Seedling's Software / Re: Hi Everyone
« Last post by mouser on April 23, 2006, 04:51 PM »
a related idea:

what if an additional tab was "make playlist from file list", and let users drag and drop files.
this is almost identical to the randomize playlist function, and in fact maybe you could use the same exact process:
ie when you select randomize existing playlist, all it does is initialize a list of songs, which users could also create by dragging and dropping files into it.

the purpose of this would be that we could manually select and drag in a ton of files and dirs and have it make a random playlist from that.

Borland C++ Builder Contest / Re: Other Borland Developer Studio Languages?
« Last post by mouser on April 23, 2006, 03:55 PM »
i'm afraid this contest is only for c++ builder.  there are some great delphi communities out there but so little for c++ builder users so we thought we would focus this one on c++ builder.

but most of our contests in the future will be language neutral so stay tuned for more programming contests where there will be no specific ide/language.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Screenshots from movies
« Last post by mouser on April 23, 2006, 03:12 PM »
you have 2 choices:

the easiest and smartest is to use a video player which has a built in screenshot taking function.
see here -> https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1208.0

the other option is to turn off "hardware/video acceleration" in your video player.  Both windows media player and real player have options for this, and when you turn it off (and restart) you will then be able to take screenshots.

i would love to see a newsreader review (maybe 2, one for binary usenet downloaders and one for article reading/posting)..
anyone want to volunteer to spearhead this? it's definitely something needed.

i don't think i fully understand the question, can you rephrase it?

Developer's Corner / Panda3d - nice looking new 3d game engine
« Last post by mouser on April 22, 2006, 02:19 PM »
Panda3D is a 3D engine: a library of subroutines for 3D rendering and game development. The library is C++ with a set of Python bindings. Game development with Panda3D usually consists of writing a Python program that controls the the Panda3D library.
Panda3D is unusual in that its design emphasis is on supporting a short learning curve and rapid development. It is ideal whenever deadlines are tight and turnaround time is of the essence.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Window manager/organizer
« Last post by mouser on April 22, 2006, 02:04 PM »
I read DNeb's idea on Joel's page and i think it's actually a nice one.

Basically he wants to be able to say to the program (maybe through right-click and choosing "Memorize" in system tray), for the program to memorize the size and positions of any visible windows.

Then when he wants (from right-click and choosing "Arrange") for the program to take any visible windows that it has previously memorized position and size and restore them to their positions and sizes.

I think this is a really nice idea.

Might I add it would be nice in an advanced version to work with multiple layouts:
1. Be able to save multiple layouts by name (ie it should ask you to name your layout when you click Memorize), and then choose from the right click menu which layout to invoke.
2. Be able to delete layouts.
3. If you really want to be clever, have a double-click find the stored layout with the most matching windows visible and activate that one.

I'm looking forward to this tool, I think it would be useful.

Living Room / Re: Man Using Paper Clip to Barter for House
« Last post by mouser on April 22, 2006, 01:54 PM »
History of the PaperClip:

...Johan Vaaler, a Norwegian inventor with a degree in electronics, science and mathematics, invented the paperclip in 1899. He received a patent for his design from Germany in 1899, since Norway had no patent laws at that time. Johan Vaaler was an employee at a local invention office when he invented the paperclip. He received an American patent in 1901 -- patent abstract  "It consists of forming same of a spring material, such as a piece of wire, that is bent to a rectangular, triangular, or otherwise shaped hoop, the end parts of which wire piece form members or tongues lying side by side in contrary directions." Johan Vaaler was the first person to patent a paperclip design, although other unpatented designs might have existed first.

American inventor, Cornelius J. Brosnan filed for an American patent for a paperclip in 1900. He called his invention the "Konaclip".

But it was a company called the Gem Manufacturing Ltd. of England who first designed the double oval shaped standard looking paperclip. This familiar and famous paperclip, was and still is referred to as the "Gem" clip. William Middlebrook, of Waterbury, Connecticut, patented a machine for making paper clips of the Gem design in 1899. The Gem paperclip was never patented.

People have been re-inventing the paperclip over and over again. The designs that have been the most successful are the "Gem" with it's double oval shape, the "Non-Skid" which held in place well, the "Ideal" used for thick wads of paper, and the "Owl" the paperclip that did not get tangled up with other paperclips...

ahh i see your problem.

you need a program that can record real media streams.
search for: Streambox Vcr or Net Transport (those are the 2 i know but there are others as well).  StreamboxVcr is abandonware but works well.

See this post for some good resources links: https://www.donation.../index.php?topic=7.0

UrlSnooper / Re: Help with this url please
« Last post by mouser on April 22, 2006, 05:58 AM »
that's an easy one, url snooper found it as (5.8mb):

rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/news/olmedia/n5ctrl/progs/06/hardtalk/nicholson13apr.rm

you really shouldn't have had any trouble getting the url from urlsnooper unless you've got something misconfigured - it should be picked up as soon as you start viewing the video, and it's the only url it should find if you have "multimedia urls" selected as the protocol in url snooper.

wtf! ok my bad.  it's an old article i thought was new.

i guess i should leave up this post since

They decided to rewrite the code from scratch.
