Living Room / Re: Main hard drive in my PC died today suddenly
« Last post by Stoic Joker on February 02, 2012, 02:21 PM »
I'm afraid i don't use any realtime drive monitoring tools.. i should.

I wasn't either, which is why my first clue was a clicking noise (oops). But I am now using the RAID controller's monitoring utility which I hadn't had installed before (because I hate clutter). Which is how I caught the subsequent (incorrect drive) failures so quickly.

Despite the low-grade fiasco I went through getting a proper replacement drive. I still stand by my decision to use RAID5. Because even with the 4 array builds required before I finally ended up with the correct replacement drive ... My total down time was less than 10min. Data lost=0.

I also do regular backups of the really critical stuff to a file server, which also uses a RAID5 array.

I refuse to store a single byte in "the cloud", as I would frankly rather loose the data, than run the risk of having to explain its existence to some pompus ass in a robe...because the hosting provider got hosed in yet another bullshit sting operation.

also i must say one more example. the mighty Steve jobs is a legend. Because capitalist america love heroes of the money. Best trader who make more money is a legend. What about dennis Ritchie? He made a operating system with simple gui. He wrote a genius programming language the C. In last 30 years many program writen with c. But none give copyright to him. If he was taking patent price 50 bucks from each program written with C language and made the press release show by himself, he could be richer than bill gates and more famous than Steve jobs. That's a modern nikola tesla - Thomas edison story. Everyone appreciate businessman edisson for selling them lamp. But no one give any single cent to nikola tesla forinvention of A.C.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Citrix issue
« Last post by Stoic Joker on February 01, 2012, 06:57 AM »
The utility (best I could tell from a quick read) is for troubleshooting clipboard chaining issues. It appears from what you described above that Citrix isn't playing nice with CHS's attempts to be part of the CB chain (bogus output vs. no output). So... I figured it would be interesting to see what if any error/explanation it gave for feeding CHS ("Citrix ICA Client") a garbage string. Does it even see it as a valid part of the CB chain? Or is it ("intentionally") pragmatically ignoring it, because it's miffed about something?

Just a Thought :)

I've only encountered Citrix a few times, but a bit of Googling turned up a Citrix utility here that might be of some use.

Please just nuke the whole planet now. Why the slow descent into madness? Let's just get it over with...

Damnit man! Not until December! We can't be jumping the gun .... If we blow the planet too early the roaches won't be ready to sign the new lease ... And god knows who'll try to take over then (probably another bunch of stupid monkeys...).

Think 'avoidance conditioning' and it all becomes clear.

Just the fact that you knew the name of it - off the top of your head presumably - makes me a bit uneasy...  :(

But the "head on a stake" bit is truly an accurate description of the feds motive.

Well, I never saw any connection between "Sod's Law" and "Sod off".
British colloquialisms.
"The poor sods [unfortunate people] had to endure all that warfare in the trenches" <-- is Sod's Law. Something bad/unpleasant was likely to happen to you [an unfortunate person] as a result of enlisting or being conscripted into the army for WW2.

"Oh, sod it" <--a bad/unfortunate thing just happened to me. As in "Just my sodding luck." Similar to "Oh, bollocks."

"Sod off" <-- a very rude imperative to "go away". ("Sod" in this case coming from "Sodomite".) Similar in intent to "F*** off" or "Bugger off".

You don't need to paint your face with woad to use these expressions either.

Hm, okay...thanks. But I gotta say it does rather sound like groups 1 & 2 of your examples get screwed too. :)
3109
Is there any correlation between Sod's Law and the expression Sod Off?
Who were you directing the question to?    :D     :D   :D
Anyone that knows the answer ... I'm really just curious if one is the origin of the other.
3110
What could go wrong? Calculate the odds on this web page, using Sod's Law.

Is there any correlation between Sod's Law and the expression Sod Off?

I ran into this article at Forbes magazine. It's by Larry Downes and it's called: Who Really Stopped SOPA, and Why?

Damn! I loved the Declaration of Cyber Independence bit. We the planet says no (hehe).

