General Software Discussion / Re: Process Tamer.. The Drink

Tom's right about the splash of water... I didn't want to say anything about the ice, but, well, Tom's er, broken the ice! So there. I tend to drink whisky's neat myself, but a splash of water really does enhance the flavour.

Tom - I LOVE Irish whiskey  :)

Zaine - see if your local library has the Jeeves and Wooster series on DVD - I watched it in Canada on a PBS station out of Michigan, so it might have made it to DVD down there! It's worth tracking down. You can catch both of them in BlackAdder as well...

Chris - nice little review, why not post it in the mini-review section? You've made me want to give MM a try for the first time

[off topic]The main issue with Outlook in general is that if you leave an instance of it running, it gradually sucks up more and more of your RAM. The "fix" is to periodically bring it to the foreground, if it is set to minimize to the taskbar. Better yet, in my experience, set it to minimize to the system tray/notification area (right click the Outlook icon in the system tray and select "Hide when minimized".[/off topic]

Thanks Zaine! I love Stephen Fry. Did you ever watch A Bit of Fry and Laurie or Jeeves and Wooster? Americans now know Hugh Laurie from "House" but I wonder how many realise that for years he and Stephen Fry were a comic duo...

Anyway, I'll enjoy this

Gosh! I almost forgot my absolute favorite of all, which also supports live search: ZTreeWin (http://www.ztree.com/).

This is really, really late in reply to your post, but I've never been able to figure out how to change directories in ZTWin  :-[ :o :-\

vegas - if you're feeling adventurous, try an Abelour or a Cardhu - sublime. Also, the Scotch (whisky based) liquers - Drambuie is AWESOME.

PS something tells me that my spelling of Abelour is off. Way off  :-[ My bottle is long gone so can't check!

Fair comments, Dave. VSM is/was supposed to get skinning, but I don't think it's yet been implemented. You can get the XP start order by right clicking and selecting "sort by type and name" and de-select "keep the positions". What this does is effectively turn it into XP's start menu tweaked - it's bigger and you've got the search bar plus the keyboard shortcuts.

Yes, X-Setup Pro is what I've been using for years, precisely because it's very safe and it specifies what it's going to do. What's more, the code for every plugin is available at the click of a button.

+1 for XSetup Pro  I've been using since long before it became shareware and it's the only tweaking tool I use (other than TweakUIXP), for the exact reasons Lashiec states (though having the code available at the click of a button is completely lost on me  :-[).

As for Guines, I was pleasantly surprised to find Ruby Tuesday (The finest dining within 200 miles of my home!) has recently added it to their draft.  Good times!

I've enjoyed many a good time at Ruby Tuedays myself! However, if it is the finest dining experience to be had within 200 miles of you, you have my condolensces! Seriously, though, you're in Maine. Maine! There's not a lobster shack near you with better grub (albeit sans the Guinness, no doubt)?

(visuo-spatial memory could be enhanced by category regions, a sort of way-point navigation)

This is exactly what version one did... I honestly thought that version two signalled a change in direction from this, though. I like the contextual idea that you mention. Done correctly this would be a real boon (done haphazardly it is likely that this would drive me to drink!).

Yikes is an understatement! I just watched the video demo as well and don't "get" the emphasis on visual memory. Version one DID emphasize positioning - it was broken up into "grids" and featured large icons. Since version two, though, the emphasis, to my mind, has been to work with the existing start menu "ethos" and enhance it. Using VSM - just fired it up and updated for the first time since the late summer - I find the icons and the text far too small for "visual memory" to be enhanced and visually scan the menu for programmes and other items by name. Anyway, funny how enthusiastic one can be for something and how that enthusiasm can wear off. I still think VSM is a fine start menu replacement and that it would benefit some users. For me, I just don't rely on the start menu enough to make it worth my while.

Done - not too bad WRT resource "hit"... I don't know if I'm going to wind up using it much or not, but it's something to play with for now

I don't use Vista Start Menu anymore, though it's still installed. The XP menu and TrueLaunchBar cover all my needs. I like VSM but find the resource overhead a bit onerous (haven't actually tried it since I upgraded to 2gBs of RAM, though). What don't you like about it - particularly, what do you find annoying? No doubt your response will remind me of issues I've forgotten about, but I thought I'd ask!

I'm anxiously awaiting the results of your experimentation with Dextop, Lashiec! Of course, I'll probably cave in the next 12 hours and install it myself... but I'd still be interested in hearing how you get on with it!

Most of what I keep pertains to back issues of Gizmo and DC, password information for various forums, and online purchases.  Guess I'm somewhat of a neat freak.

Yeah... but that actually describes the bulk of my correspondence anyway!

Yes, agreed (good suggestion ). Although this doesn't actually bother me, I don't use the tray icon either and have PS Tray Factory set to hide FARR's tray icon.
