Living Room / What are your favorite RSS Feeds?
« Last post by mouser on July 21, 2006, 02:47 PM »
KPR asked people to post their favorite RSS feeds, but due to an evil downloader tool, the thread was deleted.
I hearby repost the rss feeds people suggested and reinstate the thread from a backup.  Rather then restore the missing posts verbatim i will just post the summaries.

holograms, lol.  i don't think so.
i think its some carefully engineered clothing and those special sheets have the clothing sewn in so you can just slip into them.

farr really wasnt meant to stay on screen all the time -- though i supose i could consider an option for that.

HOWEVER, there are times when you want to launch an app, and then maybe another, etc. without it closing, and there is a way to do this.  go top options->interface->extra hotkeys and configure which activation mode should launch an app and stay open.

Developer's Corner / Joel On Software: "It's not about me!"
« Last post by mouser on July 21, 2006, 10:54 AM »
Joel Spolsky runs a software company, and he writes very well on the subject of software.  He has written some insightfull articles that we've talked about on this site.

But he is an incessant and unrelenting self-promoter.  Which seems undeniable unless you ask Joel himself.

This section of an interview from a new book by Bob Walsh on Indie Software Vendors just cracked me up.
They are talking about blogs and marketing, and the subject comes around to Joel's blog:
Q: "Do blogs fit there?"
Joel: "Tell me whose blog.  On my blog, I don't attempt to blog for the purpose of marketing."
Q: "So PR is free and low price.  It may be your blog, or it may not be."
Joel: "I don't think a blog can do marketing"
...
Q: "Well, what would you say about Joel on Software then?" [joel's blog]
Joel: "Ah! You see this is sort of different. Joel on Software is editorial not on the subject of my business."

A fun drinking game is to visit joel's blog and drink every time you see a story that promotes his own software or books.. but please kids don't play this game unless you can afford to sleep off a nasty drunk at a friends house.

http://www.joelonsoftware.com/

All kidding aside, joel is a great writer.  but come on joel, your blog is not on the subject of your business, and it has nothing to do with marketing.  that's a good one.

Living Room / Mario Brothers Epic Flash Opera Series
« Last post by mouser on July 21, 2006, 10:22 AM »
ok look, if you have played the mario brothers series you owe it to yourself to watch these animated movies.
sometimes you have to just sit back and appreciate the creativity and devotion on display by some people.

what amazed me most here was this guy's serious skills as a story teller.  i just finished part 5. wow.
caveat: if you've never player these games on a nintendo then these movies might not pack the same emotional punch.

UrlSnooper / Re: Illegal Operation message under W98SE
« Last post by mouser on July 21, 2006, 08:34 AM »
the clue that you have other programs that use winpcap is a big clue.
there is really nothing else in url snooper that i can think of that should be incompatible with win9x, so as long as winpcap is working it should work.

the fact that it runs fine the first time is an interesting clue, like maybe the error has to do with loading the configuration file.

i am going to investigate this weekend - if i can't find anything i will ask your help in testing some theories.

the change has now been made.
let me know if you encounter any issues.

Question: Does SC start up when you doubleclick the "wrong" icon?

this is the key question - because the icon is for the setup program.

here is my guess:
the setup program and the main exe are named the same.
so it's just that windows has cached the icon (this happens somtimes).
i dont remember an easy way to refresh the icon cache, but
when you restart windows next it will be correct icon.

btw: if you plan to leave sc running in the tray at all times like many of us (and check the option in sc to start with windows), then you dont even want that icon on your desktop and you can delete it.  you can always start sc from the start menu.

note: the other thing about unicode image maker embedded text boxes is you can double click them from within screenshot captor to edit the text again.
30591
that is really strange.. i had no idea that the arrow text could do it actually.

I made Unicode Image Maker tool for making text boxes of this type; once you configure it to use from within screenshot captor you should see a button for it from the CLIP ART object button panel where you can easily create new text boxes that use chinese text etc.

the original system of 10 donationcredits per 1 US dollar seemed like a good idea at the time but is unnesc. confusing.
we will be moving to a 1:1 equivelance in the next couple of days.

if all of the conversions go smoothly then it shouldn't inconvenience anyone and you'll just notice that your credits are now expressed as dollars (or partial dollars).  so if you had 100 credits, now you will have 10.00 credits (equal to $10).

hopefully this will be simpler for everyone.

Site/Forum Features / Re: Wanted: Cody Cartoons
« Last post by mouser on July 20, 2006, 05:41 PM »
i had a brilliant idea:
what about getting story ideas based on topics and websites mentioned on the forum!!!

this would be an endless source of new content.

for example here was a recent post on a website that will call you in the future:
https://www.donation...index.php?topic=4437

so a comic strip idea might involve cody using that service..

benefits:
topical
constant source of new ideas
the strips could be sent to those websites as a fun gift

confession
ok have to confess: this was rover's idea mentioned in irc chat channel

Why does clipboard do when it goes out to the internet?
not sure what you mean - chs does NOT connect out to the internet. there is no auto update and no phone home behavior.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature Request - Find folder names
« Last post by mouser on July 20, 2006, 03:54 PM »
this is similar to how i was thinking of things.

additionally i was thinking if your search string ends in \
it will show matching FOLDER (DIRECTORY) names.

so if you type
get\

it would display the full paths of all folders ending in budget\

if you typed \budget\ it will display full paths of all paths ending in \budget\

it gets more interesting when you have multiple paths
like \pro\find\*.exe
you might want it to match
\program files\find and run\*.exe files

Find And Run Robot / Re: Thoughts of a new comer
« Last post by mouser on July 20, 2006, 03:20 PM »
- Aliases: bad, bad, bad. A software that users this approach will encounter 2 major hits/setbacks. First, there is an overhead to create and organize aliases. Second, there is the expensive operation to remember the alias as you need it. It just does not work. For one software, I had created 100 aliases. How on earth I'm supposed to remember all.

well you'll notice one of the special things about farr is that you can just type name of program and dont need to add aliases.

but it does support the idea of custom aliases which let you use regular expressions and groups/menus, launch web searches, etc.

ps a trick:
type: agroups
to see a list of all known aliases.

well i actually agree with amadawn (and nontroppo made similar suggestion); holding out till everything is figured out is a recipe for endless internal debate.  releasing intermediate attempts is a good idea and i'm going to try to do that, it's just easier said than done and sometimes the internal debate about alternatives can paralyze you.

Dreamweaver is expensive and takes time to learn)!

i have a horrible confession:
d.martin sent me an amazing review of inexpensive html editors that has been awaiting my editing for over a month!
i'm going to try to get it done and published in july.
