Useless, why? You'll obviously want to not change the Windows default of "prompt for password when resuming from standby" :)

mouser: with FDE, everything is encrypted all the time - that's the beauty of it. There's no time when decrypted data is available on disk, only in RAM.

TrueCrypt has options to dismount volumes on user log-off and power-saving modes. That obviously won't work for your system partition, but that's protected by your regular windows user logon password (as far as I understand, you want to protect against burglars, not NSA and other people who can launch cold attacks against your RAM blocks to extract your decryption keys ;)).

Developer's Corner / Re: RAD Studio 2010 Released Today (Delphi/C++ Builder)
« Last post by f0dder on September 28, 2009, 04:18 PM »
One worthwhile feature in 2010 is the significantly expanded RTTI. It's supposed to be on par with .net reflection now. But yeah, what's called RAD Stuidio 2010 should really have been a hotfix for 2009.
Glimpsing over the feature list, imho it should have been somewhere between 2005 and 2008 :]

So... it's a 2010 release, and full unicode support is a new feature? No 64bit support? And not even unsigned 64bit integers? This is a joke, isn't it? :)

#7 - kinda nasty. Could be useful for archiving your facebook mails, but it's probably going to be abused a helluva lot more than it's used for good.

#8 - nice :D

General Software Discussion / Re: -Recklessly- remove hardware (from USB)
« Last post by f0dder on September 27, 2009, 06:38 PM »
Even with "optimize for quick removal", I'd still use "safely remove" to be 100% on the safe side. That will ensure all data is flushed and the filesystem is clean, and will notify you if there's programs still trying to access the device.
Amen. However, it is extremely frustrating when Windows refuses to eject a device despite there being no open handles to it. I find that in this case, there are no adverse effects to simply yanking the device.
I haven't experienced that?

However, I find that tortoisesvn's cache service often has a lock on an usb drive - killing the process fixes the problem :)

Hm, I don't think neither my printer nor my scanner shows up on the list - I always just yank those out anyway :)

Do non-storage devices even show up on safely remove?

Sounds like a good idea, mouse-man.

Get a netbook, set up a non-admin account on it, and indeed go for TrueCrypt FDE in case the machine is stolen.

I've been running Win7 since the RC, and I've got the RTM version (not installed though) for.. some weeks? from school's MSDNAA. So I'm not going to throw a party, except for the little party every time the machine boots with blazing speed :P

Daleus: I don't own any animals - my mum has had ~3 cats (iirc), and they were all bloody pscyho. She currently has a dog, and while I kinda always disliked dogs, this particular one is a goodhearted girl.

A harddrive is probably more reliable than optical media - especially if you only connect it when you need to use it (and if that isn't every day, incurring too much spin-up/spin-down wear&tear). If the data is important to you, I'd personally keep backups on a second drive as well - but I'm paranoid :)

Copying DVD movies: dvdfab platinum for decrypting+handling ARccOS.
Copying audio CDs: dBpoweramp or EAC - and nothing else. FLAC + cue, with AccurateRip enabled = :-*

Nah, but it's friday - I'm stocking up after work :D

All the more reason not to let said refugees attempt to make ACF's problems DC's problems.
Well, we're not going to let that happen, now, are we? :)

I think alt.lang.asm might be worse
Well, sure, that would be bad. Consider the name of the group; how can you consider Assembly to be a language? I mean, it's really just a collection of mnemonics for machine language. Without any lexical analysis or grammar, how can you call it a language?
 :trout:
Oh, it does have a limited grammar (and a bit less limited when you add macro support) - but you might argue that it's about as primitive as some of the programmers that use it ;)

CWuestefeld: I think alt.lang.asm might be worse, though - it was pretty much destroyed by one single person (sure, there's a lot of other people responsible for noise, but not at that level of vile bile).

150 full DVD images: ~645GB (150 images of ~4.3GB).
1TB harddrive: ~930GB capacity (1012/10243) - filesystem overhead not taken into account.

I think that "while not moving" should be "while you're not watching", but hey - it doesn't ruin my point... cats are ice-cold psychopathic murders, plotting to kills us all!

And if I had a nickel for every story I've read about someone getting fired because of something they posted on their Myspace or Facebook page...
If you do moronic things, then...
  • don't add your boss or coworkers on facebook
  • set sane privacy settings
...and problem is solved.

And then there's all the wonderful datamining they can do with Carnivore. And don't bother with the wikipedia entry on Carnivore, it doesn't have much to do with the real system - and that's all I'm saying about that 8)
