Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Using the "Quick Add Note" hotkey
« Last post by mouser on July 02, 2006, 12:08 AM »
the quick note adding is not implemented yet.
however you can add new notes by click the "add new note" button in the main window and it will appear instantly.  i have to implement the quick add soon.

many of my programs suffer from poort options display at 120dpi, it's normal and i'm still looking for the best solution.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Best Feature

i'd say the most non-obvious but useful feature is that you can make "alias groups", which act like menus of a specific set of programs.

for example, you can make an alias group called "games" and place your favorite games in it, and then when you type "games" it will present you with a list of these items to choose from.

other features that may not be obvious:
you can drag and drop files found into other programs.
you can use the function keys or alt+# keys to launch programs.
you can customize the appearance skin.

most importantly:
we are very much debating features for v2 so please do feel free to post them on one of the v2 discussion threads in this section.

the problem you describe with paypal seems to be of the nature of the other paypal complaints i've heard, which is that if you are unlucky enough to get flagged by them as having an account that they are "concerned" about in some way, it seems they don't handle it well.

carol - ROFL those are funny.

wrt to the linux one - i was just teasing gjehle and getting out some frustrations about a recent fight i had with the nameserver configuration of our server.. i still think linux is wonderful.

i very much doubt google is doing any shipping tracking.  i see no signs of it.

paypal has come in for some criticism but over the years i have to say i have been extremely satisfied.  they have proven to me at least that they know what they are doing, and do it well.  their fees are lower than anyone (except perhaps google now!).

i will list some things paypal does that google doesn't yet:
great refund system, user-chosen donation amounts, full subscription-based system (for scheduling regular payments), easily download history in quicken/csv/etc format.

paypal could really use some simplification and re-organization of their website and account pages - i expect google checkout may force them to do so, which would be good.

i will wait and see how google handles this.. but right now i am very satisfied with paypal and interested in the features it has that google checkout doesnt.

having said that, it's not hard to support both, and i think people will be inclined to trust google payment system - so if people are happy with it, we're happy to support it here.

Is there anyway to disable automatic network detector,it's giving me the fits,is there something in the
setting.ini i can tweak?
-tinyvillager (July 01, 2006, 06:58 PM)

you can absolutely disable it - just go to advanced mode and in options you can disable automatic network detection.

can you tell me how it is failing?
(note: it connects to donationcoder.com and downloads a one line text file to detect network sniffing ability so if you block that you will confuse it.)

hahah, great find.

all good points -
carol you also forgot the big one: paypal.
paypal has been offering a single account for buying all kinds of things and has been pretty widely adopted.

google seems quite trustworthy, and some competition for paypal might be a good thing for everyone, so it could be a really nice thing in the end for everyone.. a little early to say..

i think we are going to see more and more of them both in free online games, and commercial boxed games, and commercial online rollplaying games.

i left google ads on the forum - only because they are mildly interesting in relation to the topics (either usefully on topic or amusingly off topic), or else for charities.

and i thought people would get very sick of seeing the same cody quotes constantly on the forum.  so little money is made from the forum ads though, that i may just remove them completely.  opinions are welcome.

great post app, i love this quote from the summary:

Eon8 (a mysterious site that developed a creeping sense of inevitable doom, thanks to some nifty tricks employed by the site creator) was simply an experiment - the guy who made the site just wanted to see what people would do faced with a lack of information. The answer was - go absolutely freaking insane.

the objective is to get the guys home from work safely!

they have to make that trip every day to work  :o

oh my that is one hazardous job  ;D ;D ;D

really amazing work you guys have done - you've both captured perfectly the retro feel of the best old school console games, while at the same time combining elements of different games and introducing your own novel stuff as well, to create a game that feels familiar but at the same time is clearly something new.  really brilliantly done

DonationCoder.com is based on the idea of people talking about software they love.  and we also welcome authors to talk about their work.  so there is nothing wrong with lavishing praise on programs you like.  but you MUST, absolutely *MUST* make clear any relation or appearance of conflict of interest that you might have with a company whose software you are writing about.  And we welcome authors telling us about their software and how great it is, they just have to make clear they are talking about their own work.

Interesting post about an issue we have discussed before here, companies paying people to write positive reviews.

This is of course a problem in all writing and review sites.  Everyone please remember as always to disclose any financial or reciprocal relationship you might have that is in any way related to any software or service you review or recommend!

PayPerPost is a great new way to lose your credibility as a blogger - the service will pay you to write reviews of new products and services. Advertisers post “opportunities” on the site - they can specify whether the post should have pictures, and even request a positive review. That last part really crosses the line, and it’s sure to destroy any credibility you have as a writer. PayPerPost will pay more if you have a high-trafficked blog, but anyone who has spent time building up an audience would be crazy to take part.

Ted Murphy, the founder of PayPerPost, has actually been at this for a while - his BlogStar Network used to contact bloggers via email and pay them $5 to $10 per post. Positive reviews were encouraged. He sees the new system as a way to streamline the process.

PayPerPost is a terrible, terrible idea and totally unethical. But I know this stuff has been going on for a long time. Every so often, you’ll see a spate of blog comments around the blogosphere that promote certain brands - they call them “buzz” campaigns. Paying for posts is a natural evolution. And while no serious content creators will take them up on the offer, I’m deeply concerned they’ll tap into the long-tail of unethical bloggers, polluting the Google results and fooling unsuspecting readers.
