I haven't tried the others yet, but SpiderOak seems reasonable to me.. Relatively straightforward and gives you control over what it's doing.  Seems to be a fair match with my use case -- selectively identifying which files/folders I want backed up, rather than defaulting to backing up everything. And by default keeping all versions.

Im checking out SpiderOak now.  The limitation of 1tb but ulimited pcs might better match my use case, where I don't really need to backup everything.  I can live with only having good frequent versioned backups of my active documents protected in case of a crash or unexpected loss.

Someone may have mentioned this already, but backblaze limits versioned backups saved to 30 days.  Versions older than that are lost forever.  I consider that to be a serious deficiency.

So one thing that I notice that differentiates the alternatives is whether they are PRICE-PER-PC or PRICE-PER-TERRABYTE.

If you want to back up more than 1 pc (say a laptop, your desktop, etc.), then these price-per-pc plans get very expensive, very quickly.

Carbonite is $60/pc per year, or $270/year for unlimited pcs.

Backblaze is $50/pc.  No option for family or multi-pc plans?

Spider Oak is $120/year for all pcs, but capped to 1 tb total; or $279/yr capped to 5tb.

Crashplan is closing up soon, and I have to migrate away.. What's the current thinking regarding the best alternative?

Both of the issues you mention, importing creating duplicates and sync not being reliable, sound like they may be related to items that look like they are the same but not being seen as the same.
Normally this can get solved by making sure both versions of WhenLast are up to date and then syncing and cleaning up the data.
If you can find a repeatable problem let me know.

Interesting essay on how running an antivirus could actually open you up to some risks..

Antivirus programs, in many cases, make us safer on the Internet. Other times, they open us to attacks that otherwise wouldn't be possible. On Friday, a researcher documented an example of the latter—a vulnerability he found in about a dozen name-brand AV programs that allows attackers who already have a toehold on a targeted computer to gain complete system control.

Oh he's still there.. lots of different versions of cody will be found at the top of the sidebars on different pages.

What looks better for the sidebar of "Latest Forum Posts" (generated from rss) that are shown on some of the new dc cms pages?
(These are items that are always taken from the board section related to the page you are on so they are useful information).

Living Room / Re: Does anyone here use Bitcoins?

Due to encouragement of the bitcoin evangelists here on DC I did eventually provide a bitcoin address for people who wanted to donate to DC via bitcoin, back in 2015.

There have been a total of 12 payments received in that 2 year period.

Total received from those 12 payments was 287mBTC which apparently is worth about $2,000 USD currently

One of the improvements to the new cms site is that it should look pretty responsive on small screens (mobile devices) now, with the sidebars hiding and the top nav bar menu collapsing.
3091
you could set rules up so that if you copied something from a specific program a specific rule would get run on the text automatically?
No such feature exists in CHS.

General Software Discussion / Windows 10 free upgrade loophole closing in December
« Last post by mouser on November 07, 2017, 04:35 AM »
There is still a way to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, but there won't be for long..

If you haven’t yet switched to Windows 10, either by upgrading your current PC or by buying a new one, it’s not too late to do so for free. That is if you’re reading this before the end of 2017, when Microsoft has decided to end free Windows 10 upgrades for good. So, you’d best act quickly…  Unfortunately for anyone yet to take advantage of the assistive technologies workaround, Microsoft has announced it’s ending the free upgrade offer on December 31, 2017...

Sounds like I need to correct the hover over hint for that one -- it means it will check the screenshot and if it's all one solid color it will not save it.

Just because it isn't running automatically doesn't mean it wasn't installed for all users.  You need to configure my apps to run at startup -- by default they don't start automatically when windows boots.

The real question is.. some of you crazy people who were ranting about it, and telling us how bitcoin was going to take off during the early days of it.. are any of you rich enough to retire and bankroll the rest of us yet?
