An interesting vid. That type of thing is why I like Japanese films/tv.

The movie Dolls that I linked consists of 3 vignettes.  The longest is the Kanno Miho vehicle.  Without giving the whole plot away, it is about 2 lovers who wander Japan for decades tied together by a rope.  I won't say more for chance of spoiling it.  But if you haven't seen it, it's a good alternative to the standard Kurosawa stuff.

40, thanks for the advice.  One reason I'm thinking the next class I take should be Conversational Spanish is that it can be a deal killer if you no habla Espanole around Miami.

I feel like if I could do even some kind of Windows Help Desk then eventually I'd make contact with someone who would recognize I can do more.

Step one though is to make enough so I can get the transit pass every month, get haircuts, and keep in clean clothes.  The housing will have to come later it seems.

Bit I feel like things are moving a bit.  I do have a subsidized cell phone.

I have to bite the bullet and try doing some web pages.  That may be the fastest way to earn a hundred or two a week to start.

I appreciate all the suggestions.  :)

The film Dolls got me interested in watching movies with Kanno Miho.  Maybe no connection except she was a real doll.  ;)

(I say "was" because I think she had some cosmetic work done.  Now she is merely beautiful.  But earlier she was incredibly cute with freckles.  Oh, and, yeah, she can act.  :)

I'll take a look at your links now.  :)

Edit: Not totally off topic.  In the film Dolls there is live action but also sequences with dolls of the type shown in the pic in your post.  (Hmm, seems I don't have the bandwidth on this WiFi to check it out now.  But I will later.)

You are right about one thing.  Even Johnnie Cochran can't get you acquitted of the crime of being old. I notice the young people on campus function under the impression that it's a contagious condition.  :)

For the time being a friend found a class for me that's inexpensive and doesn't require a textbook.  Enough to get a student ID and regroup.  There's a councilor on campus who may help getting at least some part time work.  I'll also have to get onto some of those job training programs.  Some pay for classes and may even provide a stipend.

It seems like the first step takes the longest.  Maybe now I can get on a good roll.  :)

Thanks for the suggestions.  It does crack me up though when I see ads to go to such and such a school for software development.  They give the impression the IT Boom(tm) is still ongoing.  Weird.  :)

Yeah, I can't wait to set up a real computer room.  Just have a bunch of PCs with one or 2 OS at most on each and just network 'em.

It will be interesting to see how much of a pita GPT is with multiboot systems.  I haven't read up on it yet.  Other items at the front of the line.  I need to play around with web pages and see if I can't make a buck doing them.  But first I have to get any steady income.  Time to hit the job training centers and do the social worker schtick.  :)

Another factor could be that this mint is an already configured machine.  The folder full of files is on E: partition whereas the other VMs were iso files that were then installed.  If I had a desktop right now I'd probably dual boot the W7 x64 and a mint distro,  I'd put all W8 and other on a machine with UEFI and GPT.

To me W8 is negligible except for the imperative to keep up for support work purposes. :)

Edit:  W8 I guess is at least a learning vehicle for GPT and EUFI stuff.  Other than that I hate it.  :)

Heh.  This is a defragger's paradise.  They recommend defragging from inside the running VM(which I did by installing auslogics) then closing it and defragging the virtual drive from VMWare settings tools.  Then defragging the host's HD.

I did all that.  Bumped the ram for each VM up to 2 GB.  Alo running 4 GB of ReadyBoost.  I'm still not sure if RB is a placebo or actually does something besides making a 4 GB file on the USB.

In any case things are slightly spiffier.  W7 x64 is actually usable once it comes up.  Now I just need a real destop machine(and a real desk) to put it on.  The Mint is still pretty sluggish.  But at least I got to take a look at it.
3208
Thank you both.  :)
3209
Great stuff.   :D
3210
Thanks.  I didn't know about the internal defrag.  Also out of curiosity I added a USB 3.0 thumb for ReadyBoost.  It doesn't seem like it will let me increase the memory for the VMs though.

