Just visited the supporter yearbook and sorted by post count. Each page has 15x4=60 members... Page three is the cutoff (user Smirf with 53 posts, while Clive and Dormouse have 47 each). By my *rough* calculation, there are 159 users with 50 or more posts!

The famous 1934 'doctor's photo' of the Loch Ness Monster,
revealed in 1994 to be a hoax involving a toy submarine.

Heh, heh, maybe that should be 'doctored photo'  ;D

I thought that was a typo for "Dumber number"  :-[...

Ah ha! It WAS a typo - Dunbar's number! Am I partially vindicated?

Anyway, reading your post, urlwolf, I am intrigued. I do WONDER how many of the appox. DC 110,000 members are active, say, one a week?

Chaim - perhaps I am misreading wraith's point #2, but he seems to be suggesting what I do, which is to install windows and all of my programs to the same partition (C: in my case) and move My Documents and other data files to a second partition (E: in my case) - I don't think he's suggesting that one install the OS on one partition and apps on another? I've seen this mentioned elsewhere and, like you, have never understood the point, beyond a possible benefit to be derived from having a very small windows partition that would be good for... what? Quick defragmentation runs? I'm reaching here...

This is how I did my 'scary toolbars', that always seems to freak people out.

Personally, I need no other reason than wraith808's point 2 above. I partitioned my 120GB drive EXACTLY as mouser has suggested and moved all of my internet settings and e-mail files onto the data partition. I take regular images of the Windows and Programs partition (C:) and backup my data to a 500GB external drive. I can't comment on the performance angle as I've not noticed any difference...

I hate cell/mobile/hand phones. I have one because it's nice to have on in the car for emergencies (I commute across Vancouver Island, the centre of which can be very isolated) but I can't see the attraction otherwise. All I see are hideous contacts (Canada's cell phone rates are among the highest in the world) and yahoos yapping on the things at 150 km/h while trying to negotiate traffic and corners. Scary. Usually these people have kids in the car as well... Absolutely infuriating

Definitely outside the realm of our usual conversations here, but Fidel Castro has just announced that he's stepping down as president of Cuba after almost 50 years of rule...

Hmm... thanks for the input, guys. I guess I'm off to Staples tomorrow with a vacant - yet exasperated - expression on my face... My wife's company provided notebook is fine over the period that her personal notebook is gone so we won't miss it. I've realised, too, that if they do conclude that the damage isn't covered I don't have to have them do the work, I can just request that they ship it back to me. My only remaining qualm is that they might charge me for the inspection?

If it helps clarify things, I bought Staples extended warranty when I bought the notebook, so it's not at this point the manufacturer that will be taking this on...

Living Room / Hardware advice sought... Notebook power supply problem
« Last post by Darwin on February 18, 2008, 04:27 PM »
My soon to be six year old and his friend dumped my wife's *just* upgraded and spiffied up two and a half year old Compaq Presario R4225 notebook on the floor recently. The power cord was plugged in and the notebook landed on it, loosening the power supply thingy on the motherboard. Great. NO ONE will fix it locally - everyone wants to sell us a new one or send it to Ontario (I'm in BC) and charge me big money to solder the "power supply thingy" back onto the motherboard. I did find one electronics shop that will do the soldering but won't disassemble it. None of the computer repair shops in town will disassemble it for me, either. So... should I:

1. Take the advice of the last repair shop that I spoke with, who suggested that I take it back to the vendor and play dumb and see if they'll replace it/fix it (my guess is that this is going to simply massively prolong the length of time my wife is without it and wind up costing us serious cash. Note, however, that this is my wife's personal notebook and she still has use of her employer provided notebook so taking our time with it isn't the end of the world), as it is still covered by the three year extended warranty that I bought. I'm not seriously considering this option.

2. I have the pdf version of the maintenance manual and could disassemble it myself and deliver the motherboard to the electronics shop for repair. This is the option I'm seriously considering.

Thus, does anyone seriously think that there is any point in trying to get this done under extended warrarnty? Does anyone think that I have a hope of successfully stripping the computer down the the motherboard and reassembling it after repair? I'm quite comfortable doing this but I don't have much in the way of workspace and would need to sort out storage of the screws and things... Basically, I just need some reassurance  :o

EDIT: typo in the subject line  :-[

General Software Discussion / Re: Maxthon (web browser) resource utilization...
« Last post by Darwin on February 18, 2008, 03:31 PM »
I have no problems clipping stuff from Firefox into EverNote, and the EverNote WebClipper addon appears in my firefox addon (and the "add to EverNote" option appears in FF context menu).

That's how I use Evernote with Maxthon, actually - via the context menu. No doubt there is a plug-in for the toolbar but I don't need it. The *only* thing keeping me with NetSnippets is that I bought it! - OK two things - and that I have such a huge collection of Snippets that it is convenient to access and view via the NetSnippets sidebar. Really, though, it's not a deal breaker.

@Curt - I seem to have tamed the beast as I have 15 tabs open (mostly different DC threads, but also a Google search page, Outlook Exchange webmail, and Windows Secrets), and all is well. I'm still going to play around with Opera - I like it a lot. The main advantage of FF for me are the plugins and the fact that stuff like Evernote will still work from the context menu (I'll have to check out Opera for that, but I doubt that it does.  I'll be interested to see what FF 3 looks like. I decided not to run the latest beta but might take a look...

Finally, just to note, I've been using Ad-Muncher for years and always disable Ad Hunter in Maxthon... so it wasn't that!

Nice! Thanks for that, nontroppo. I'm still seduced by Opera (I have the beta for 9.5 installed).. If I do switch, I'll probably switch to FF as my primary browser because I suspect that all the plugins I like in Maxthon have analogues/workarounds in FF. I'll keep Opera around and perhaps will one day wean myself onto it!

FWIW I spent yesterday uninstalling A LOT of applications and cleaning up and everything is much better. I suspect that there was a conflict somewhere...

In descending order, the plugins I use in Maxthon/IE are:

Roboform (FF plugin for this available)
Evernote (FF plugin?)
Netsnippets (FF plugin?)

Features:

Mouse gestures (I know that there are plugins for FF available, and I could revisit StrokeIt, but Maxthon's implementation of it is how I "cut me teeth" and I'm too lazy to learn/reconfigure an alternative)
Groups (particularly Startup)

There they are - my little quirks exposed...  :-[

Grorgy liked it so much that he bought the company! No, wait, that was Victor Kiam... Grorgy liked the freebie that was given away by vunet last year (version 3, I believe) so much that he sprung for the upgrade to version 5. I know that there are other users here who will able to comment!

I'm not really that concerned about RAM usage - it's the hit to my CPU that is frustrating me. As an aside - the VM that I am quoting *seems* to be roughly analogous to Process Explorer's Private Bytes, which is why I quoted it. Doing so is force of habit, more than anything else because, as just mentioned, it's the CPU utilization that is causing me to break out into hives.

My initial post in this thread was seeking exactly this kind of comment, nontroppo, so thank you! I am very tied to IE/Maxthon because of some plugins that I use. These have analogues in Opera and FF so I'm just being lazy... (or at least stuck in my ways)! As noted above (ie in an earlier posting) Opera has already impressed me for its speed.

Oh yeah... at idle, but with Outlook minimized to the tray, my notebook has 69 processes running. Don't worry, folks, I've seen the light and have already uninstalled 20 apps this afternoon and am still plugging away ("only" 337 installed at the moment...) at it. Next up is a re-evaluation of what runs on system start - the little Bluetooth app that hogs about 50 MB of RAM continuously is looking attractive for the axe - I only use it to grab pictures off my phone!
