« Last post by mouser on May 11, 2006, 02:05 PM »
can you tell me which version of firefox you are using?

my experience has been that it will work in firefox but it can be tricky.
see if this works:
1) select windows object (scrolling window) capture.
2) left click somewhere on the firefox page that is not an input field.
3) now hold the right hand shift key, and then press the right hand ctrl key.
this will simulate a mouse click and should start the capture without requireing mouse click.

if that works, then it will give me something more to go on.
if it doesn't work, can you give me some idea of what actually happens?

Developer's Corner / SourceForge getting some hate
« Last post by mouser on May 11, 2006, 08:27 AM »
Sourceforge has been angering some developers lately (ask Gothic here on the dc forum)..

So I used to think the folks at SourceForge were just overworked and under-appreciated. They've worked really hard recently to show me this is not the case. Sure, it's a "free" service, but it's there to sell their premium services, and they get a lot of exposure being the place to go for open-source development.
They've been having growing pains for a while; a few months ago, they had a major CVS outage. Open-source development the world around ground to a standstill for days while they worked to get hardware up. Since then, they've been planning on transitioning folks to subversion, and to a new CVS infrastructure. Did I mention that in the meantime, the anonymous CVS has been frozen and out-of-date since March? This outage was only "repaired" for developers; user access has been broken all this time.

Developer's Corner / cnet article: Flash to jump beyond the browser

Flash to jump beyond the browser
there are already "Projector" tools which turn flash things into desktop applications, but i think they are mostly for windows. i wonder if this is going to change things substantially.. could be interesting.

Adobe Systems is working on software meant to blur the line between the Web and desktop PCs.
The company is working on a project code-named Apollo, which will let applications written for Adobe's Flash presentation software run without a Web browser, Kevin Lynch, chief software architect and senior vice president of Adobe's platform business unit, told CNET News.com.

Developer's Corner / Nice older article on failure of del.ico.us competitor
« Last post by mouser on May 11, 2006, 08:05 AM »
very nice article from december 2005.  Linked to from recent article on youtube vs. google video (http://avc.blogs.com...how_youtube_kic.html).

scary because: these people talk about spending 13 million on marketing as no big deal, and talk about how small differences can result in failure or success.

side rant: this is part of what troubles me about this world - you need millions of marketing just to compete; without that no one will know about you and you will get buried by the competition ?

Now a little part of me is cringing as I write this. Having founded a bookmarking company in 1999 with pretty much the exact same vision as the new crop of services, I’ve got to feel, well, a little stupid. (or angry, or depressed, or whatever). Maybe writing about it will make me feel better and maybe even help me make a point or two about product development.
When we founded Blink.com (no link love, it’s a crappy search site now) the founders and I imagined a self-reinforcing product cycle:

that's very cool looking.

I was just about to express skepticism about this claim:
Blank Keys to Type up to 100% Faster
Like on a piano, since there are no keys to look at when typing, your brain will quickly adapt and memorize the key positions. Within a few short weeks users increase their typing accuracy and find themselves typing up to 100% faster.

I first read it as saying that the lack of printing would help you type faster since your brain wouldnt be distracted by the printing on keys, and i was going to point out that that contradicts most of what we know about the brain.

but on second reading i think they are saying that the lack of lettering will force you to become a touch typer, which will in the long run lead to faster typing, which seems reasonable enough.  pretty interesting idea actually.

text scraper isn't all that magical, but you can scrape text without capturing screenshot.
Select a windows capture, then select the object with text you want to scrape and click the little gears icon and you'll get a preview of the text that can be scraped if any, and a menu item to scrape it to clipboard.

try it on an about box to get a feel for it.

cool regarding eets :) :)

I'm proud to say that the Process Tamer help file has now been fully brought up to date.

In the coming months all other main DC apps will get a similar treatment.  Thanks for being patient

Note: As with all my apps, you can also view the help files online (and see always version info at end).

hmm...
i'd be interested in knowing if this is right or wrong:
The Microsoft Virtual Server is a more-refined successor to the "Virtual PC" product I've written about in the past

i thought they were very different products.  if virtual server really is usable as a standard windows app for software testing then this is a big deal.

cool routing puzzle game - sure to fry your nerves

Global Player is a Flash game designed to test your skills at sorting packages and routing them to their proper destinations. Everything in the game is color coded, which is great unless you are colorblind as there is no provision for colorblindness in this game.

So, provided that you can indeed tell the difference between the colored packages, each level consists of a system of conveyor belts and switches, giving way to multiple destinations where transportation awaits to receive each package and send it on its way. The key is to route each colored package to the vehicle indicated by the same color. Click on the large arrow swiches where the conveyor belts intersect to change the direction the packages pass through.

General Review Discussion / Opinions on remote PC control software
« Last post by mouser on May 10, 2006, 12:19 PM »
New member KPR has expressed some interest in doing a comprehensive review of remote-pc control software.

I think it would be fantastic to have such a review, and I thought we could help out a bit by suggesting programs we know about and features we care about.

I'll start off with a couple i've tried:
  • http://www.remotelyanywhere.com/ - really cool part is that the client can connect from a browser, which makes it ideal if you are in a place where you cant install a special client.
  • http://www.famatech.com/ - Remove Administrator - this is one i actually use.  they seem to be a bit stuck in terms of developing it, but it works pretty well and i like the interface.

Features i care about:
  • Speed
  • Easy of running client
  • Options for screen resizing (stretch, fullscreen, windowed)
  • Nice options on local pc for warning on user connect, passwords, etc. (i want to know if someone is trying to control my pc!)
  • Logging
  • Encryption
  • File transfer (asynchronous would be nice so i can do other stuff at same time)
  • Easy to enable and disable
  • Easy to keep track of different connections
  • Passwords and other options for allowing connections

by the way if it's any consolation to those who have been waiting..
farr v2 will have full plugin support as well as indexing.  no doubt about it.
so hopefully the wait will be worth it.