It seems some have learned lessons from history that would have been better left alone.
I've often felt that way. While it's been said that those that don't study history are doomed to repeat it (by popular pontiffs). It seems more the case that half fixate on the wrong parts with "righteous" indignation ... And the other half look at the ruthless dictators in history thinking Okay, good plan...but here's what they did wrong.

The mistakes just keep get improved on...not learned from.

General Software Discussion / Re: ZOOM setting reminder ?

By the way, I omitted to mention in my post that, in Firefox, pressing Ctrl+Shift+"+"keys together zooms the text only, whereas Ctrl+"+" keys zoom text and images.

That could be quite handy for sites with many/large pictures for reading small fonted comments.

Hi, Stoic Joker, I have IE9 but I can't seem to locate your suggested setting.   :-[   Is it in Internet Options/Advanced?

Sometimes... Windows and I don't see eye-to-eye about how to word stuff... so I may be staring right at it. Is it listed as 'Enable view statusbar?

Yes, kinda :)

In the IE9 menu it is: View->Toolbars->Statusbar

Note: I only brought up the older versions of IE earlier because IainB seemed to be pondering (aloud) how long the hotkeyed zoom feature had been available.

I am not all that familiar with Internet Explorer, but I just now verified that this works in my verison of Internet Explorer (IE9). At a guess, it would probably be a standard for most browsers/versions.

Yes, I've been using many of these since IE7. I actually like the Ctrl + Mouse wheel to zoom quickly, and then Ctrl + 0 (not the Num Pad one - It don't work) to get back to "normal".

They also mentioned wanting a "Zoom Indicator". Enable view statusbar and it will be in the bottom right-hand corner.

You're all a bit paranoid. I just use the word "password" for all my passwords. It's never failed me yet...

What? I thought Open Sesame was the universal password...  :D
3117
Sorry man. Can't help it. I'm a BOFH.

Me to (e.g. I can't get yelled at about bw usage), hence the initial response.

P.S. - where's the "fun" in lower profile? Cows may come, and cows may go - but when the cobras begin to strike you want to firing magnum double-loads. Remember: you can only be punished if there are survivors left to do the punishing.

First it's "Not worth it"/risky...Then LP is no "fun"/to weak...  :-\ Okay, now your just screwing with me.  :D
3118
Oh don't be so practical, I'm trying to have fun (there's always lower profile alternatives). :)

I was Just at a new client this morning that was using password as the password for the administrator account. They thought it was just fine because they'd renamed the Administrator account to something "clever"... *Sigh* ...Apparently they've also never heard of (the built-in account) GUIDs.

Search the server logs to find out what IP the scraper is coming from. Then setup a redirector that will send that IP/them something they will never forget (like 90GB of garbage files) the next time they come by for a scraping.

FWIW :)

Does anyone understand the differences in the Western Digital drives? mention WDTLER.exe and WDIDLE.exe if you can find them.

Yeah, I know ...(thought about it several times)... But I couldn't find the damn thread.  :D

Passphrase: Does cam low profile alter valve train component acceleration?

(Sorry about the side track, but...(this is gonna bug me)) I'd have to go with yes. Acceleration of the reciprocal mass is controlled by the ramp contour of the lobe. So a low profile cam would have a smoother transition and therefore open the valves more slowly. IIRC (It's been a while). Maybe best to PM me so we don't side track the thread.

Well Duh!!

Critical: WD Caviar Black, Caviar Green, and Caviar Blue hard drives are not recommended for and are not warranted for use in RAID environments utilizing Enterprise HBAs and/or expanders and in multi-bay chassis, as they are not designed for, nor tested in, these specific types of RAID applications. For all Business Critical RAID applications, please consider WD’s Enterprise Hard Drives that are specifically designed with RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER), are tested extensively in 24x7 RAID applications, and include features like enhanced RAFF technology and thermal extended burn-in testing.
-WD Support

The set of 3 WD3200YS drives I was using are/were Enterprise class RE (Raid Edition) devices.

RTFM ... It's not just a catchy phrase.

(yes, I feel stupid)

Cable? Controller fritzing? Mechanical/electrical differences between different drive models and manufacturers? (My guess.)

Chapter Three... (God Damn it...)

All drives in this saga have been WD, but obviously they're not playing well together for some reason.
