« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2006, 04:55 AM »
i was actually pretty happy with the upgrade from 9x to ME.
but the move to 2k/xp resulted in a really dramatic improvement in experience.

wow this one is really well done and cool.  highly recommended, especially for people who want a nice combination of casual play and fun stealth puzzle solving, plus some nice violent neck snapping action  8)

The best way to get 8-bit sounds is to employ a real NES system or Game Boy for fifteen bucks and go to town — nothing else sounds quite the same. But for the next best thing, and the ability to do evil things to those sounds within a serious host, this free plug-in from Japan that will do the job.

tool for creating grids  :tellme:
if you include a bunch of grids then 99.9% of users will never need to make their own, and writing a tool to help the .01% of pro users seems a waste of time.  just my humble opinion.  in other words, let nudone suffer  :P

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: OCR & paste
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2006, 12:27 AM »
i actually looked into this using an open source ocr tool, but it did such a bad job of ocr that i ditched the idea.
do remember that screenshot captor has lots of functions for adding 3rd party commandline tools as menu items so if someone has an ocr tool that works via commandline, you could interface it.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: MS Virtual PC is now free
« Last post by mouser on July 12, 2006, 02:49 PM »
this is not a commentary on monopoly, but it's important to note that the vmware equivelant of virtualpc (vmware workstation) has never been free, its $200.
30761
i actually agree - im not one for hotkeys most of the time i prefer dragging and dropping.  i just never have good luck with the edge docking effects with my multimonitor setups.  i actually like the titlebar thing.

jgpaiava has got multimon support in the last gridmove really working well - very impressive work.

this is big news.. it's sure to cause some serious ripples.
i personally prefer vmware workstation to virtualpc a little bit, BUT the difference is not that great, and vmware workstation is not at all cheap.  MS offering virtual pc free is a BIG deal.

everyone should install this.

Paul Graham wrote a book called "Hackers and Painters" (http://www.paulgraham.com/hackpaint.html)
he publishes interesting essays online that might be worth a read.

From "What Business Can Learn from Open Source" (http://www.paulgraha....com/opensource.html)
...
The third big lesson we can learn from open source and blogging is that ideas can bubble up from the bottom, instead of flowing down from the top. Open source and blogging both work bottom-up: people make what they want, and the best stuff prevails.
Does this sound familiar? It's the principle of a market economy. Ironically, though open source and blogs are done for free, those worlds resemble market economies, while most companies, for all their talk about the value of free markets, are run internally like communist states.
There are two forces that together steer design: ideas about what to do next, and the enforcement of quality. In the channel era, both flowed down from the top. For example, newspaper editors assigned stories to reporters, then edited what they wrote.
Open source and blogging show us things don't have to work that way. Ideas and even the enforcement of quality can flow bottom-up. And in both cases the results are not merely acceptable, but better. For example, open source software is more reliable precisely because it's open source; anyone can find mistakes.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Print-out size-problem
« Last post by mouser on July 12, 2006, 07:05 AM »
abterix we miss seeing more of you here :)

ok can you explain a bit more about what you mean about a reasonable print?

so the print modes of norma, stetch, fit are not satisfactory -> what would you like instead?

maybe this hint will be useful:
use mode "fit to page"
and set larger margins (top panel).
30766
are you asking for suggestions for a new name or is GridMove the final name?
I was thinking: ScreenZones or ZoneDropper
30767
i use titlebar method with gridmove currently and not edge dragging since it seems more stable..
i do think that a hotkey based approach might be fasted though.. select a window, hit hotkey - zone labels show up on screen, hit # key associated with the zone to move it to and it's done.  wouldn't this be the fastest way to use it?

Living Room / Re: Help with Visual studio 6 "crash" and lost changes
« Last post by mouser on July 12, 2006, 04:13 AM »
sorry for your suffering urlworlf!
things like this can be so traumatic i know.. i've been brought to tears from less.

i don't have any specific help regarding visual studio - but best advice would be don't start the program again, and go to the temp directory in windows and look for recent files.

if you cannot find recovery files, my best meta advice is this: just hold your nose and dive right in and redo the code you lost.  the sooner you do it, the fresher it will be in your mind, and the sooner you can put it behind you as a bad memory/lesson.  the longer you put it off the more it will haunt you.  then tell yourself never again to spend more than 15 minutes in ANY program without saving a copy.

I thought up a really cool idea for a little javascript widget that would be useful on software web pages.

The idea:
One often wants to put up thumbnail screenshots on a software page.  The typical approach is to make a thumbnail of the page.
Sometimes however the results is too small to see, so instead you'll see a 100% normal zoom of a corner of the image, like so:
mycaps Screenshot - 001 , 12_46_AM , Jul 12 2006.png

So i was thinking it would be nice if, instead of requiring designer to make such a mini corner image - what if you could use a java script on a web page to say: "take this full sized image, and show it in a box of size X by Y, and let the user pan the images with the mouse".

so a user could actually click and drag the image around inside the box.

Does this exist yet? Any javascript coders want to give it a try?

hi marcsl - glad to see you entering the contest

i've never heard of doing this kind of iteration of functions.. is it something that has a history? are there any other web pages talking about it?  it might be nice to have some more sample functions or sample values - it took me a while before i figured out how to get it to work..
