Developer's Corner / More Git
« Last post by wraith808 on January 31, 2016, 08:54 PM »
I have a lot of projects for personal use- development and non-development work (writing and such).  I've tried multiple projects in one repo, and one repo per project.  I've seen a lot of different arguments for either, and a lot of them on both sides have referred to my pain points - shared libraries, repo overload, etc.  I was also looking at this stackoverflow question, and it brought up more questions than answers.

I was just wondering as a lot of people use Git around here, what are your personal preferences and why?  And no, I'm not looking at this point to transfer to another VCS.  I settled on Git a while ago, so that decision is made.

That's what I was thinking of doing- writing my own apps to supplement the lack.  Too much work, however.

Thanks for that SJ!  I'll check that on Monday- I'd not heard any of that before.  I'll also check the 401 - I think it was just a plain 401 still, which has been the problem from the beginning- no context.  I was able to get past all of the others with that setup... but it's been a pain without context.  The wireshark even returned just a 401, but I was able to get it from the Event logs.

StackOverflow mentions:
in IIS > 7, I had to add "useAppPoolCredentials = true" to the application's configuration in order to have everything work as expected. Without that configuration element, all authentication was broken.

The situation described at the link has an image indicating the problem...which on first glance matches with your description. Perhaps the suggestion above could be of any help?

I've already done that.  My setup on the app server side instructions that I created:

Setup of Web Application for use with Kerberos

  • Add App Pool Account to the Administrators group
  • Set up app pools. Use a service account that has an SPN set to be able to decrypt the Kerberos ticket.
  • Turn on 32-bit application support in app pool
  • Copy files. Make sure that file location has Read and Read & Execute (not sure if it actually needs List Folder Contents- I doubt it).  Give App pool accounts full access.
  • Set up sites
  • a. Turn off Anonymous Access if it is on.
  • b. Turn on Windows Authentication
  • c. Use Negotiate 1 - not the new Negotiate 2
  • d. Do not need to turn off Kernel Mode Authentication
  • e. Go into Config Editor
  • e1. Open webserver/security/authentication/windows auth
  • e2. set useAppPoolIdentity=True
  • e3. Make sure that Enabled=True
  • e4. Make sure that there is only one provider.

A lot of that is to remove red herrings from the mix rather than needed.  As I said, it works.  Just not reliably through the NLB, and I know nothing about the interaction of NLB with Kerberos, and can't find anything specifically in that regard.  I also don't know about the interactions of hypervisor and VMware, and that was one of the areas the neteng talked about, also.  But after reading books on kerberos and staying up many nights on that point, I'm not really looking to try to become an expert on hypervisor vs. vmware or NLB- so that becomes the point- trusting him that they have little to do with kerberos when everything else is set up correctly.

For each service, I have two VMs clustered- one in a Colo, and one Local.  I have one user that I'm using on the web service for that particular cluster.  I have an SPN setup for HTTP that contains the name of each machine and the user.  I access the machine through the clustername, and it goes to one server or another.

So for later reference, we have machine A, machine B (in the colo), cluster AB spanning the machines, and user C.  I connect to the test endpoint, and everything is fine.

I replicate that- let's say Machine X, machine Y (in the colo), cluster XY, and user Z.  I connect to the test endpoint and everything is fine.

So I have a client, that connects to cluster AB, that then connects to cluster XY to use its service.

I irregularly get 401s.  When it connects, it's fine... on the second hop, I can see that it's the client, and have it's credentials.  But sometimes... it  just fails for no reason.  I look in the logs, and there's a 401 there.  This never happens when I connect direct to the machines.

Our network guy said he thinks it's an interaction of VMware VMs with Hypervisor VMs... but I had to call BS on that.  There's no rhyme nor reason in the machines that it's connecting to creating a pattern (I added a key to pass through the machines so I can see the exact path it's taking, and there's just no pattern).

I think it's passing the kerberos ticket through the NLB... but he said that it just passes it along, so it's only passing what it's sent.  The other part of this is we made another endpoint just to test authorization, because it seems like if we're getting a 401, then we always get a 401, but if that first hop works, it will work from then on (we have affinity set, so the path stays the same through multiple calls), but that started failing today.  The other dev got a 201... then when he called the real endpoint, got a 401. (All of this is on the second hop- the first hop always works)

I know more about Kerberos than I wanted to know now after looking at this for a couple of months.  And I think we finally have the code right.  But the netops says that there is no way that NLB is causing this issue.

Have you ever seen NLB cause issues with kerberos tickets?

Anyone know quite a bit about Kerberos and VMs and NLB that I can bounce some stuff off of?  I'll post it here... but didn't want to go through formulating the post if there wasn't a sufficient mindshare to even have a hope of getting an answer  :-[

Updated.  The same link should give the updated version.  All you have to do is put the file name you want to open on the command line.  If it exists, it will open it.  If the file name has spaces in it, enclose it in double  quotes ("").

