Living Room / Re: DonationCoder Recipe Sharing Thread

Anyone know any good ice cream recipes? I'd like to try my hand at some, but I've got a bunch of recipes and not sure what to try, so kind of fishing for personal experience from others here...

PEOPLE in our GOVERNMENT are the problem.

I'm not so sure about that. I'm more inclined to say that government is the problem. It's just a silly bunch of "good intentions" that are paving the road to Hell. Does it matter whether you start with the psychotic, priviledged political class there, or is it too long to wait 6 months for the naive newbie to start down his own path to the dark side?

I think he was saying it's the actual politicians that are the problem.  The "government" is nothing but a group of people running the show.  That group of people have turned out to be the elite "in crowd".  They are mostly people that have been groomed for their positions all their lives, like the Bush's, like father, like son....

Yes - that's what 40hz was saying. I simply think that the focus is misplaced. e.g. You said:

The "government" is nothing but a group of people running the show.

I think THAT is the problem.

Whoever is in the government is less important as they always degenerate into frenzied orgies of mass murder. Rummel has some decent graphs that illustrate that:

http://www.hawaii.ed...rkills/NOTE5.HTM#FIG

He backs it all up with facts and data.

One thing that should be noted though is size matters. The distinction is drawn out several times in "Industrial Society and Its Future" with emphasis on individuals and "SMALL GROUPS".

Anyways... 40hz pointed out that he sees a problem with the PEOPLE. I think the problem is the SYSTEM. I do not mean whether it is democratic, autocratic, theocratic or anything of the sort. I'm saying the problem there is that there *IS* a system, and I am not placing any particular blame on any given system or any given faction within any system of government.

To draw that out into a bit clearer terms, not only do I not see any difference between the left/right or republicans/democrats or liberals/conservatives, etc., I don't see any important differences between the many variations on government that you see in different places, e.g. US, UK, China, Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, Canada, Australia, Jordan, etc. They all have systems of government founded on force, coercion, fraud, and violence. Once that's in place, it's largely irrelevant WHO runs the show.

But, I'm just a batshit crazy renegade. :P :D

I guess I disagree with Renegade regarding "nobody cares about features" -- I'd rather see a feature list than a hand-wavey description of how a program is going to solve my problems.

Hahaha! :D How can we tell that mouser programs? :D

This is one of those "disconnects" that we programmers have between us and users. You and I see file formats, encoders, encodings, settings and the like, but your regular user sees a document or video or music or a picture. Whether that picture is PNG, JPG or TIFF is largely irrelevant to them. They're more interested in viewing it and sharing it with some friends. They view the same things we view from a very different perspective.

Are features important? Yes. Is listing them important? Absolutely.

But we need to try to frame those features in ways that are more relevant to users who fundamentally don't care about the feature itself, but rather care about what the feature does for them.

Here's a simple example....

Font colour vs. text colour. Are those the same? Absolutely NOT. Those are 2 different things. Well, to us techie types anyways. For your average user, those are the same thing.

Your average mISV has a very hard time wrestling with this issue because we simply have a very different perception of things. The depth of our knowledge and understanding acts as a kind of barrier to communication for us. You see this exact issue come up again and again and again in software marketing forums.

^^ I'm not sure whether to think that's very cool or to be very disturbed...

+1 for app there.

For your text, you need to focus on telling people how it will make their life easier. Put yourself in the user's shoes and imagine what you need to do. Nobody cares about "features". They care about solving their problems.
3132
^From 7,000 feet it certainly wouldn't be out of the question with this administration.

But seeing battalions of uninvited guests show up wouldn't be very likely. The US doesn't really have the troops to spare right now. Hence the big interest in drones...

Oh. I meant that in the uninvited guests that Syria has rather than the uninvited guest that Iraq has/had. Y'know... al-CIAda sponsored guests. :P
3133
@40hz - eloquent as always. ;)

A quick comment or 3 on this:

Technology is not the problem. Laws are not the problem. PEOPLE in our GOVERNMENT are the problem.

Technology is not the problem.

Absolutely! They are mere tools. Too many people don't understand that there is nothing innately good/evil about a hammer, fork, spoon, car, screwdriver, etc.

Laws are not the problem.

They don't really have any kind of existence - they're merely extensions of people, and an invisible set of bars to keep people in line. But, long discussion there that's better skipped.

If you start off with the idea that it's bad to kidnap, steal, defraud, and murder... EXCEPT if you happen to be part of a special ruling class... is it any wonder that things turn out badly?

A & -A

From there you can derive anything.

Should we be surprised that when we base our entire society on force and violence, that things always end up as force and violence?
3134
Still...can you believe Panama did that? What a surprise! :-\

Guess they're not too anxious to join along in the same fates as places like Iraq or Syria. Can't say as I really blame them too much for not wanting a nice solid dose of "democracy" delivered from 20,000 feet above or for not wanting battalions of uninvited "guests".
3135
Nice analogy provided by Stilgherrian over at ZDnet. (Full article here)

If he's going to mention the 70s, might as well mention Project SHAMROCK:

http://www.faqs.org/...ration-Shamrock.html

https://en.wikipedia...iki/Project_SHAMROCK

No... None of the recent revelations expose anything "recent". They only expose how things have accelerated "thanks" to the wonders of modern technology.

Got to love it when ex-Stasi officers come out talking about what they're seeing here, and how it puts what they did to shame.

