there has to be some way of getting it to behave and honor the exceptions list but I can't seem to figure it out.

The photoshop plugin was not a loss, wasn't used very much over the years, in fact I can't remember using it at all within the last 5.

The software I upgraded should have been upgraded any way, because that is just the smart thing to do. Only reason why I never did was related to a money issue. That version had some issues with triggering false positives in a few different AV's and not just Avast. I knew this and when it started happening in AVG I chose to just add to exceptions list and go on with my life. When it happened in Avast too, I contemplated upgrading, and the fact I couldn't figure out how the ignore list works in Avast, just drove me to finally do it. It's not something I regret. Newer version works much better than the old...less buggy. I really don't mind the extra rice & beans I had to eat to pay for it.

nircmd was not something I wanted or needed in LBC to begin with, and removing it was no loss to me. In fact, I have recommended that mouser offer it as a separate download in order to avoid issues like this, and warn users that it could trigger an AV alert. This extra tool should be optional and not included by default.

And as far as the game goes, I didn't get rid of it. I happen to like it too much and don't plan on getting rid of it until I at least beat all the levels.  The graphics are awesome and the game boards are a blast. It makes me laugh. I love doing things like destroying train tracks and sending cows flying into the sky. It's one of the better breakout style games I have played. :D

I ditched AVG for Avast and I will admit it does freak out and give many more false positives.

Exmples:

A photoshop plugin I have had for many years will trigger it whenever I attempt to run Paintshop Pro. I can't remember which one it was. Wasn't one I use that often so I just got rid of the plugin to make it shut up and let me run PSP.

The game Magic Ball 2.

Older version of PS Tray Factory (annoyed me so much I paid to upgrade)

And it also went nuts every time I ran LBC after mouser's inclusion of nircmd. (I had to remove nircmd)

In most cases I can tell it to ignore and the application is somewhat usable until I run it again and have to again tell it to ignore whatever it is screaming about. (I can't seem to be able to tell Avast to ignore anything permanently. It just ignores the exclude list.)

The exception is Magic Ball 2, which is completely unplayable unless I turn Avast's background scanning off, before running it. I contacted Avast and even sent them a copy of the file, but they claim the file is "damaged" and therefore they aren't going to do anything about it. (it is not damaged) I have also contacted Alawar and let them know, but never heard anything back from them.

In my own coding experiences, OCR is a right pain in the @$$ to get working well.

I don't think it uses real OCR, since it is unable to capture text from screenshots of images. Real text has to be somewhere in there.

I stand corrected -- i was not trying the add/remove dialog but the task manager dialog -- i misread the post.
I haven't tried the add/remove dialog, but if it is as CheckUserFirst says, then that would be a problem.  I'm curious to know how HyperSnap does it (though I must say the HyperSnap author is a very clever guy so i'm not surprised if he found a clever solution).

Snagit 5 also fails with Auto Scroll in the add/remove window.

But Snagit contains a second type of scrolling capture in addition to Auto Scroll, that does work.  The Custom Scroll feature is very much the same as what cyberdiva described for HyperSnap.

By the way, using Custom Scroll with Text Capture in Snagit works quite well in add/remove programs, to get the list of applications without anything from the file size column.

You really should add text capture to SC, so I'll have one less reason to use Snagit.  ;)

Living Room / When Computers Leave Classrooms, So Does Boredom
« Last post by app103 on August 04, 2009, 04:40 PM »
College leaders usually brag about their tech-filled "smart" classrooms, but a dean at Southern Methodist University is proudly removing computers from lecture halls. José A. Bowen, dean of the Meadows School of the Arts, has challenged his colleagues to "teach naked"—by which he means, sans machines.

More than any thing else, Mr. Bowen wants to discourage professors from using PowerPoint, because they often lean on the slide-display program as a crutch rather using it as a creative tool. Class time should be reserved for discussion, he contends, especially now that students can download lectures online and find libraries of information on the Web. When students reflect on their college years later in life, they're going to remember challenging debates and talks with their professors. Lively interactions are what teaching is all about, he says, but those give-and-takes are discouraged by preset collections of slides.

He's not the only one raising questions about PowerPoint, which on many campuses is the state of the art in classroom teaching. A study published in the April issue of British Educational Research Journal found that 59 percent of students in a new survey reported that at least half of their lectures were boring, and that PowerPoint was one of the dullest methods they saw. The survey consisted of 211 students at a university in England and was conducted by researchers at the University of Central Lancashire.

Students in the survey gave low marks not just to PowerPoint, but also to all kinds of computer-assisted classroom activities, even interactive exercises in computer labs. "The least boring teaching methods were found to be seminars, practical sessions, and group discussions," said the report. In other words, tech-free classrooms were the most engaging.

This of course assumes that all computers that will use the software have an internet connection that can be used for this and there is no firewall that could block it, that isn't under the user's control.

What does one do when they want to install something on a pc that has no internet connection and never will? Or on a pc in which a firewall a user has no control over will not allow the app to phone home to complete the registration. They will no longer have a key they can enter that will activate it.

This is the first issue that comes to mind. I am sure if I thought about it some more I could come up with others.

Then you might want to remove them from PhilB66's post, as well.

It's the standard Windows taskbar.

Only should pop out when I move the mouse to the right edge of screen, hit the Windows key to open the start menu, or something wants to flash a taskbar button or tray balloon.

I think SC is moving my mouse to the far right, even when ctrl+shift+left click is done near the far left.