Let me know if you have any issues.

thanks for the quick update, it works well!

No problem!  Glad it works for you!

Do you know what browser base it's based on?  Or if it even is?  I want to say firefox because of a lot of the verbiage, but I'm not sure.

Based on the source code, I am under the impression that it's not just a fork of Chrome or Firefox. You may be getting Firefox vibes because the Brave founder/president/CEO, Brendan Eich, was formerly the CEO of Firefox or Mozilla or something.

Nope... as I said, I was getting it from the verbiage.  I didn't look into who anyone was or anything, it was just idle wondering when I saw some of the verbiage and the use of httpsanywhere.

I have one for you that's becoming pretty popular these days in gaming - Fate/Fudge dice.

Fate Core is becoming quite popular in gaming, which drives the popularity of these dice.

so, it's recognizing based on pre-seeded shapes and orientations?  What about orientations that are not fully face up?  I see that in the d4 in your examples... do you just pre-extract those positioning?  So you have to know the geometry of the dice?

I suspect that you may have drawn that line in possibly the "wrong" place.

I'm sure I'd have to agree with you about that. But I was trying not to sound too combative since it's a tender subject for a lot of people I like and respect. Even if I totally disagree with them about some things they hold dear.  8)

And that's navigating that space.  Even if you're sure that you're right, being able to leave it alone, as others experiences might not echo yours.  After all, if you're sure you're right, then of what practical use is arguing with someone who's sure you're wrong?  Are we so insecure in our beliefs (or disbeliefs) that we have to stir up something that won't make a difference either way, and will just in the end create fractious arguments?  I couldn't say for all, but that, to me, seems a non-gracious approach, no matter on which side you fall.

I personally think it's absolutely crucial we tackle uncomfortable topics from time to time. Many of the problems we are living with are a direct result of putting our heads in the sand or trying to arrange things so that nobody is made to feel uncomfortable. Truth is, I'm firmly convinced certain people need to be made acutely uncomfortable about some of the things they believe in. Especially when they advocate for others to accept and, in many cases, to obey them without question.

I have a big advantage however. I don't try to pretend (to others or myself) that I have the big answer. But I do have a brain, some life experience, and the benefit of an education that taught me to question everything and accept nothing purely because somebody said it's so.

If that bothers someone, there's plenty of other people they can talk to besides me. If you include me in a discussion however, best expect me to engage and question. And that's not because I have the answer. It's because I don't. However, I'd be very much interested in learning or discovering it. So let's "get it on" so to speak.

I'm not saying you specifically.  You're willing to engage on the level that many people are not.  That is, with no preconceptions of someone's belief or reason thereof.  Others, on both sides, are so sure that they know the answer for everyone, that they might as well not engage at all.  Questions are fine IMO.  It's when you are unwilling to even consider counter arguments that might not go with your belief that discussion breaks down.  Or, you're willing to denigrate others experience in the talk.  There's a wide swath of difference in uncomfortable questions and dismissal or condescension.  And a lot of people don't know where that difference lies- their own beliefs get in the way of them even considering that there is a difference.  And that's where the big divide comes into play.

I'd love to have a reasoned and rational conversation about it, laying hubris and pre-conceptions on the altar of discussion without intent.  But I've not found that place for discourse- especially online.  Other than with my friends in person- most of my friends are Agnostic/Atheist, so we have some real conversations about it.  Or had, as we don't really have the opportunity for it anymore.  But they were really good when we did.

I don't personally believe that there are any beliefs that are dangerous nor that should be censored or censured.  It's when beliefs become action that problems happen.  But when you want your beliefs to be actions, that want should also translate into a willingness to have these uncomfortable lights shined on them.  But... that never happens.

If I were you, I'd actually go with the i5-6600K instead of the i7-6700K.

http://pcpartpicker....l-cpu-bx80662i56600k

It should save you a good $150, and you can put that towards a better video card.  And you can overclock the i5 to the same clock as the i7 if you really want to.

https://www.youtube..../watch?v=EhaB1dqYv_I

http://cpuboss.com/c...-Intel-Core-i5-6600K

http://www.trustedre...ew#tr-review-summary

You can get a GeForce GTX 960 for that difference in price.  Personally, I go with Radeons.  But there you have it.

I currently have a haswell i5 with a Radeon R9, and skyrim is no big deal (it wasn't even with addons on my last generation machine).  I don't expect to have any problems with Fallout 4 either, though I haven't tried it yet.  I have no problems with Far Cry 4, however, which points to no problems with it.

(on another point, that site is really good for pricing and checking compatibility with builds)