I turned out to have US colleagues, looking for ways to migrate to Europe .......... to get away from the US way of life, to bring their kids in safety.
...I did have US colleagues, who were looking for ways to migrate to Europe ..........

Europe has a proven track record. Not so sure it's ideal...

But I don't think that running is the answer anymore. However, there are quite a lot of people that do think running is the answer, e.g. Doug Casey, Jeff Berwick, etc. There are businesses that specialize in helping Americans get out of the US and dump their citizenship. Galt's Gulch anyone? Given the 100%+ tax rate in France, I imagine there's a French translation for that, but my French isn't that good.

You (or anyone else) might want to consider at least quickly browsing through the works of R. J. Rummel. Those that prefer videos or documentaries may wish to watch "It Can't Happen Here" by Larken Rose.

Those can help provide some perspective that you will not get in casual conversation with friends (unless you know a bunch of "fruit cakes" like me) or ever see in the mainstream news.

Nowadays I look westwards in fear.
Scared by a police-state where there is no freedom no more, where human-rights have no value.
A state that is to scary to live in.

It is very scary, but there are things people can do to make it less so.

I think this will appeal to quite a few people here that are technically oriented or enjoy geeky stuff.

Jeff Blum's YouTube channel has a bunch of tutorials on Arduino programming, sensors, servos, etc.

Here's tutorial #1:

Had a bit too much to drink to do any serious math there, but when I saw "NPR", my BULLSHIT alert went off. Dunno. But citing the NPR immediately puts a sour piece of cat turd in my mouth.

The NPR part was in the question, not the answer (other than a very tangential article about what the NSA has disclosed, which is nothing)

If you read the answer itself, it has some very interesting plausibles and implausibles, with very realistic caveats about not knowing the exact capabilities but extrapolating from consumer available technologies.  But the other article gives quite spurious information (not that I necessarily say its false, just unsubstantiated) about the amount of data and definitely non-substantiated claims of their ability to process that amount of data.

Heh! Should have said, "Had a bit too much to read!" :P :D

Saw the EB = ZB thing with NPR there and figured blech.

But people run through some decent numbers there. Some of the comments were really good as well:

anything experimental would be a) ridiculously expensive b) had to made completely in US c) by government agencies. Unless you're thinking some alien technology from Rosewell...

Hahaha! :D

Hahahah! I love those things.

How long was the 100 years war?
When was the war of 1812?

Oh... and it's bad, don't get me wrong.  I just have a thing for numbers and accuracy.

http://skeptics.stac...ve-zettabytes-of-dat

And the quality of the data is no where near the same as the Stasi, along with the endemic system of informants and fear used to get the data on a personal level.  And the sample size.  It's bad... but I hate making the same mistake in the other direction...

Had a bit too much to drink to do any serious math there, but when I saw "NPR", my BULLSHIT alert went off. Dunno. But citing the NPR immediately puts a sour piece of cat turd in my mouth.

As for consumer and commercial systems... Pfft... that was just idiotic. When you order PB of storage, you get a tiny weeny bit of a discount. Again, my BULLSHIT alert started ringing off pretty darn loud.

Then again, I might sober up. But I rather doubt it. :P :D hehehe~!

And, a shorter video about repealing free speech, etc.

I must warn you, it's piss-yourself hilarious! :D

Repeal the first amendment! :D

BWAHAHAHAHA~! :D

...but my major point from that was the fact that he said that 'America doesn't have a functioning democracy'.  Pretty strong words... but I guess only to me.  :o

Hey, I'm with you on that 110%! :D He's bang on the money there. But he sure as f*&k didn't help the situation with #2. His #2 really is a #2. :P :D

I fucking LOVE Mark Dice. He's HILARIOUS!

His videos are just off the hook insane.

If you want to piss yourself laughing... Check out more.

If you don't find them funny... There's something very wrong with you. :P

Get ready to piss yourself laughing...

Why we believe Americans are stupid.

For a bit of perspective on the Stasi vs. the NSA:

http://falkvinge.net...rse-and-by-how-much/

So where the hated Stasi surveillance was a building in area, the NSA surveillance today is an entire continent.

As a final note, the word Stasi was a contraction of the East German surveillance agency’s full name, Ministerium für Staatssicherheit. It translates to National Security Agency.

In the immortal words of Darth Vader, "Impressive."

Living Room / Re: Government spies on Twitter
« Last post by Renegade on July 19, 2013, 07:30 AM »
How about Twitter spying on people? I've set up a Twitter account with my Hotmail account years ago, but I do not use it. Twitter have kept sending me emails about feeds they thought I might be interested in, which were usually related topically to a handful of feeds I'd subscribed to, all of which are based on my academic interests (and are not from my local area).

However, today there was a new twist: Twitter sent me an email saying I might be interested in the feeds of my local council. How on earth did they figure out where I live? I barely log on to Twitter (maybe 3-4 times a year to do a search), and I only do it on my PC. Is that based on my IP address or they're doing something different?

Big Data works a number of ways:

  • IP address
  • Cookies
  • Physical address
  • Email address
  • Loyalty cards
  • Darn near any service provider
  • Account IDs
  • etc.
  • etc.

A lot of those are already tied together. The trick is just to get what you need tied together, and that's not too hard.

For example, you login to your Twitter account. You then visit some site. Done. You've just allowed a tracking company to put 2 and 2 together. They now know your email address. They link that data up with a partner tracking company. They now know your physical address. Rinse & repeat and they know what you buy at the grocery store because you use a loyalty card. etc. etc.

That's a pretty crude description, but it about sums it up.