I'm installing a Vista x64 image now just for grins. It's going to be stuck on expaning files for quite some time.  :)
3211
Hmm, I don't know if it's coincidence.  But there's a PodcastOne.com.  From the look of it I'd say it's just a name clash.  :)
3212
Ah, that partition showed 27% fragmented from unpacking the files.  I'll see how it feels after the defrag.
3213
Thanks for the info.  I did find a Mint14 VM for download.  It opened but at the moment it is downloading VMWare Tools for Linux.  I'll see how it goes.  :)

Edit:  I'm at the desktop.  Seems a bit sluggish.  I guess it is set for 1 GB ram usage.  The calculator came up.  So it's not dead.  :)

This reminds me of my favorite Archie Bunker quote:

Gloria Bunker-Stivic: Daddy, did you know that sixty percent of the people murdered in this country in the last ten years were killed by guns?

Archie Bunker: Would it make you feel any better, little girl, if they was pushed out of windows?

Recommend Debian based image for VMWare Player on W8?

I have VMWare Player set up on my Windows 8 Laptop.  I already have W7 Pro set up on it.  I'm looking for a Debian based Linux image that would install via the "easy" method.  Just to play around without a lot of effort.  It's been a long time since I toyed with Linux.  This VMWare Player makes it easy to get the basic system going.  So it's now or never.  :)

It's not command line but Thunderbird can be configured to access many web mail accounts as pop3.  One example is hotmail.  It can probably do gmail too but I'm not certain.

Edit:  also there may be an AddOn for Thunderbird that does the gmail setup for you.

Photofiltre, fast and easy to use

I forgot about that one.  I remember it was the first freeware I found that I could figure out how to do layers.  Does the free one still support layers?  I'm just curious.

Yes, it does. I use the version 7 for non-commercial use though I think the X pro version wasn't expensive.

Thanks for the info.  :)

That looks like an awesome deal. It's a shame I'd have no idea what to do with it if I bought it!  ;D

+1.  I hate it when that happens.

@skwire I don't know if you've seen this function by SKAN
( just in case it may be helpful )

; function by SKAN on AHK forums
;
PathCreateFromURL( URL )
{
  if (! URL)
  return ""
 VarSetCapacity( fPath, Sz := 2084, 0 )
 DllCall( "shlwapi\PathCreateFromUrl" ( A_IsUnicode ? "W" : "A" )
     , Str,URL, Str,fPath, UIntP,Sz, UInt,0 )
 return fPath
}

OK, thanks folks, I'll take that advice and leave things as such (while attempting to keep things clean and lean ...).

+1 for one partition.  A nice side effect is that if you can keep the free pace percentage high(perhaps by storing some data on external or thumb drives) you would be surprised how fast "quickie" defrags run using a tool such as Auslogics defrag, with no optimizations. If it takes less than 15 minutes you can easily run it 3 or 4 times weekly.  I'm not a believer in the "defrag in the background" methodology.

Of course mentioning defrag courts danger as the various philosophies may be accompanied by religious fervor.  :)

+1 - I swear it's like some kind of drug or something. I have a FaceBook account that I setup under a pseudonym about a year ago, just to see if I could. I never did anything with it; no pictures; no profile; no content. I just checked it...and I have 7 friend requests. Seriously??

...Are they trying to draw me out of my shell or something??

Zoiks.

I signed up with Facebook just because it can be used to sign into other sites.  Leaving a comment on a software blog,as example.  It's handy for "one off" interactions. Almost a replacement for the "bug me not" browser AddOn.  :)

Unfortunately, as long as the average Joe can watch his sports programs on TV; get his nekkid' wimmen channels after the wife and kids have turned in; and not have to think about anything more than is absolutely necessary (because they've automated it) - he'll be ok with nearly anything that comes down the pike.

This made me think of the "steel belted radials" part of Beale's rant posted above.  :)
