welcome to the site hosinsky! glad to have you here.

you can use drag+drop of course to re-order things...  but maybe a nice sort option would be nice.

launchbar commander is going to get some improvement very soon.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Please Read This Before Posting Here
« Last post by mouser on April 29, 2006, 02:47 PM »
We have set up this special section of our forum where members are very welcome to post about their own projects and tell us all how wonderful they are.

HOWEVER, To keep this section from becoming a dumping ground for advertisements, we have some guidelines:

  • Do not just copy and paste some advertising blurb or description of your services from your website! If you do, this will be removed as spam.
  • If you are a marketing person from your company, do not post here; We have nothing against marketing people but this section is ONLY for the actual developers to post on.
  • Your post needs to explain your relation to the company or product, and needs to be your own description of why you think the product might be of interest to the members of the forum; if that seems like too much work, then don't post.
  • Do not post about minor version updates to commercial software.
  • Do not post about discounts to your commercial product too frequently -- no more than once per year

Also note:

  • Companies may not attack or insult each other on our forum.  If you violate this rule your posts will be deleted and you will be banned.

Developer's Corner / Re: Python vs. Ruby -- what's your take?

Ruby on Rails is getting a lot of attention  (http://www.rubyonrails.org/) -
it's a pretty full and powerful framework for implementing web-based online services (shopping carts, etc.), and quite impressive.

From what i can see Ruby use seems to be moving towards web development, while Python use is moving towards client development (wxpython is getting some real attenion as a GUI toolkit [though there is also wxruby]).

I've done some python coding.  It's ok, though I didn't find it anything special and I am not happy with the significant whitespace stuff.

Ruby likewise seems ok to me, but doesn't blow me away.  It does seem to get a bit more respect from the language mavens, but i'm not much of a scripting-language guy so I always find myself turned off by non-static typing (http://en.wikipedia....g/wiki/Static_typing).

ProcessTamer / Re: Tame applications based on CPU
« Last post by mouser on April 28, 2006, 09:27 PM »
well, it's an interesting issue and i can't really say for sure -
only way to find out for real would be to do a test.. maybe worth a try just for fun.

wouldn't be too hard to test:
set up a program that basically just reads from the hard disk constantly, and monitor disck i/o with some process explorer, and see if changing priority of the app from normal to low has any affect on disk i/o and responsiveness.

ProcessTamer / Re: Tame applications based on CPU
« Last post by mouser on April 28, 2006, 06:33 PM »
well you might be right IFF there are other applications also competing for the cpu, then perhaps a side effect might be a slight reduction in disk usage, but i have my doubts that you'd notice it in most cases.

after all we are assuming here that the app itself isn't using enough cpu to trigger a normal taming, so reducing it's priority is not likely to reduce its actual cpu usage significantly, which means it's disk access is not likely to be affected much.

now you could implement other things to proactively SLOW DOWN the app, which would have an effect.

ProcessTamer / Re: Tame applications based on CPU
« Last post by mouser on April 28, 2006, 06:09 PM »
Hi nick,

if you de-check the option, then it will only tame apps based on any explicit rules you set that say which apps should be forced to which priorities.

your disk usage idea is a good one, the problem is that while you could detect this scenario, lowering the apps priority wouldn't help you much :(
31891
bliss,

two things:
1) are you volunteering to help edit the shows?  do you have a particular program you might use to edit the show together?
i've been laying out this first show in sony Acid.  working pretty well.

2) and/or interviewing? do you have something that will let you record phone calls or like jgpaiva says, do you have a fast internet connection that can record a computer call?  It might be nice to do an interview of the author of mobysaurus dictionary (https://www.donation...are/Other/mobysaurus) he is in australia..

« Last post by mouser on April 28, 2006, 11:23 AM »
believe it or not we almost have enough audio for the first podcast.

but i still need one or two more fun things.

won't someone try a "man-on-the-street" interview??  i'm dying for one!!!!

i will promise a special prize to anyone who submits such a recording
(read above for description: basically you go on the street and ask people questions about thei computer experiences, or to define freeware/shareware/opensource/donationware), trying to get some funny reactions.

and all you last minute stragglers please record something and send it to [email protected] or ftp it anonymously to ftp.donationcoder.com
