Got it. For nuts like me, setting up a new system is as bad as moving to another apartment.

Living Room / BIOS flashing scares the crap out of me!
« Last post by zridling on July 29, 2005, 03:40 AM »
Having major surgery? That's nothing compared to the feeling I get working on my system. Installed some faster memory in my machine today and had to flash/update my BIOS to recognize it. I've never had a bad experience with BIOS flashes, but it's the one thing that makes me physically shake when doing it. I got so anxious waiting for the machine to fully reboot after 20 seconds of heart monitor-like beeps that I didn't breathe the whole time.

You so smart! And there I was thinking you'd be monitoring every download/keyfile 24/7. That should work really well, then.

To Re-Enable Right-Click When Web Pages Turn It Off, when visiting the offending website, type the following into the address bar of your browser:

javascript:void(document.oncontextmenu=null)

Well thought out, but won't this be a lot of administrative work on your part? If it's to work so that a greater number of visitors come to DCC, then perhaps a plan to submit the more popular freeware apps to SnapFiles or FileForum might begin in tandem with this step.

General Software Discussion / Unlock files because of sharing violations
« Last post by zridling on July 28, 2005, 03:29 AM »
From CNet:
Unlocker is an Explorer extension that allows you with a simple right-click of the mouse on a file or folder to get rid of error message such as error deleting file or folder, cannot delete folder: it is used by another person or program. Ever had such an annoying message given by Windows? Cannot delete file: Access is denied There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use. The file is in use by another program or user. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use....

This happens often after playing games or when DLLs get shared once too often. Unlocker is a nice donationware solution.

Living Room / Thank you DCC for the Best of Award on the Links Page!
« Last post by zridling on July 28, 2005, 03:16 AM »
mouser's Site of the Week Award of my Great Software List site this week and my twisted sick personality is dead on, and actually funny. I appreciate the recognition and am grateful to the communal effort started here at DCC. The first reason I support this endeavor is because you guys and VRGirl are making the world a better place in measurable ways. Most humanoids don't have the brainwidth to understand code and scripting (remember, Fortran kicked my ass and I never reconsidered the whole thing), much less write them. Keep studying and working hard, because you never know what kid out there you are influencing today to write code in the next decade. The second reason I keep coming back here is because DonationCoder.com is in many ways a natural extension of my site; that is, if you can't find great software, then consider building it, whether it's a grand effort or smallware. Smallware is often more important than ever because of its perfectability and its focus on function.

Long story short, thank you guys.

Living Room / Re: interesting article on "Software Pricing"

I read this twice, but couldn't really understand the author's point. Doesn't he understand that most people do not buy the extended warranty? NasDaq volutility and software pricing?

« Last post by zridling on July 26, 2005, 09:16 PM »
Damnit, I took Fortran in my first year of college — in 1980! — and I still say punch cards are the way to go. That course convinced me that I wanted nothing to do with computers. We actually turned in our punch cards to be compiled and graded. I'll never forget Apu Nahasapeemapetilon's doctoral dissertation that Bart ruined!

Wow, that's good news. Wonder why Yahoo did that? They did essentially the same thing with Yahoo Desktop Search when the licensed the X1 engine. Incredible.

Living Room / All you'll ever need is found in QBASIC
« Last post by zridling on July 26, 2005, 08:52 PM »
Whatever the latest programming language is of the day, all you ever need* is QBasic. If you can't do it in QBasic, then why bother!

*A nod to all those people who gripe that PhotoshopCS2/8 doesn't run on their Windows95 systems.

That's quite generous, but the graph is great! If I had $100 million, we'd ALL be living fat.

I finally finished reading every word of the AutoHotkey Help file this week, and will start on the forum for more. One thing I really like is that its developer, Chris Mallett, updates it continously in response to user requests and bugs. I've been able to ditch several commercial software apps now that I can do more with AutoHotkey. Thanks everyone, and thanks to skrommel for sharing.

Living Room / Time to gripe about slow, high-bandwidth websites
« Last post by zridling on July 23, 2005, 08:27 PM »
Though I'm not a big fan of CNET.com, I do visit once or twice a week to see what's new. But now with their latest site redesign, it has to be one of the worst and slowest online, comparable so ESPN.com or CNN/MSNBC/FAUX.com network sites. Do I really need a video "telling me" that Cnet has discovered a new gadget this week? (Mind you, I'm not innocent. My own site is slow in places, but only because I load up on nice, fat .png images for screenshots.)

Well, mouser, you've ruined another website! ;) When you visit the link it says, "The site you are looking for has exceeded its monthly bandwidth allowance." Fortunately, August is a week away.

General Software Discussion / DCC gets noticed again by Fred Langa
« Last post by zridling on July 23, 2005, 08:11 PM »
Rajeev Rohatgi wrote to Fred Langa who mentioned DCC and mouser's Find and Run Robot in his latest (2005-06-27) newsletter:
Dear Fred, My laptop has tons of installed programs (in fact, if I didn't categorize them into submenus, my Start/Programs directory would run into several columns beyond the right edge of my monitor screen). This creates a problem when I have to access a particular program...figuring out where exactly it's categorized, then navigating to it on my touchpad through several submenus, et al...but now I've discovered this great piece of freeware — Find and Run Robot — which searches for any installed program on the fly, as one types in the program name, and then launches it with a single keypress. It even searches for data files!
Way to go Rajeev! It was noted again in Langa's 2005-07-25 Plus letter (see correction below).

General Software Discussion / Got to love XSite
« Last post by zridling on July 21, 2005, 03:44 AM »
Chris Hanscom of Veign software has just released XSite, which proves simplicity is beauty. From the website:

XSite will load and parse any webpage into a simple structured view for displaying images, email addresses, and all links. Generate a result report that section out all the links, images, and email addresses. Easily grab all images in a web page by downloading them to a local folder....

XSite then lets you export lists to either CSV or TXT format which makes it easy to push the information into any database or drop it into any container application, such as your word processor if you like. An excellent tool for grasping both the scope of a site's links and its link structure. I love it!

Chris considers Veign software "postcardware," asking that you mail him a postcard if you use his freeware apps or simply make a donation.

If you haven't looked lately, check out the DonationCoder.com Links page — many "best of web" sites there and the page serves as a great start page for diving deep into the best software found.

Living Room / Tech trivia: Hedy Lamar avatar and her brains
« Last post by zridling on July 13, 2005, 10:54 PM »
For those unaware, Hedy Lamar is both the subject of my newest avatar and one of the tech geniuses of the 20th century who patented the spread spectrum that pioneered wireless networks and later developed into such trifles as cellphones and the Global Positioning System. Her work on wireless directly helped defeat Hitler and give the Allies a distinct advantage in WWII. If you've seen any of her films, you may have seen her in Samson and Delilah. In the previous version of CorelDRAW, she was the award-winning vector graphic that was used on the cover of all the program's CDs.

She gave great face onscreen, and when you have that kind of brain, then you're truly beautiful!
