Living Room / Re: CPU 100%
« Last post by mouser on June 24, 2006, 02:00 PM »
it would be easier with a screenshot (like jgpaiva says try screenshot captor).

but i don't see any processes using 100% of your cpu.

maybe we should ask this preliminary question instead:

you stated in your post:
"My CPU constantly hits 100%"

what makes you say that? what program told you that your cpu is hitting 100%.
does it tell you what process is running at 100%?

this is a nice list:

Here is a list of video lectures in computer science I had collected over the years.
This list is only two-thirds of all links I have in my bookmarks, I will go through the rest of links later. Check back.

we need a screenshot of the process listing showing which processes are using how much cpu.

install this:
http://www.sysintern...ProcessExplorer.html

and do a screenshot of that when you think you have 100% cpu use.

there is no reason your cpu should be so high. as javajones says, do a screenshot of cpu usage. (if you are on win2k or winxp, just hit ctrl+alt+del) to get the cpu usage screen and sort by cpu usage column.

i'd also point out that it is VERY important to compare with same settings -
by default dupetrasher does not seem to check file contents (crc values, etc).

if you compared 2 dupecheckers, one of which was making and checking hash values, and one of which was not, you would expect the one that didn't to be a LOT faster.

as a side note, people should probably avoid saying program x is 10 times better/faster/cuter than program y, unless there are some real reasons to back up that number :)

well there are other things a dupechecker has to do that could benefit from highly optimized code (crc creation and hash lookup)..

i'm genuinely afraid of the concept of complicated programs written in assembly, but hey if they did it, more power to them.

dupetrasher definitely looks worth a try.

yes there sure is.  and if you make sure to get the latest beta version you have lots of options regarding tray messages.
31061
just load a web page like:
https://www.donation.../Software/index.html

to see some CodyQuotes in action :)
31062
the google ads are on the forum (and only the forum) for now; we may remove them completely but at least they provide some entertainment factor on the forum.

i dont think it makes sense to put the codyquotes on the forum, they would just be a bit annoying after a while seeing them over and over again.
31063
yep, same setting affects forum and pages.
31064
you can as a member turn back on such "ads", just read how here:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1228.0
31065
and as full members you don't see ads anyway.

but as far as the new feature - you aren't really missing out on anything.
the quotes are from: https://www.donation...om/About/quotes.html

i'm a big believer in planning out programs and structures, but like most of life, it depends on your goals and the scope/timeframe of your project.

i think this kind of approach makes most sense in terms of the famous idea to "plan to throw one away [because you will anyway]".

the idea being that you can't really anticipate and plan everything, so you are better off just plunging right in and expecting that you will learn a lot in the process, and write the *real* permanent code later and throw the initial code away.

if this is your approach, i think it makes a lot of sense to just jump right in, as a learning excercise.

OR

if it's a small enough project and you are a good enough coder (or have written this kind of program before) you may get away with a one-shot fast coding project.

learning what will work and learning how to anticipate issues, and learning what kinds of program and data structures will work for a task is really most of the difference between someone who has been programming fro 15 years vs. someone who has been programming for 2 years.  as you get better you will be able to see and anticipate things that new programmers won't.

For bigger projects though, i'd always recommend some planning, especially if you're not prepared to throw one away.. Otherwise it's far to easy to paint yourself into a corner and realize that the foundation of your code is fragile and not well suited to the task.

This issue is also particularly important when other people are going to be using your software.  It's far too easy to realize half way in that you are going to have to make some changes to the data files, etc., that will render the new version incompatible with the old.  people usually don't like to hear that.

beta update to version 1.10.02 is now released (1.10.01 had a bug).
has some minor but useful improvements.
31070
i'm going to move this to general software section, only because i know there are a bunch of such programs out there and i'd like to hear some more opinions about existing programs from general crowd here before people start trying to code this..

In November of 1928, a truck pulled up to The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and unloaded the pieces of an interesting, complex, but totally ruined brass machine. The family who donated it kept it for many years because they understood that it had once been able to write and draw pictures. The machine, however, had been in a fire and needed significant work. After careful study and restoration by staff, the Franklin Institute began to realize the treasure it had been given...

i found the simpsons one of the best cartoons i've ever seen, i don't consider Futurama as good.
Although i like to watch it, it doesn't stick me to the tv as the simpsons' magnificence does.

agreed.  i have enjoyed futurama but it never reached the profound level of genius that the simpsons is capable of.  not even close imho.

welcome to the site ellycp

yeah i want to echo this - from what i understand, it would be a big mistake to associate u3 with any kind of rootkit crazyness.  basically as i understand it they use some clever tricks to get the software on the usb drive to run the software as if it were installed, and these tricks share some of the same approaches as the sony rootkit, but in the case of u3 it's being use for good and not evil.

I'm sure you'll be keeping an eye on the donation stats, etc. and I imagine all (certainly myself) would be interested in hearing what kind of effect this has, if any.

well the new change has been in place for about a week and according to the stats, no one has donated from the new codyquotes page, so i guess we are losing about $35 a week from this change so far.. but i still believe this change is a good thing for the long run.
