The latest version has features added to make LaunchBar Commander suitable for use on a removable drive, like a usb stick.  You can now specify paths to commands relative to the current drive, or relative to the program.

Actually though, you really don't have to do anything special, just specify programs and documents as normal full paths and the program will automatically figure out to change the drive when you move it.

Note that you dont have to install the program either, just open the .exe setup program in a zip program like winzip and extract the contents and put them where you want.  The first time you enter a license code it will create a license key file you can take around with you.

« Last post by mouser on July 26, 2006, 08:41 AM »
ok, maybe i could add an option to not save the last image until you want to, and overwrite it if you capture multiple images in a row without saving.

beta tester report on new bookmark manager for firefox

Adaptiveblue has recently launched the public beta of Blueorganizer (http://www.adaptiveblue.com/) , a Firefox extension designed to help you organize and bookmark content on the web. I’ve been testing Blueorganizer ever since it’s initial private beta release and it’s a pretty solid tool with functionality that lets you bookmark more then just websites. You can look at it as a product smart bookmarking tool where if you are bookmarking a book from Barnes and Noble or a CD from Amazon.com, Blueorganizer will know and format the bookmark specific to that product.

Developer's Corner / The SCRUM development method
« Last post by mouser on July 25, 2006, 05:51 PM »
What is Scrum?

  • Scrum is an iterative, incremental process for developing any product or managing any work. It produces a potentially shippable set of functionality at the end of every iteration. It's attributes are:
  • Scrum is an agile process to manage and control development work.
  • Scrum is a wrapper for existing engineering practices.
  • Scrum is a team-based approach to iteratively, incrementally develop systems and products when requirements are rapidly changing
  • Scrum is a process that controls the chaos of conflicting interests and needs.
  • Scrum is a way to improve communications and maximize co-operation.
  • Scrum is a way to detect and cause the removal of anything that gets in the way of developing and delivering products.
  • Scrum is a way to maximize productivity.
  • Scrum is scalable from single projects to entire organizations. Scrum has controlled and organized development and implementation for multiple interrelated products and projects with over a thousand developers and implementers.
  • Scrum is a way for everyone to feel good about their job, their contributions, and that they have done the very best they possibly could.

im posting about scrum after it got mentioned here in a discussion of it being used recently at yahoo:

This is really interesting and touches on some drive imaging issues raised in the past.

http://www.apcstart....wn-vista-install-dvd

The bottom is about to fall out of the market for imaging tools like Symantec Ghost: Windows Vista is based entirely around Microsoft’s own system imaging technology. The Vista install DVD is, in fact, just one big system image.

and:

However, all this is about to change. Windows Vista is based entirely around Microsoft’s Windows Imaging Format (or WIM), a file-based imaging standard rather than a sector-based. this means that the image isn’t a bit-for-bit image of your disk layout, and hence you can apply the image to a new system without destroying the contents of the hard drive.

and something i have been wanting for a while:

Being file-based also enables certain features which will prove seriously useful. When capturing a system to a WIM file you can specify exclusions. For example, you can have a work directory on the system with temporary data. Instead of having to clean it up every time you can simply exclude it from the capture. The same applies to session-based files like the pagefile – it will be recreated when the system boots anyway, so why waste space?

and

Single-instance files are another advancement. WIM files can store more than one image, so you can have multiple system configurations stored within the one WIM, but to avoid image bloat single instancing checks each file referenced in each image. When more than one image references the same file (for example, almost the entire contents of the C:\Windows directory), the physical file is only stored once within the WIM and every image which references it is directed to that copy.

Living Room / Avoider! Extremely Clever and Whimsical Flash Game
« Last post by mouser on July 25, 2006, 01:22 PM »
Ok, this has to be my favorite web flash "game" in the last couple of weeks.  I think the term "meta" might be appropriate.  It's really clever and whimsical.  I won't spoil it for you, but give it a try and see what you think.

And if you're like me and get annoyed by flash games where when you move the cursor outside the movie window it gets stuck and interferes with the game, here's a game that makes good use of that phenomena.

Really nicely done

What's your high score?

Living Room / Re: phonespelling.com - what does your phone number spell
« Last post by mouser on July 25, 2006, 01:10 PM »
the first question youd have to ask is, is the person just pushing the button with the letter they are thinking of, OR are they using a scheme to specifically indicate which of the 3 letters on each button they are refering to.

if the latter, then a simple algorithm could convert it.

if the former, it's MUCH more interesting.  if you know the language it should be feasible to decode it fairly well probabilistically, by estimating the probability of each letter based on surrounding context.  i wonder if such a util exists yet.. it's a great crypto/probability challenge.

Living Room / Mathematical Imagery Gallery
« Last post by mouser on July 25, 2006, 01:04 PM »

The connection between mathematics and art goes back thousands of years. Mathematics has been used in the design of Gothic cathedrals, Rose windows, oriental rugs, mosaics and tilings. Geometric forms were fundamental to the cubists and many abstract expressionists, and award-winning sculptors have used topology as the basis for their pieces. Dutch artist M.C. Escher represented infinity, Möbius bands, tessellations, deformations, reflections, Platonic solids, spirals, symmetry, and the hyperbolic plane in his works.
Mathematicians and artists continue to create stunning works in all media and to explore the visualization of mathematics--origami, computer-generated landscapes, tesselations, fractals, anamorphic art, and more.

To get on this list, a bug has to be able to cause at least half a day of futile head scratching, and has to be aggravated by the poor design of the "C" language.  In the interests of equal time, and to see how the world has progressed in the 20-odd years since "C" escaped from its spawning ground, see my Top 10 Ways to be Screwed by the Java programming language, and for more general ways to wase a lot of time due to bad software, try my Adventures in Hell page.
1. Non-terminated comment, "accidentally" terminated by some subsequent comment, with the code in between swallowed.

www.publishing2.com continues to be one of the more consistently useful sites to read about web developments.
this is a nice article that is relevant to dc stuff, and i hope this is an issue that will continue to get attention.  surely sites built on the content created with others should not be getting rich off this content while the creators get nothing.  surely the solution is that much (most) of the profits should go to the community of content creators..

I’ve been following an interesting trend of power grabs by Web 2.0 companies, from MySpace to YouTube to Google — Web 2.0 is supposed to be all about the “user,” but when it comes to profit making the user is getting shut out:
